From the suburban fringes of Frankston to far and wide, it’s hard to understate the lasting legacy of childhood friends Corey Kikos and Maryos Syawish, Sleep D on the contemporary music landscape.

Having reached near-mythic status, the trusted pundits’ indelible impact is inseparable from Butter Sessions, the blog-turned-label they founded online in 2011 and later with the release of Sleep D’s iconic The Jackal EP. What began as an online platform quickly evolved into a bedrock institution within Melbourne’s house and techno scene. Now 15 years on and 40+ releases deep, Butter Sessions stands as one of the most important cultural pillars of Australian dance music - sustained through their focus on relationship-based curation and long-term artist development. While often local in focus, its reach has always been global, championing artists they believe in and connecting them with audiences far beyond the southern hemisphere.

Beyond releases, Butter Sessions built its iconic identity via its hard to miss aesthetics and events. Sweat-soaked beginnings in the Mercat Basement acted as an incubator (sauna) to the launch of their events series. In 2014 they launched their legacy residency ‘Mania’ at Lounge where the duo forged a close-knit family of DJs and live acts. As the parties evolved, a distinct “band-but-club” ethos emerged, placing live performance at the centre of the dancefloor experience.

This live philosophy is also the hallmark of the Sleep D sound. Their hardware-driven performances are defined by a full sound and euphoric intensity, where prismatic trance, house, and techno converge into the one of a kind experiences we’ve been lucky enough to encounter at revered festivals and through original live scores for Pan’s Labyrinth and Eraserhead. As their studio shifted from inner-city Carlton to greener pastures in recent times, their sound followed - shimmering with newfound warmth and the stelliferous sense of the outdoors.

Committed to building within their home scene rather than relocating overseas, Sleep D have gone from strength to strength over their 15-year journey, a milestone well worth celebrating on Passing Notes

An undeniably fresh and intriguing listen that feels true to their Circuit Central dancefloors, lovingly run in collaboration with ONOMIX alumni and favourite Brie. These amazing parties have been blessing our beloved Boorloo over the last couple of years, and show no sign of slowin' down.
