There was a time when a person would pick up an instrument to compose yet another song for a loved one. A sad figure humming into a microphone, pronouncing the most basic words and forms to convey quantity, quality, fact, statistics and similar sounds describing pain, loss and sorrow. The human brain would perceive the melody sad and perhaps within herself feel a sense of melancholia.

In another parallel world a new composition would then appear. But not one composed on a wooden built instrument, no, sounds made into structures and tables that would assists the listener into providing an additional context and meaning through digital synthesis and quantised harmonies. But who could really tell if these sounds were real? Or where they just sounds impersonating an idea of something?

Rhyme nor reason is as abstract in its shapes and ideas as it is concrete and elegant in its narratives. A carefully crafted wooden cabinet with an over-whelming amount of different drawers and hidden compartments. Each box storing blissful arrangement; a fluorescent stone, a paper note saying something about lunch, some collectible objects, a forgotten token or perhaps an autograph, all so very vibrant and joyful for its possessor.

Deleted files stored on rapidly rotating platters coated with magnetic material. Small, easy to loose SSD memory cards of recorded corrupt files and digital artefacts. Software engineered compositions trying to grasp the shared belief of an upcoming future, vivid and uncertain; birds, waters and long lost recollections. A release unconcerned with the literal depiction of things from the visible world. At least not for now.

A pungent ooze emanates from the subway. As a sticky drum machine sequence rolls out like thick dark fog, ice cold synth swirls rise from the depths.

Since the debut album Europe By Night, one of the main references associated with Henrik Stelzer and his Metro Riders project has been that of cinema, and particularly the European genre films of the 1980s. With its seedy subject matters manifesting both in visual style and music, the vibe of that era has crystallized over time. Passed down to us from deteriorating video cassettes, it became an invaluable key to decoding our present day reality.

And this is true for this album as well; Stelzer does not hide the fact that he builds heavily on that vibe; referencing it through track titles and utilizing a particular recording setup consisting of a Fostex and a reel to reel in order to achieve and recreate the feeling of those soundtracks — as heard on magnetic tape rather than vinyl.

The motion picture soundtrack as an arbitrary genre definition becomes, in the hands of Stelzer, a pair of X-ray specs for him to envision a kind of music that deals in grains and contrasts rather than hooks and choruses. And like Roddy Piper in John Carpenter’s 1988 film They Live, he hands those glasses over for us to see the true face of our times.

On Lost In Reality Metro Riders maps out an emotional geography of the cities at night, wherein the cinematic haze becomes a tool by which we can view them with new eyes. Not steering away from the darker alleys nor the harsh realities of modern day politics masquerading as progress. Yet escapism, in the end, seems the only viable option. But not as an endgame, but rather a stepping stone for building a new vocabulary for an utopian language.

The duo behind the name Tillmanns is a quiet yet persistent presence at the fringe of the Gothenburg pop scene. Unconcerned with both the poseur appeal of being in a pop group and the market standard of keeping up with new releases, they seem content with popping up now and then to reveal a tiny new masterpiece. Like this for instance, a perfect summer anthem to escape into. Like a dash of saltwater and a hot breeze in the face of hardship. And it seems justifiable in these times to cast a longing look toward simpler and more positive visions of nature and love, preferably with hooks borrowed from the realm of New Order and The Cure.

The track in question happens to share its title with a German new age track from 1982 that somehow ended up a DJ favourite of the Italian cosmic scene as well as part of the balearic canon of Ibiza. Coincidence or not, this short leap from the dancefloor to the beach is an attitude that prevails on this single release: a kind of open door policy with its roots in the convergence of pop and dance music of the mid 80’s. An attitude that is also shared with the two remixers chosen for this release, two fellow Gothenburg locals with equal footing in club as well as pop music.

Dan Lissvik should need no introduction, either as solo artist or remix mastermind. Usually you can expect him to transform any kind of track into a balearic jaw drop, often adding his own distinct guitar and percussion palette. Here, however, he doesn’t need to mold the original too hard, just subtly softening the edges to submerge the whole track in a haze of grooviness.

Mythologen on the other hand steers the track into a whole different direction; slowing things down with a heavy thumping beat dragging along like an anchor on a seabed of psychedelic sludge, getting caught in phaser filters along the way. The guitars at the centre of the original have here caught a backwards wind and sails along like a mournful farewell.
