Lando Kal (a.k.a. Antaeus Roy), one half of Bay Area electro duo Lazer Sword, follows up his 2011 debut for Hotflush, with two cuts overflowing with the darkness of a long Berlin winter.  A major player in both San Francisco and New York’s underground club scenes, Lando's love of R&B, dark jungle, Detroit techno and classic house is front and center on these two bass heavy productions.  

The infectious Rythym Sektion comes on strong, Lando expertly weaving the vocals of the 1991 rave classic hinted at in the title with threatening drums and kinetic percussion. On the flip, Lando's dynamism is on display, as Inquisition's syncopated beats swagger along, insistent and knocking, drawing you into its multi-layered paranoid rhythms. 

Lando Kal has released on respected labels Numbers, Rush Hour, Sugarcane Recordings, Still Cold, and has remixed the likes of Sepalcure, Hovatron, Salva, Sepalcure and Doc Daneeka.  Up ahead, lookout for a single dropping on Leisure System, the notorious Berghain party collective and label.

Deadboy returns to the club with DEEMZ, a new four-track EP that navigates broken techno, melodic house and more, marking one of his heaviest records to date.

Deadboy’s 2017 debut album Earth Body saw him experiment with vocal pop for the first time, on a longing album inspired by Scott Walker, Sade and the Beach Boys, but DEEMZ sees him return to the dancefloor aesthetics of his previous club-focused releases.

Driven by a tumbling lead melody, distorted drums and a sample at times mangled beyond recognition, the EP’s title track sets pace before ‘R-Less’ and ‘Sheener’ follow - a double salvo of uncompromising rippers designed for peak-time dancefloors. As ever with Deadboy, no matter how heavy and direct things get, his knack with samples, melodies and intimate moments ensure that the tracks stick in your head long after the club.

Finally, the EP’s closing track ‘Come Back to the World’ finishes the release on a melodic note, harking back to Deadboy’s now-classic White Magick EP with angelic pads, shuffling drums and longing vocal samples.

Tom Richards – Pink Something

ygam presents a recording of Ōtone’s (@otonenoto) performance for the month of contemporary music at ACUD MACHT NEU (Berlin, Sept. 2019) - an improvisation on two metallic instruments of the 'Tetsu' series and field recordings.

The work of Ōtone (Pablo Diserens’ other moniker) is characterised by an ongoing investigation of abstract industrial soundscapes. In 2017, they started a collection/series of self-made metallic objects called 'Tetsu' that they use as compositional tools and performative instruments. On stage, Ōtone manipulates these instruments and blends them with material from their field recordings archive. Their timbers exploration plays with the listeners’ acoustic memory to create new sonic combinations and associations until another landscape emerges. In this recorded performance, Ōtone improvises on 'Tetsu I' and 'Tetsu III', elaborating slowly evolving percussive accumulations and wind-instrument-like frictions, while a drone made out of recordings of resonating metal bars gradually ascends. Subtle recordings of birds, water and sea urchins also appear throughout the performance giving an organic touch to the metallic soundscape at play.

Ōtone dedicates this performance to Eliane Radigue.

Laurin Huber is a prolific figure in the Swiss underground for experimental music and arts. He has been active as a musician and producer in a slew of projects like Wavering Hands, Frederik or legendary Swiss institution Krankenzimmer 204. Having just released his first solo release under the R.E.R. moniker on the label Edipo Re, co-founded by Huber and frequent collaborator Rolf Laureijs in 2016, he now presents his first album under his given name.

Thematically, »Juncture« is perfectly in line with Huber’s approach of thinking globally and acting locally. Highlighting the singularity of specific musical concepts while embedding them firmly in a collaborative network has been the crucial guiding principle in his work for Edipo. The four tracks on »Juncture« aim to work with »superimpositions, interactions, interferences and modes of coexistence,« as Huber explains. »I’m generally interested in thought that tries to look at the world beyond dualisms,« says the artist. »Contemporary feminist theory and philosophies of difference, the critique of dualities such as nature/nurture, body/mind, object/subject or anorganic/organic are therefore important reference points.«

On a musical level, this means working with overlaps and interfering layers, field recordings as well as synthesizers and the experienced drummer’s knack for intricate rhythms. Over the course of more than half an hour, the producer brings together dreamlike synthesizer pieces with stripped down mid-tempo techno pieces, feverish echoes of industrial music and swelling sounds that are juxtaposed with subtle rhythmic counterpoints. In a world in which dualities reign and polarisation increases both socially and culturally, »Junction« serves as an invitation to deconstruct binary thinking by affirming the coexistence of allegedly opposed elements. It does so with striking emotional ambiguity, sometimes lulling in its audience with soothing sounds and in the next challenging them with an ominous atmosphere.

With his 2018 Horo EP ‘Black Sun’, Nastika stepped out to identify himself as half of Pact Infernal. ‘Endless’ is Nastika breaking away from the ritualistic rhythmic trademark of his previous work to focus on a gnarled ambience, a resolute sonic hostility that is equal parts intoxication and alienation.

Only very few things can make cracks in this construction… and shake our belief in this static world… but the current virus going round the world (2019-2020) is one of those things able to puncture holes in our bubble… and show an alternate reality beyond the stage set…

So… welcome to the new reality… the next reality… or the more real reality as the reality perceived before… accept uncertainty… and accept fear… accept loss… accept the now... and accept this as a new standard…

A moment of recognition like this asks for contemplation… sit back… think…read… listen to music…
