Linafornia's "YUNG" is out January 22 via Dome Of Doom.

The act of repurposing defines the creative vision of Los Angeles' Linafornia, flipping samples from various decades of music culture into unique moments of expression. Linafornia is scheduled to drop her Dome of Doom debut LP YUNG on January 22nd, creating a bridge to the foundations of gritty and soulful LA based beat music. Her career expands by the year and with a tenacious passion for lively performances, it's with great honor she's taken first place in the last two Beat Cinema Beat Battles. The last of which was judged by Rolling Stone, Forbes and LA Weekly writer Jeff Weiss, Brainfeeder's Daedelus and Alpha Pup Records' Astronautica. Her foundations and current path is planted firmly in Los Angeles' Leimert Park, born and raised off an eclectic range of influences and inspiration found within the region's thriving community.  

Constructing YUNG primarily with an SP 404 and SP 555, the record is full of infectious grooves, neck-snapping drum lines and collage style layering. Everything you hear is an arrangement of real time techniques. A balancing of sound with rhythmic soul, powerful vibratro and celestial texture. Her live shows have the same powerful energy affect as her debut and she is one of the few producers in California that deviates from utilizing laptops during performance. The sample choices on YUNG merge between her love for '60s / '70s music and growing up on the diversity of hip hop coast to coast. From The Meters and Roy Ayers to Busta Rhymes and Jayo Felony, YUNG is a true repurposing of African-American music culture, melted down and remolded to define the vision of an entirely new generation.

It is with Linafornia's approach to hip hop instrumentals that she has slowly become more aligned with one of her biggest influences: Madlib. Raw, gritty and soulful beats that pay homage to Los Angeles and the foundational producers from the region. Visionaries such as Dibiase, Ras G, Flying Lotus and Samiyam also come to mind when thinking of Linafornia's place in modern music. YUNG has an abundance of flavor, mastered to the rawest fidelity levels you can imagine from Dome of Doom label owner Wylie Cable. Stand out piece "Wetttt" is an organic ride into the inner workings of J Dilla, while "Xtrctions" flips Erykah Badu's "The Cell" unlike any other producer has before. Brazilian loops to Fela Kuti flips to Lauryn Hill quotes, the music travels the globe and comes back full circle to her base in Leimert Park.

YUNG releases on the 22nd of this month with Dome of Doom on both cassette and digital formats. A limited run of 200 cassette tapes of YUNG will be offered online and at her live shows. YUNG will be complemented by a string of performances in the Southern, CA region during the week of release.

Linafornia "Wetttt"

Two years ago I played at Studio 9 in Vilnius, Lithuania. The following day I missed my flight home and ended up spending an extra day, which gave me a chance to explore the city with my friend Linus, who took me to the Contemporary Art Centre. It was there I spotted a book named ‘Rojus’, that Linus told me translated as ‘Paradise’. The word and striking cover of the book stuck in my mind. A few days after returning home, I turned on to a National Geographic documentary named ‘Designed To Dance’, explaining the courtship rituals of Birds Of Paradise. As I watched, i jokingly began drawing similarities between these birds’ attempts to captivate and impress the opposite sex with dance, and the way strangers try to attract one another in clubs and interact on the dance floor. This gave me the idea of creating a record of functional club music, sequenced as if it were a club night, from doors to closing, using samples of these Birds Of Paradise and their habitat. Thus, Rojus.

We're big fans of the Cold Tonic crew and they blew the roof off last time they joined us in the shop for an in-store session with label heads Krystal Klear and Maurice Alexander playing alongside Gerd Janson and Philip Laurer. Since their first release we've been strong supporters of their imprint and but their newest release really caught our attention since it features a brand new signing on the flip. "Nothing But A Freak" marks Sandboards musical debut and we can't get enough of it! The emotional House cut combines rattling drums and melancholic chords to comfortably sit underneath a spoken word monologue about the one thing that keeps us moving... We're very excited to see what this the New Zealand duo comes up with next! Completing a triptych of fantastic LPs for 2016, Will Saul’s Aus Music is delighted to announce the debut full length fromYouandewan. The Berlin based Brit’s ten track ‘There Is No Right Time’ lands in October 2016 and shows a distinct development of his musical style.

Youandewan is Ewan Smith, a DJ and producer who has quietly but consistently gone about forging his own tender brand of deep house. He has been doing so since 2009 and most recently settled on this label with tracks that are shy but seductive, and full of both motive and emotive forces. This album stays true to that narrative, but sees Ewan finding his feet with his mostaccomplished and elegant work to date.

Much of the music was sketched out during a wintery Berlin three years ago. Having left London, hungover from a breakup,Smith found himself broke and secluded in an apartment for four months. All this lent the music he wrote a melancholic vibe;one that nods to the lonely nature of the job and to the darker side of constant partying and all that comes with it.

A swelling, expansive piece of melodic atmospherics starts things off, then the soft hues of analog chords bring a neon glow to

the weightless whirl of ‘Be Good To Me, Poly.’ Soaring synths marry with a raw drum and bass combo on “Waiting for L,’ then ’Time To Leave (Can’t Mix)’ resets to a piano laced beatdown vibe that is wilfully wallowing. ‘10405 (Alice)’ is a shimmering, crescendoing piece, and from there the second half of the album begins to take an upward and optimistic swing through the floating, graceful harmonies of ’Our Odyssey.’

‘Something Keeps Me Real Quiet’ is a concession to the ‘floor with its rusted electro slither, ‘Left On Lucy’ calls upon friend Huerta for a hi-tech soulful house cut Derrick May would be proud of, and 'Earnest Kelly' nods to the ‘80s with its stomping retrosynthesis. Finally, ‘4D Anxiety’ allows all the pent up emotion and energy to dissipate with a playful hip-hop jam effortlessly tapped out on an MPC.

‘There Is No Right Time’ is a listening album which proves that deep house done well needn’t be reserved for the club. It’s a vulnerable and musical work that stays with the listener long after the final chords have dissipated.

In all honesty this is just a beautiful track, and perhaps one of the most re-listenable we’ve ever featured. Jesse Bru has woven together a cacophony of stylistically disparate samples & synths incredibly delicately and masterfully.  Placid yet upbeat, easily listenable yet intricate, black yet white, yin and yang, baby.
