The 5th act of Kuboraum’s Digital Sound Residency presents <3less by Space Afrika, a delicately collaged soundscape spanning time, consciousness and genre.

The duo composed by producers Joshua Inyang and Joshua Tarelle made its name with dub techno-soaked sonic impressions of the grey streets and distinct voices of their hometown, Manchester.  As sonic painters, they portray visual stories in the listeners’ minds: rich emotional landscapes translated into contemplative, weightless sound collages. Oblique mosaics of dialogue, rhythm, texture, and shadow leaning into an enigmatic fusion of smoky dub, alchemize ambient and cosmic downtempo. Genre-spanning emotive electronic music rooted in everyday life and real-world experiences, allowing the listener to empathize and see the world through the artist’s eyes, just as they see it. 

Space Afrika started their career with minimal and dub techno productions. Their first albums Above The Concrete/BelowThe Concrete (2014) and  Somewhere Decent To Live (2018) were sparse yet intimate, paying tribute to the landscape of their home city, but also expressing a desire to escape its sometimes depressing disintegration. In 2020, they released the mixtape hybtwibt?, a powerful exploration of black consciousness through an assemblage of conversations, news reportage, r&b samples and ambience. Their third album "Honest Labour", featured as best album of 2021 in Pitchfork, Guardian and The Wire Magazine to name a few, is a 19-track collection of crepuscular moods and beautifully liquid washes of sound. A delicately created vulnerable sonic tapestry, almost entirely organic yet with a binding hint to something more cosmic in the air.

SPACE AFRIKA  <3less

London’s abundant waterways and parks provide an oneiric muse for Cucina Povera and Ben Vince’s resounding debut full-length collaboration, an engrossing suite of weightless sax, synth and disklavier-bedded, noirish nocturnes that land somewhere between Grouper and Terry Riley. 

Centred around Maria Rossi aka Cucina Povera’s muzzy vocal loops and the faintest melodic motifs, London-based composer and multi-instrumentalist Ben Vince accompanies on saxophone, synth and piano, shrouding Rossi's vocals in swirls of dimly lit psychedelic smoke. As a newcomer to London, Rossi was "caught up in a sort of wondrous overwhelm” - a feeling that seeps through every movement of the almost hour long album. Working mostly at the Roundhouse, the pair find a musical confluence between Rossi's words - "fluid, dreamy, hazy ideations" - and Vince's shadowy renditions.

Vince's plasmic echoes and Rossi's aerial delivery form a poetic union, twisting and painting each sound in pearlescent shades. Rossi's folk roots shine through like cracks of dawn sunlight on 'Sumu Puistossa' ("fog in the park"), reverberating over organ and dream-zone sax; her words tip into muted surrealism thanks to the controlled chaos of Vince's bleak treatments. His grasp of jazz is transfixing: bending sax motifs like ghostly memories of music from another timeline, smudging them into the soundfield. It’s most effective on 'Siellä Näen Kaiken' ("there I see everything"), where sickly, dissonant notes flicker like an almost-extinguished candle alongside motorised furniture music courtesy of a Disklavier.

Born out of wonder, daydreaming innocence and creative discovery, 'There I See Everything ‘ is the sound of two exploratory collaborators swimming into each other's ideas. From the Terry Riley-esque transcendence of '∞' to the sacred incantation of long-form closer 'Pikku Muurahaiskeko' ("little anthill"), the pair expose a new layer of creativity with each turn, gradually zooming out from discreet, vulnerable beauty to encompass a gently orchestrated chaos of sustained, sublime tension.

In September 2002 Mika Vainio, Ryoji Ikeda and Alva Noto (Carsten Nicolai) were invited by the Baltic Centre For Contemporary Art for a residency. As a result of this project three live performances followed this research period.

All the tracks on this record were recorded live on September 23, 2002 at the Baltic Centre For Contemporary Art in Newcastle, UK.

Posh Isolation is proud to present ”Galerie” by the Copenhagen based Scotsman Perko. While being mostly recognized for his organic blend of club music arrangements, “Galerie” emphasises a focus on field recordings, textures and striped-down abstraction. Over the course of 8 tracks Perko builds small worlds of tangible ambience and horizons of amiable beauty. The sense of ebb and flow throughout “Galerie” gives it a sense of contemplative weightlessness and the perception of mild sun glittering blindness.
