There must be something in the water. Or the air. Have you noticed an uptick of interest in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle lately?  

We spoke with Mark Jones of the podcast Doings of Doyle last season. Since then, a new society has met, another has been formed, and an academic journal has begun its path.  

To help us understand the impetus behind this movement, we invited three well-informed and energetic individuals who are responsible for some of it: Ross Davies, BSI ("The Temple"), Cliff Goldfarb ("Fordham the Horsham Lawyer"), and Ashley Polasek, BSI ("Singlestick"). 

Each of them plays a unique but essential role in the development of these public-facing entities, and they each help us understand how it all fits together.

All Things ACD

With Victorian and Gothic influence in a number of the Sherlock Holmes stories, the Canon can be great fodder for the mysterious, occult and spooky elements of Halloween. Certainly The Hound of the Baskervilles, "The Adventure of the Devil's Foot," "The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier," or "The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place" have elements that can make a reader's hair stand on end.

But the most direct link with Halloween as we know it today (other than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Lot No. 249" - the original mummy story) has to be "The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire." Sherlock Holmes himself was a bit dismissive of the supernatural in this case, saying "Rubbish, Watson, rubbish! What have we to do with walking corpses who can only be held in their grave by stakes driven through their hearts? It's pure lunacy."

But our guest on this episode, Les Klinger (a guest on Episodes 31 and 32, when he spoke about the Guy Ritchie / Robert Downey, Jr. movies and his role as Warner Brothers' consultant on the set) is no stranger to Dracula. He has written The New Annotated Dracula and has been an influential in the Dracularian movement. As we discuss the intersection of Holmes and Dracula, Les helps us understand the evolution of vampire literature and Dracula-influenced media.

In the discussion, Les alludes to other influential fictional works in the movement such as I Am Legend, In the Shadow of Dracula, and Anno Dracula by Kim Newman, who is the Distinguished Speaker at the 2013 Baker Street Irregulars Weekend. In addition to the popular work, Les noted that there is a scholarly vein of work (pardon the pun) in the field that brings more seriousness to the practice, albeit less fluid and constant than Sherlockian scholarship. But we kept coming back to the intersections of Holmes and Dracula, in all forms: written, film and stage, and how each have their cycles of popularity that are typically driven by a single piece of work each time.

Holmes and the occult is our subject for this Halloween episode of I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere, and we're joined by editor and author Charles Prepolec, who together with J.R. Campbell edited Gaslight Grimoire: Fantastic Tales of Sherlock Holmes, Gaslight Grotesque: Nightmare Tales of Sherlock Holmes, and Gaslight Arcanum: Uncanny Tales of Sherlock Holmes, joins us to talk about the intersection of Sherlock Holmes and the spooky, outre and creepy, setting the tone for the season.  Charles (who goes by @sherlockeditor on Twitter), had the great fortune to work with the likes of Barbara Hambly, Martin Powell and Kim Newman, among others, and he talks about the selection process for including authors and their works in the anthologies.

Of course, Conan Doyle was no stranger to writing ghost and horror stories, and his Professor Challenger series dealt with such fantastical subjects as dinosaurs. We take Charles on a tangent and begin discussing the ideal Hollywood actor to portray the professor.

Charles has contributed to Sherlock Magazine, Scarlet Street and Canadian Holmes and is a longtime Sherlockian, having been a member of the Singular Society of the Baker Street Dozen in Calgary for 20 years and a Master Bootmaker of the Bootmakers of Toronto in 2006. He spends his days at the Movie Poster Shop in Calgary and reading voraciously.

Sherlock Holmes - Night Before Xmas

Tom Conway as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as his confidant and partner in crime investigation... Dr. Watson.  This series ran in 1946 for only 39 episodes as American audiences had tired of nearly 20 years of Sherlock Holmes stories, films, and over 200 episodes on radio starring Basil Rathbone as Holmes.  He basically tired of being typecast as Holmes and left the series.  Tom Conway sounded very much like Rathbone and hence got the job.  "Black Angus" from Oct. 19. 1946.

The Supernatural

On Feb. 6, 2010 a group of local volunteer actors including: Jason Daniel Roberts, James C. Darling, Diane Ficarra, Jean Proulx, and Bruce Allen came together to re-create the Sherlock Holmes radio show entitled, "The Adventure of the Tolling Bell"  The program was directed and edited by John Lovering and was recorded in a home studio to be later broadcast on his Audio Theatre program that aired on Portsmouth Community Radio for 13 years from 2004-16.

Adding another episode of The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes to Heirloom Radio.  Tom Conway replaced Basil Rathbone as Holmes, but Nigel Bruce remained in this new series as Dr. Watson.  Interestingly enough, Tom Conway sounded very much like Rathbone.  Rathbone quit the series as he had done so many movies and radio shows as Sherlock, he simply tired of doing the character.  The stories are still interesting today... so see if you can solve the crime before Holmes and Watson do! Such is the motivating factor behind&nbsp;Doyle's Rotary Coffin, a concept of Paul Thomas Miller. Paul joined us to discuss his quest to acknowledge that anyone's Holmes has something to offer. And to preview his upcoming project: a chronology of the Sherlock Holmes stories titled&nbsp;Watson Does Not Lie&nbsp;(available soon from Wildside Press). Paul set out to create a chronology that didn't rely on excuses like Watson's poor handwriting, a slip of the memory, or outright fabrications. And he's created quite a convincing argument. Watson Does Not Lie / Doyle's Rotary Coffin

"It is always awkward doing business with an alias." [BLUE] &nbsp; Back in Episode 96, we chatted about the many disguises and other identities of Sherlock Holmes. But what about other people in the Canon who played dress-up? Whether they were trying to dupe one of his clients or Sherlock Holmes himself, these individuals each had good reasons to be incognito. It's just a trifle. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Aliases and Disguises

The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was an old-time radio show which aired in the USA from October 2, 1939 to July 7, 1947. The show first aired on the Blue Network but later moved to the Mutual Broadcasting System. The radio stories were action packed, filled with atmosphere, and featured great music by Lou Kosloff, as well as excellent sound effects. Originally, the show starred Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. Together, they starred in 220 episodes which aired weekly on Mondays from 8:30 to 9:00pm. Commercialism seeped into the radio show from the start, as Watson himself, played by various actors, took on the co-host role with a spokesman for G. Washington Tea as a visitor ready to hear a Holmes story. Before a blazing fire with tea always at the brew, Watson reminiscences the great tales between comments on how good the tea is! Bromo Quinine sponsored some of the earlier programs on the NBC Blue Network and for a period Parker Pen was the sponsor. Basil Rathbone's last episode as the famous detective was "The Singular Affair of the Baconian Cipher." He was eager to separate himself from the cast type of Holmes, and even though the show's sponsor Petri Wine offered him generous pay to continue, he decided to move on. Once he did, the sponsor did as well, and Tom Conway took the starring role, though Nigel Bruce got top billing and was always announced first. The new sponsor was Kreml Hair Tonic for Men, and the new series only lasted 39 episodes.
