A performer [three performers] faces a seated [standing] audience. Behind [before] the performer[s], covering the entire back wall (which is facing or parallel to the frontal view of the seated audience members) is [are] a [six] mirror[s].

PROCEDURE:
STAGE 1: The [first] performer[s] faces [away] the audience. [S]He begins continuously describing him[her]self--his [her] external features [thought and actions]--although looking [away from] in the direction of the audience. [S]He does this for [the duration that she is cutting hair] about 5 minutes.
STAGE 2: The [second] performer continues to face [away from] the audience [seated while having hair cut]. [S]He observes [the audience in the mirror] and then phenomenologically describes the audience's external appearance for [the duration that her hair is cut] about 5 minutes.
STAGE 3: The performer faces the [performer having her hair cut] mirror (his [her] back turned to the audience) [most often seated]. [S]He continuously describes [her actions and external features] him[her]self (as in STAGE 1).
STAGE 4: The performer faces the mirror. [S]He observes and describes the audience (as in STAGE 3). [When they feel it is time to rotate, they do so, alternating every 5-10 minutes until the haircutting is complete and everyone has left.]

slow sayonara

sound walk created during the rePLACE Beirut workshop

Made during the course of the rePLACE workshop in Beirut, this audio recording is the trace of a sound walk providing aural instructions for following a daily route shared by Maral Der Boghossian, who has visited her father's shop in Bourj Hammoud two to three times a week for over 25 years.

At one point during one of our discussions, Jad mentioned something about the need to build systems and structures so that we can break free from them. At the time i did not agree so much, perhaps out of mere exhaustion (the dialectic), and maybe also there has just always been some part of me that desires to find out how far we can just let things go, or to understand the limits of tolerance.

Phasing works in a similar way, though taking a walk in the city makes a clean set of variables into a dirty game. The phase is an easy, fun experiment; it breaks out of itself predictably but still fascinating to listen to — self-contained by reception. But it seems difficult to consider any form of reality anymore in terms of such structure; what is always lies next to and around itself, everything is multiple. Perhaps it's simply a poor understanding of mathematics, but I never know how to discern exponentiality from noise. Circling now (the dialectic), it's another form of fascination — like listening to sound upon sound. Or maybe it's simply the idea of being attentive to the things that have always been there.

Eight participants followed the audio to reach the Der Boghossian store, and eight failed to reach the destination, but each person's voice is layered onto the route as a phased, audio palimpsest. Each more complex than the last, it is enough noise to bare the gaps in the structure of the game. But it's also just letting things follow their natural course.

In this instance, we are virtually strangers to one another, somehow cast into another configuration, unsure of our roles as either marginal tools of a herd or fair players of a game known as “44 Theatre” (44劇場). This game has been organised by the collective 實踐論 On Practice, and in December 2016, we participated in a series of strategically planned public readings and dialogues along routes and amidst non-places of Guangzhou. The assigned text was a two-part fictionalised account of the late 19th-early 20th century warlord Baron Roman von UNGERN-STERNBERG written by writer 王煒 WANG Wei. Our doubt and illiteracy led to sidelined conversations and this piece.

This inadvertent collaboration began with a conversation about the worlds around us — and our own motions within it — leading to feelings of futility, sometimes maybe the inability to do anything at all. He was fiddling around with a guitar at the time because he couldn't make work; I wrote something down because i was still in shock and didn't know how to help. I was thinking of him and thinking of her, and then decided one night when Anh was asleep in the other room to record it for them, sitting in darkness in a hallway with metal walls. She couldn't understand the English and he offered to translate it for her, he stumbled and listened to it over and over again, then he wrote something down, too, thinking of a different her. She put us together, just before her baby was born, and that became the introduction of the piece. I cried the first time i saw it.

radioHED: Dissensus, Diaspora and Tunes [Part One, 2017-08-10]

Between December 2018 and February 2019, we held a number of conversations around the topics of work, leisure and the changing nature of industry in Hong Kong with Master WONG, a retiring letterpress craftsman who was in the process of selling his machine for good. Via the hypnotic hum of his letterpress, accompanied by the sound of idle, fellow workers engaging in a few rounds of mahjong, we happened upon the idea to stage another discussion during a mahjong game among four artists who have been involved to various degrees with publishing. The script generated from our research and these dialogues form the basis of "Getting Lighter, Still Labour-Intensive (a reading)", to be released in two chapters for 𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑚𝑒 𝑖𝑓 𝐼'𝑚 𝑤𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑔 in 2020. An edited version of the script has also been included in 《Publication Studio Portable: A Mobile Publishing Manual》, published by Publication Studio Pearl River Delta and Publication Studio Rotterdam (2019).
