We welcome Niall Power to the HD mix series for mix #080. After his recent feature on our Asbeel EP with his brilliant track 'Tape Worm Jim', it felt the right time to ask Niall for one of his all vinyl electro assaults.

Niall Power hailing from Waterford, Ireland has been sifting through record store shelves since the late 90’s. At the beginning of the 2000’s Power set up the 'Electric Circus' club night which ran and promoted for over a decade, staying true to the underground sound that inspired him with often being credited as an renowned artists' first booking in Ireland.


The year of 2003 saw Power become a Resident DJ for Resistance sharing the stage with biggest names in dance music at the time, while becoming a national household name for the avid electronic music listener. Fastforward to the current day, Power still holds strong to all things electro and techno. Currently the host of 'The Electric Circus Show' on the pirate radio station opentempo fm, where he invites artists both past and present to guest mix on his show. 


Power has been busy in his studio as of late with his own record label 'MiniMan Records' with the label's first release dropping this December. Focusing on the warped and twisted sonic sounds that have featured in his dark and deep groove DJ sets over decades of mixing. This mix shows Power at his best, digging deep into the varied and vast record collection to lay down a fast paced, all vinyl mix, heavily influenced by the old school sounds of Detroit but also featuring mutated sounds of the past, present and future.

1. Which artists has influenced you the most?

- I've always had a huge admiration for all things Detroit and the 90’s which I grew up in and in particular the Original Trio of UR 101, Jeff Mills, Robert Hood and Mad Mike. HEROES!

2. What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

- In Jan 2022, I launched my own Label Mini Man Records, Focusing on Electro & Techno with a nod to all things Detroit, Acid, Funk & Sci-Fi.
The 1st EP, The Bends was a Sci-Fi style electro EP (Limited Number still available ) and the 2nd instalment Sea Snake drops 30th Sep which is a darker electro EP with lots of soul and funk it comes with a killer remix from Human Rebellion which is pure fire. The 3rd EP on MMR which is part of a trilogy as the music gets darker is due out 2023.. I’ve a couple of other projects bubbling under the surface and all will be revealed, you will have to stay tuned.

3. Which artists/labels are more relevant to you now?

- Artists like Human rebellion, The Exaltics, Heinrich Dressel, Scape One, Maelstrom are inspiring. While labels like, Science Cult, Rave or Die, Truss and Mechatronica keep on knocking out the goods, also shouts out to Keith Tucker aka K1 for his non-stop work and rereleasing some of his PuzzleBox back catalogue along with future classics. On the Techno front Artists like Lee Holman and Stef Mendesidis are always on top of their game.

4. What inspires you now to create music?

- Positive energy and positive vibes help me, but to be honest, I only make music when I’m in a state of flow and I make whatever flows out through me, I never force it or push it, I might wake up with an idea and I go straight into the studio and jam out my ideas.

5. If it's not a secret, what set-up do you use when creating music?

- No secret, I record everything through an old Mackie 24/8 straight into the Ableton which is my DAW of choice. My Hardware setup has been the same for a long time and I’m super happy with it.

Power

The Irish head honcho of Mini Man Records is up next, displaying his skills behind the decks with this vinyl-only interpretation of his mantra taking us through Electro, Techno and Acid with some classic tracks from the past and present. He’s been a DJ for the best part of three decades playing in clubs and festivals all over his native Ireland whilst also bringing his bags of records to clubs like Griessmuehle and Razzmatazz. Having held residences with renowned club nights Resistance, Backwards and his own Electric Circus, which is now a monthly Radio show on Pirate Radio station; OpenTempo FM which hosts an array of amazing mixes monthly.

Over the years he’s played support to artists like Jeff Mills, Juan Atkins, Robert
Hood, Dave Clarke, Luke Slater, Ben Sims to the late great Andrew Weatherall.
His music productions have been released on HillTown Disco, Psyko Social
Records, TakeOver Records and his own imprint Mini Man Records (which has gathered acclaim from many of the genre's elite including Slam, Sunil Sharp, Alienata & L.F.T.)

Power has embarked on diverse ventures, from curating, promoting club nights and performing alongside renowned DJs and Live acts to delving into production and overseeing a record label. With a repertoire spanning decades, holding down multiple residences, playing various European venues and festivals, While being the host of the 'Electric Circus' radio show, dedicated to introducing global talent to a wider audience. As a producer he has released music on Hilltown Disco, Mini Man Records, TakeOver Records, Psykosocial and has multiple EP releases dated for 2024. His recent endeavour includes the rebrand of Mini Man Records, while focused on cultivating underground Techno and Electro music.

Electric Circus was a club night which was run & promoted by Power in his home town of Waterford. In that time, it show cased local, national and international DJs & Live Acts, which eventually evolved into The Electric Circus Show, playing host to some amazing DJ & Live sets from guests like, DVS NME, Scape One, Neil Landstrumm, Transparent Sound, Dez Williams, Luke Eargoggle, ADJ, Human Rebellion and many more (including me!).

Power has shared the DJ Booth and has been the warm up Dj for legends such as Jeff Mils, Juan Atkins, Derek May, Robert Hood, Rolando, Carl Craig, Dave Clarke, Green Velvet, Luke Slater, Oscar Mulero, Speedy J, Steve Rachmad, Ben Sims, Slam, and many more.

He’s productions have been played by artists like Dave Clarke, L.F.T, Plant43, DVS NME and Sunil Sharpe.

I have been a big fan of Power's DJing skills and booked him to play at my techno night in my hometown of Mullingar about 20 years ago, so we go way back and I am delighted to have him on board.

Warehouse Manifesto presents: POWER In The Warehouse

Power, a true stayer to the underground has a made his mark in the electronic music scene and continues to make significant strides across multiple facets of the industry. From the early 2000’s as a DJ to his current ventures in music production, and radio hosting. As a DJ, Power has performing at an array of prestigious venues and festivals across his native Ireland and in Europe. His dynamic sets, which blend styles and genres, while always being true to Detroit Techno & Electro earned him residencies at multiple club nights, often playing along side genre elites like Jeff Mills, Juan Atkins, Derek May to Dave Clarke, affirming his deep connection to the underground music community. While he also curating & promoting his club night Electric Circus for over a decade, hosting names Robert Hood, Steve Rachmad to Luke Slater. A notable aspect of Power’s career is his role as the host of the ' The Electric Circus Show ' a pirate radio show on opentempo fm. Through this platform, Power is dedicated to introducing listeners to a wide range of global talent that airs monthly. As a producer, Power's work has also made waves, with releases on labels such as Hilltown Disco, Mini Man Records,TakeOverRecords and Psykosocial. In addition to these Power oversees a record label, Midi Mode Records adding another dimension to his multifaceted career. Through his label, sonic sounds of Electro & Techno can be found as he continues to push the next wave of electronic music.
