Big things have small beginnings. Playhouse 001 was such a emergence. Founded as a subsidiary to Klang Elektronik in 1995 by Heiko M/S/O and Ata to give their everlasting love for and influence of original US-American house music a home, a single-sided 12-inch pressed with two tracks and a simple pink label and no additional info was all that one could see or hear. Some copies featured a hand-written claim with silver marker that gave the catalogue number away, but not much else. Mystery triggers interest. One of the oldest parlor tricks in the music industry – and a working one. But you also have to have the content to back it up.

Holy Garage’s Surprise fulfills that demand. The spark that started the fire is a joint venture of Roman Flügel and Jörn-Elling Wuttke alias Acid Jesus with Heiko and Ata joining the recording session as vibe controllers. Taking place during a hot summer day in Wuttke’s grandparents’ garage (hence the name) in a small town between Frankfurt and Darmstadt, and only interrupted by trips to the local swimming-pool, the results still sound magical. In its main mix, Surprise is a classic early nineties house track that heavily nods towards the Big Apple, house music’s disco roots and the power of swinging drum programming, albeit with meticulous production work and engineering. In short, it sounded and sounds as un-German as Germans can. The Holy Bassline Mix on the other hand is already in the shape of things to come. Carried by a Roland TB-303, sprinkled with trance bits and elegiac pads, its in perfect balance.

Others thought so as well. Heavily supported by David Holmes and Andrew Weatherall, it was the manager of the latter who licensed it to Eye-Q Records UK with the addition of the Fake Jazz Mix and ordered remixes by freshmen Isoleé and Losoul who became pillars of Playhouse. The first known for his idiosyncratic and sculptural ways of creating dance music meets the irresistible funk of his peer and both add spice to the already great menu. Here you have the chance to listen and digest Surprise in all its glory and entirety for the first time. Carefully remastered and processed by Lopazz and packaged by Running Back. 04 Holy Garage - Surprise (Holy Bassline Mix)

Whoever Client_03 is—their official bio says "neither human nor machine"—they certainly love electro. In the interview below, they say making it is "all I do." The stubbornly anonymous project has been making waves across continents and scenes, introducing audiences used to dubstep, drum & bass and trap to the distinctive joys of electro. Through a series of self-releases dating back to 2019, Client_03 has earned a fanbase with simple graphics and wonderfully jargon-y titles—"Prosperity Stream Divider," "Interpersonal Relationship Assessment"—that more than live up to the genre pastiche with genuinely funky electro grooves. Pitched between loose and robotic, their tracks are what we call rollers: stackable, interlockable and reliable.

This RA Podcast was recorded live at last year's Bass Coast Festival, where the masked producer's set was among the most anticipated. They—or it—didn't disappoint, and here we've got 60 minutes-plus of smooth and occasionally raucous electro that eventually mutates into dubstep, jungle and beyond. There are several spinbacks, tons of Client_03 material new and old and a few select tracks from artists like Sam Binga, Nikki Nair and Fixate. It's the sound of a certain kind of future, as refracted through its past.

"This little mix is a documentation of a magical summer in my house. I've had friends stay over during an intense long heatwave, and these tracks have been sketched out while hanging out drinking aperol spritzes and chilled wine, and after my friends have gone to sleep. It's a combination of sketches, short jams, almost finished tracks and repurposed bits. 
For those wondering who I am, I am a guy operating, quite comfortably, from the shadowy underbelly of the european experimental techno scene since the early 2000s. I was talked into releasing an EP on 030303 Records in 2014. Since then I've put out more stuff on Analogical Force, Love Love Recs, U.T.T.E.R., Furthur Electronix. 

I’ve gotten reports that both Autechre and Aphex Twin have DJ:ed my tracks, which is perhaps my biggest (second hand) achievement so far, since they are known for quite different styles of music.
