Portable Minds is a brand new label founded by Krankbrother and Nofitstate affiliate Jody Barr. Having snowballed through 2015 and garnered support from a whole host of tastemakers and radio hosts including Sasha, Adam Beyer, Laurent Garnier, Maceo Plex, B Traits and George Fitzgerald it seems only logical that Jody would move on to create his own platform. Now - a year and a half on from his first record he inaugurates Portable Minds with his ‘Culture Vulture’ EP - two burly, hardware-centric jams that set the labels canon clearly from the off. 

The title track kicks things off with gritty drums thundering through capacious textures and off-kilter vocal snippets. ‘As The Wax Runs Down’ then follows up with a percolating sequence creeping under rich, spectral stabs and a full bodied kick drum. An elongated breakdown opens analogue filters out before giving way to rapturous effect wrapping up a record that sets the label’s best foot forward whilst demonstrating an artist firmly on his ascent.

Artist Bio:

London based Jody Barr is an auspicious producer, label owner and DJ who since enjoying a breakout year in 2015 has continued firmly on his ascent. Drawing influence from the likes of Boddika, Danny Daze, Alex Smoke and Scuba - he has swiftly garnered widespread support through his standout releases on Krankbrother and a series of shows including Fabric’s infamous room 1, Studio 338, Space Ibiza, Ministry Of Sound, Bunker Derry.

Demonstrating astute studio skills beyond his years and sporting a serious arsenal of hardware, Barr specialises in his own strain of ‘Technofied House Music’ - burly, rattling dance floor tracks that have seen airplay across a multitude of Radio 1 shows via George Fitzgerald and B.Traits. With a blooming catalogue under his belt, attention has most recently turned to the inauguration of his own imprint ‘Portable Minds’ - a trend-dodging project which he intends to use both for his own productions and as a platform for fellow creative producers who share his artistic outlook.

PM001 - Mixed by Jody Barr

London producer Jody Barr readies the second release on his fledgling imprint Portable Minds after a successful inauguration that garnered support from Eats Everything, Laurent Garnier and Skream. In for 002 is an uncompromising 3-track EP including 2 tracks from the label owner himself and a stellar remix from Phantasy affiliate Kamera.

The ‘Turbo Jangle’ EP is cold and heavy paring that melds his seismic kicks with rasping analogue synths. Galvanised drums and carefully managed reverb see Barr’s sights set to big-room spaces whilst a subtle suffusion of dub maintains a sense of class. Next up, Kamera - an artist recently collared by Erol Alkan’s label and one who matches the ethos of Portable Minds perfectly - provides his take on the title track.

Hissing textures and tearing hi hats sit atop bit-crushed melodies and menacing sweeps in a revision that manages to maintain a sense of fervid tension without ever quite boiling over. Together all three sit as a serious coup for a label in such early development and provide an exciting insight into what’s in store from Portable Minds.

'London producer Jody Barr continues to bolster his own Portable Minds imprint adding to 4 self-released titles with another pair of searing, big-room Techno jams. Although still in relatively early stages of development - Portable Minds has swiftly become a reliable source for DJs for it's no-nonsense output and this 5th release is no different. 

'CCVT' kicks things off as Barr aligns his arsenal of hardware and layers chunky, analogue drums with fizzing textures and a bold, menacing synth line. 'Jellyfish' then follows up with more concrete drums that are set marching alongside a metallic riff that's stretched and filtered out across an elongated breakdown.'

Portable Minds strides into 2018 with a grip of assured hybrid techno workouts that further highlight Jody Barr’s distinctive take on contemporary club dynamics. Drawing on the blueprint of Detroit and matching it with a rowdy low-end soundsystem swagger, Barr conjures up the kind of malevolent tracks that would make a pool party feel like a sweaty, strobe-lit basement. 

“Donny’s Arcade” strips things down to an essential core, using the space in the mix to create an intense atmosphere for the lean drums and distorted vocal incantations to punch through. There’s subtlety hanging from the bare bones of this minimalist bruiser though, with threads of hyphy synth squiggles lurking in the middle distance to inject just the right amount of light into the proceedings. 

“PSE (Post Soviet Escort)” takes things in a more outwardly nervy direction, pinging a relentless bleep hook around the mix with the same militancy you’d expect from golden era Robert Hood before firing off a snarling electro bassline. Exercising tension and release with the patience of a seasoned pro, Barr delivers the consummate cannon fodder for peak time freakouts.  

It’s another step forward for Portable Minds and Jody Barr, exploring the depths of hardware-powered techno production with a nod to the deepest layers of underground UK club music.

PORTABLE MINDS

Headed up by ascending artist Jody Barr, Portable Minds is an independent imprint that aims to operate outside of the constraints of close-mindedness. The intention set by Barr is for the platform to allow both himself and his peers to express themselves freely without having to compromise their productions and the output will predominantly take the shape of single-artist EPs that showcase the more daring and unique facets of participants studio skills. 

Having been inaugurated by Barr himself with his ‘Culture Vulture’ EP - a release that caught the attention of producers such as Jamie Jones, XXXy, Laurent Garnier and Groove Armada - upcoming releases will eventually bring more into the fold. All bringing with them the same degree balance of intrigue and power, EPs will be largely focused towards the dance floor although the experimental streak running through the project will no doubt result in some records falling left-of-centre.
