Me and my dad playing twinkle little star on the swedish folkinstsrument, "Psalmodikon". He played the melody and I played the drone (offcourse). It was great fun and I recorded it all and "produced" it slightly in the computer.

Sort of the sound of the late summer evenings on the countryside where I grew up, in a (very) small place called Kaararp in the south west of Sweden.

Its midsummer in sweden. Its green and lush and mostly raining, but now and again the sun shines, the soft winds are fresh and brings the smell of grass and flowers, and the sound of birds and insects through the trees surround you... I mean, can it get any better?

Based on a field recording from the cathedral of the town of Lund, Sweden... I had a day off and went to Lund to make som photographs and eat at my favourite indian resturant. In the Cathedral there was this sermon going on so i sat down in the left isle and waited for it to end so that I could go on photographing without disturbing someone who had come for religious reasons... I couldn't help my self from recording parts of the sermon and the psalms since the sound, the reverbation between the thick stone walls, was very special. Anyway, this tune is the result of that recording. By the way, I asked a priest I knew a long time ago if it would be incorrect of me to use the recording of the priests sermon like this, just to not step on any toes, but I never got a reply. Maybe that was a "no", I dont know...

Personent Hodie, a medieval choral that is still popular today as a christmas carole. My dear parents plays the scandinavian string instument psalmodikon and I sampled them playing the first verse. I stretched the sample 8 times, split it up in five different layers and added a synth drone, and... almost instant ambient drone version of the ancient choral Personent Hodie.

Drone, ambient and experimental soundscapes.

The basic idea behind Port Manteau comes from my teens. I grew up in the countryside and the summer evenings had this balsamic quality of sound. Floating in through my open window were all the sounds of the nature around me – The slow gurgling from the stream nearby, foxes and roe deer  calling, and the occasional elk trampling around in the garden eating mums apples from the tree., and far away, filtered by the distance, the rhythmic thumping of the train passing through the village… 

When I started making music I made a lot of minimalist teckno on the 8-track Octamed program for Amiga and from there, inspired by everything from Lucky People Center and  Transglobal underground to Samla Mammas Manna, I landed somehow in some kind of transglobal electronica influensed by brittish dubstep and crossover acts like Talvin Singh, Celt Islam, Swedish folk/rock/electronica act Hedningarna, Nåid, and lots of other similar genrebending acts.

Paralell to that I found in the local record store – quite surprisingly though, it was a small town with rather small minded people – ambient stuff, like Jam & Spoons Triptomatic Fairytales, Foundlands wonderful, “Everybodys neighbour” and Nåids debut album(all that stuff is on spotify, check it out). Somehow, and rather late in my explorations, I bumped into this really deep german guy, Robert Henke (one of the inventors of the Ableton DAW). He had sampled the many sounds from the Buddha maschine and processed them into one long drone, called Layering Buddha. It was a difficult piece of musik, but it somehow appealed to me, and for a period of time I didn’t listen to anything else. The tricky part of drone music is to penetrate the initial feeling that theres isn’t much going on, no verse/chorus, no chord progression, nothing. But eventually you start to hear, and feel, the nuances, the subtle shifts in harmonics, different layers of tone clusters, textures and colours and the interplay between the actual sound and the various impressions that youre brain culls up in response to the input of sound and what it associates with it.

Port Monteau is greatly inspired by these early experienses of sound, from those summer evenings now long gone, the unexpected finds in the local record store and everything that made an impression on me until today, where I live in one of the largest cities in Sweden, 20 years has passed since then and I have grown, layer by layer… The music I make under the name Port Monteau is a reflection of all that.
