One of underground rap’s most distinctive and talented voices returns as Rochester, N.Y. native Pounds delivers his latest hard-hitting effort, ‘TUNA.’ The follow-up to 2016’s stellar ‘Heavy Lies The Crown,’ this project packs some serious tough talk and hard-nosed bars into its nine tracks that center on the troubled life of a kingpin.

As you can hear through his raps, Pounds is most definitely about the life he outlines in his rhymes—to the point that it’s actually rap that got him out of trouble some years ago. After a troubled youth spent in and out of jail, he focused on his love of Hip-Hop to get his life back on track. And as he continues to make good on that goal, we’re blessed with the inventive and vivid street tales heard on ‘TUNA.’

The project is brought to life not just through Pounds’ raps, but also through the clever usage of samples from Breaking Bad (“I am the one who knocks!”) and Blow, among others. Those quotes help shape the story, but it’s Pounds who brings everything together. He’s on his epic-rap-narrative sh*t on closer “Dues,” delivers tag-team villainous raps with Conway The Machine on “Gone Tomorrow,” and spits vulnerable bully bars on “Pee Wee Kirkland.” For example: “Beat you with a bat/ You rather take the gun route/ Squeezin’ with the mac/ You take the food up out my son’s mouth.”

Those touches of humanity are what make ‘TUNA’ larger than your typical bad-guy rap project, and they’re also what continue to make Pounds such a compelling figure in the independent rap circuit. Rochester, N.Y.’s own Pounds provides a stirring, personal look into his hometown in his fittingly cinematic new video for “Francis Ford” directed by Otto The Director.

The VHS-produced track stems from the rapper’s great October release, 'Rules and Parameters,' that further demonstrated his knack for delivering lyrically vivid mafioso rap. After all, this particular sub-genre is at its finest when emcees can bring such harsh, difficult stories to life with their words. And to say Pounds does that on “Francis Ford” would be an understatement.

The New York rapper is conflicted not just on the track, but in the video as well. Otto captures this with scenes of Pounds contemplating his life as a hustler and as a father, two hats he wears proudly but, again, with severe conflict. It’s for those reasons that when he spits bars like, “The city’s on fire so I gotta vent/ Make it past twenty’s an accomplishment,” you can feel that mental struggle.

Rochester native POUNDS makes it very clear on his standout new EP, 'Borgata,' that he's cut from a similar anti-hero, mafioso-rap cloth that led to so many classic records over the years. Armed with his unique voice and meditative delivery, he draws inspiration from the artists he listened to growing up (Mobb Deep, Sean Price, Nas) and pens gritty street tales that are all his own. 

Of course, you knew that already if you’ve been following his career to date, which has included a number of notable releases over the years (including 2017’s 'Rules and Parameters'). But with 'Borgata,' POUNDS takes it to the next level as he connects with famed West Coast producer Oh No, known for his superb solo work and collaborations with Alchemist (as the duo Gangrene). Together, POUNDS and Oh No have crafted a raw and cinematic EP that’s brimming with vivid imagery over soulful loops.

And it’s all done with a strong sense of purpose, as POUNDS explains. “My projects are like movies, I like to really paint that picture,” he says, discussing why he chooses to inject his releases with film and news clips. His lyrics do that as well, and you get the feeling the Rochester native mulls over his words as they fill his pages. 

You can peer into his vivid pen game on “Last Supper,” where he spits “How the f*ck you bragging when your captain ain’t fed?”, or on instant standout “448 Grams Pt. 2,” which includes lines like “I just slip through the fingers of the task force.” These bars bring even more life and color to Borgata, which is hopefully only the beginning of POUNDS and Oh No’s work together.
