Port Of Call

Kostas Soublis’ productions under the Fluxion moniker helped define legendary Berlin imprint Chain Reaction, and with 1999’s Vibrant Forms, the Greek producer released a milestone in the dub techno genre. Hazy and distant, there was still more than enough dancefloor push to propel Soublis into the (very short) list of genre legends, and make Vibrant Forms one of the very rare techno albums that works from beginning to end.

Out of press for far too long, this new edition of Vibrant Forms has been remastered and will finally see the entire album released on vinyl for the first time. The most shocking thing hearing it almost fifteen years after its original release however is how little it has dated. Soublis wisely avoided any cultural tropes, and the productions still sound fresh and deceptively alien. Through washes and waves of reverb and the faint thud of a kick drum the all-analogue productions contain a raw quality that is all too rare these days.

Just head to the album’s elegiac closing number ‘Opaque’. Upbeat and propulsive the track still maintains a deceptive calm, buoyed by swirling synthesizer washes and sizzling, tape saturate percussion. This is the way dub techno should sound – don’t accept any imitations, Vibrant Forms is the real thing.

The mysterious tracks led to the place where all the exoplanetary bohemians gathered. The signs, shimmering with multicolored diodes, rattled in unison with the rhythm of the dancefloor. The vibration seeped out from behind the doors and was noticeably felt in the chest area. The entrance to the club was securely guarded.

– Do you see this huge caterpillar? As soon as he turns away, I'll give the signal. Stay tuned.
– Yeah, they only serve in special detachments. On Alien-TV, they said that their hearing was not very good — Cat was in slight confusion and tried to calm himself with reasoning.
– We are waiting, a little more… Go ahead!

The surprise effect failed immediately after the astonished face of security appeared in the sights. Everyone froze, looking at each other in confusion.

– Hey, where are you going?
– Melvin...?! My friend, I can't believe my eyes!!! Who would have thought...
– You know. After leaving the Aerospace Corporation, I'm wary of harassment. And you, I see, obviously have not come to dance.
– Hats off, you're a master of conspiracy, but... We have almost fried you!

Melvin remained silent for a long time. The moment has come to reveal a lot of unexpected details.

It was great to do this for Martyn as we go way back, when he booked me to play for him in Leeds in the  mid 2000's.

Nachtiville releases a record for its upcoming inaugural edition, fittingly entitled "Lekker Various". Following the tradition of its elder sister Nachtdigital, the record is a Various Artists EP, combining diverse contributions by artists who will also play the festival for an exclusive vinyl release. The music is an all-Dutch affair with tracks by ROD, Mattheis, Dollkraut and JP Enfant. Artwork comes courtesy of Manuel Birnbacher, Nachtiville’s graphic designer. The record comes as a 12inch with a proper hardcover, it is strictly limited and will definitely never see a repress. It is available first at the festival (Nov 13-15 at bungalow park De Eemhof). Possible remaining copies will afterwards be sold through the Nachtdigital web shop and a handful of carefully selected record stores (tba).
