Superfreq kicks off 2014 in some style with this new five track EP from Dance Spirit, the mysterious American duo that work around a philosophy based on attaining subconscious harmony through rhythm, timbre, melody, and movement. So far they have done so on labels like Supernature and Maison d'Etre as well as Superfreq of course, and this magical EP once again proves they are in a class of their own.

The EP was made during a 6 week stay in sunny Barcelona but it comes with a sombre side note from the duo: “Being around the scene as long as we have you see people get sucked into the dark side of drugs and partying, and in LA there have even been a few suicides in our dance community, so its a message about respecting the music and the culture. If you are here to escape, you might want to tell someone and get help.”

And so to the sounds, which kick off with ‘Take In The Night’, a squelchy synthesis of bobbling house beats and sharp, crisp percussion that gets tethered to earth with a big elastic bassline. There’s plenty of decay and dirt in the way the track evolves, and more than a hint of dystopian post- apocalyptic vibes to the haunted spoken word vocals.

Following a dub version, next up is ‘There You Are’, which is another otherworldly fusion of alien sounds, scuttling bacteria and eerie synths. All this great sound design is tied to a deep mid tempo groove and Dance Spirit really create a whole world for you to get lost in.

‘I Got You’ is a supple bit of late night tech house with a dark but libidinous vocal and widescreen synths that really sounds like a pained lullaby, before final track ‘Patterns’ drops a lighter, uplifting house groove with loose limbed drums, colourful melodies and plenty of subtle disco atmosphere.

This is a great EP with which to start the year for Superfreq, and one that confirms Dance Spirit are very much on the rise.

I loved making this track, It should seemingly fell together and seemed to work. The album artwork is of me when I was travelling around French Polynesia in 2005 - It is on a remote island next to Tahiti called Moorea. It was a lovely place, perfect for a Holiday!

Jonas Saalbach - Morgen

It starts without rush. Natural sounds, soft pads, a diverse soundscape, open minded. Then the bass is coming in - straight and loud. A mixture of organic and electronic music, a mixture of old and new - welcome at the “Ancient Lake“, so clear and colorful. We are invited by Jonas Saalbach, a well known Live Act and producer from Berlin. On his first album he combines melodies and dancefloor elements, hard bass lines and story telling instruments.

We’ll find tracks grown with time on the album. Some are based on classical techno styles like “Driven By Madness feat. MZ Sunday Luv“ and “Hammada“. Others are made for listening and dreaming like “Thinking Of You“ and “June Gloom“. You can feel the spirit of summer in every number, the desire for adventures in the nature, the energy of the sun. Jonas Saalbach presents his summary of a year full of travels and studio nights. His cooperations with Paul Klatt for example, are an important part of his work. Berlin is a big playground for him with a lot of inspiration every day and so the album is like a story board of life, a perfect starter for a new season, energetic and unstoppably creative.

Without a doubt we can call it a comeback connecting to the huge success he already had on Cecille or Ricardo Villalobos label "Seisdrum" some years ago.

His recent Beatport top ten releases in several genres on Crosstown Rebels, Radiant and his debut on mobilee beginning of the year proof his strong feel for the actual electronic movement. His Ibiza residency for Bedouin´s Saga events at Heart Club this summer is the perfect playground for his sound.
