Composer Morton Subotnick revisits the early days of the San Francisco Tape Music Center, sharing candid stories about the freewheeling, first phase of this influential hub for experimental music and culture that he co-founded with Ramon Sender in 1962. Although relatively short lived, the SFTMC had an oversized impact on the burgeoning fields of electronic music and interdisciplinary arts happenings. The collective, which grew to include visionary composer Pauline Oliveros, filmmaker Tony Martin, and electronics technician William Maginnis hosted the first public performance of Terry Riley’s seminal In C, premiered Steve Reich’s legendary early tape compositions, and developed the world’s first analog synthesizer in the form of the Buchla 100 series Modular Electronic Music System.

If I Miss A Star / The Therapist / Under The Tree - Live at Turner Sims

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Motown, the iconic record label launched in 1959 in Detroit, Michigan by Berry Gordy Jr., Carhartt WIP will release a thirteen-piece capsule collection in the coming weeks. The collaboration honors a label that reshaped the sound of American pop music, diversifying its airwaves in the process. 

To mark the collection launch, we reached out to Detroit native Kenny Dixon Jr. aka Moodymann and asked him to prepare a strictly Motown music Carhartt WIP Radio show, that displays his personal love for the label.
 
As Moodymann is not man for hasty reactions, he delivered a detailed mix featuring rare b-sides, interviews and live recordings by Motown artists like Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Steve Wonder, Kem and Dazz Band. Asked about his very own feelings towards his mix, Kenny Dixon Jr. simply says: “No matter where I‘m standing it’s good to hear home sometimes. These songs are woven into the soundtrack of my own personal movie.”  There is nothing more to add, only: enjoy the ride!
