POP Talks: Cooking Beats with High Klassified

Rough Trade Records is a legendary independent record label and a benchmark and inspiration to many in the field. Rough Trade was at the epicentre of the punk explosion right at the start and since then has gone on to release a catalogue that almost defines the genre of independent music itself. Jes Skolnik is a writer, editor, and musician who splits their time between Chicago and New York. 

TiKA is an artist DJ, cultural producer, TV/Online personality, activist and advocate for the empowerment of female artists and creators.

Natasha Parish is a Chicago-based booking agent at Flowerbooking, working with artists including Black Marble, Boy Harsher, Tamaryn, and many more. 

Ryhna Thompson is the Founder and President of Envision Management + Production, an artist management and creative production company celebrating 15 years of working with internationally renown, boundary-breaking artists including Kid Koala, FOXTROTT and Bell Orchestre.

Bob Sleppy has been the Executive Director of Nuçi’s Space (www.nuci.org), a health and resource center for musicians in Athens, GA, since 1999.

Ari Swan, Laurie Torres and Stella Adjokê present "Who I Am":  a commissioned piece made remotely exploring black identity making through music. It was presented at Le Funhouse de POP Montreal in June, 2020 and was followed by a conversation led by multi-instrumentalist and music educator, Julie Richard, where the artists discussed the trials of collaborating remotely as well as techniques and strategies for expressing their differing experiences as Black women and NB folk.

Surviving the Post-Performance High / Survivre au « high » d’après-performance 

What happens once the lights are off, and the crowd is gone? The art of performing is a skill that may take an artist years to develop, an important facet being the ability to manage the flood of emotions that may arise. A cheering audience can give an artist a natural high after a show—how does one deal with the inevitable comedown? What tools are there for those that are sensitive to this performance high?

Que se passe-t-il lorsque les lumières s’éteignent et que la foule se dissipe? L’art de la performance est une aptitude que certain·e·s artistes mettent des années à développer et dont l’une des facettes importantes est la capacité de gérer le barrage d’émotions qui pourrait faire surface. Un public enthousiaste peut donner à un artiste un high naturel après un spectacle – comment peut-on gérer l’inévitable descente? Quels outils existe-t-il pour ceux qui sont sensibles à ce high performatif?

Using Sarah Hennies’ groundbreaking experimental video Contralto (http://www.sarah-hennies.com/contralto) as a starting point, this panel will explore the particularities of the trans-feminine voice and what artists can learn from trans women’s journeys to be heard as they are. By exploring the struggles that trans women face, and the ways in which these challenges are amplified by performance, this event will explore questions of vocal presentation, change, and development over time.

This panel was recorded at the 2019 edition of POP Symposium, and features New York composer Sarah Hennies and Montreal’s artists Elle Barbara and Fae Sirois.

This episode is a recording of the panel on “Music and Deafhood” featuring Matthew Maxey, founder of DEAFinitely Dope, artist and researcher, Véronique Leduc and Gaitrie Persaud; artist and advocate for American Sign Language Interpretation at concerts.

How can we make music shows, and music in general accessible for deaf and deafened people, and those with hearing impairments? Slowly but surely, the hearing world is finally opening its stages to deaf audiences. Social media has been a driving force for interpreters, providing them with a platform to translate songs to sign languages for deaf people. This has allowed music to be enjoyed by wider audiences, and has expanded the ways artists experience music and musicality.
