قَلْبِيْ يُحَدِّثُنِيْ بِأَنَّكَ مُتْلِفِيْ
رُوْحِيْ فِدَاكَ عرَفْتَ أَمْ.. لَمْ تَعْرِفِ
لَمْ أَقْضِ حَقَّ هَوَاكَ إِِنْ كُنْتُ الَّذِيْ
لَمْ أَقْضِ فِيْهِ أَسَنْ وَمِثْلِيَ مَنْ يَفِيْ
مَا لِيْ سِوَى رُوْحِيْ.. وَبَاذِلُ نفسِهِ
فِيْ حُبِّ مَنْ يَهْواهُ لَيْسَ بِمُسْرِفِ
فَلَئِنْ رَضِيْتَ بِهَا فَقَدْ أَسْعَفْتَنِيْ
يَا خَيْبَةَ المَسْعَى إِذا لَمْ تُسْعِفِ

يَا مَانِعِيْ.. طِيْبَ المَنَامِ وَمَانِحِيْ
ثَوْبَ السَّقَامِ بِهِ وَ وَجْدِيْ المُتْلِفِ
عَطْفاً عَلَى رَمَقِي وَمَا أَبقَيْتَ لِيْ
مِنْ جِسْمِيَ المُضْنَى وَقَلْبِيْ المُرْهَفِ
فَالوَجْدُ بَاقٍ. وَالوِصَالُ مُمَاطِلِيْ
وَالصَّبْرُ فَانٍ.. وَاللِّقَاءُ مُسَوِّفِيْ
وَاسْأَلْ نُجُوْمَ اللَّيْلِ هَلْ.. زَارَ الكَرَى
جَفْنِيْ وَكَيْفَ يَزُوْرُ مَنْ لَمْ يَعْرِفِ

إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ.. وَصْلٌ لَدَيْكَ فَعِدْ بِهِ
أَمَلِيْ وَمَاطِلْ إِنْ وَعَدْتَ وَلَا تَفِيْ
فَالمَطْلُ مِنْكَ لَدَيَّ.. إِنْ عَزَّ الوَفَا
يَحْلُوْ كَوَصْلٍ.. مِنْ حَبِيْبٍ مُسْعِفِ
عُوْدُوْا لِمَا كُنْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْوَفَا
كَرَمَاً.. فَإِنِّيْ ذَلِكَ الخِلُّ الوَفِي

أَخفَيْتُ حُبَّكُمُ.. فَأَخْفَانِيْ أَسىً
حَتَّى لَعَمْرِيْ ..كِدْتُ عَنِّيْ.. أَخْتَفِيْ
وَكَتَمْتُهُ عَنِّيْ فَلَوْ.. أَبْدَيْتُهُ
لَوَجَدْتُهُ.. أَخْفَى.. مِنَ اللُّطْفِ الخَفِيْ

إِنْ قُلْتُ عِنْدِيْ فِيْكَ كُلُّ صَبَابَةٍ
قَالَ المَلاحَةُ لِيْ.. وَكُلُّ الحُسْنِ فِيّْ
كَمَلَتْ مَحَاسِنُهُ فَلَوْ.. أَهْدَى السَّنَا
لِلْبَدْرِ عِنْدَ تَمَامِهِ ... لَمْ يُخْسَفِ

وَعَلَى تَفَنُّنِ وَاصِفِيْهِ بِحُسْنِهِ
يَفْنَى الزَّمَانُ وَفِيْهِ مَا لَمْ يُوْصَفِ

English Translation:

Selected verses from an Ayyubid-era poem by Ibn al-Fāriḍ
“My heart tells me you are my undoing”

My heart keeps telling me that you will be my ruin,
My soul is yours in sacrifice, whether you know it or not.

I never fulfilled the right of loving you, though I am the one
Whose loyalty never faltered, and one like me should be faithful.

I own nothing but my soul, and he who gives himself
For the one he loves is never wasteful.

If you accept it from me, then you have granted me grace,
But what a bitter loss if you do not.

You who deny me peaceful sleep
And dress my body with sickness and my longing with torment,
Have mercy on the last flicker in my eyes
And what little you have left me of my worn-out body and tender heart.

Longing remains. Union delays me.
Patience fades. The meeting is postponed.
Ask the stars of the night if slumber has ever visited my eyelids,
And how could sleep visit one it does not know?

If you cannot grant union now, at least promise it,
Give me hope, and even if you delay the promise, do not fulfill it,
For a delay from you, when loyalty is difficult,
Is as sweet to me as union granted by a generous beloved.

Return to the loyalty you once knew,
For I am that faithful friend.

I hid my love for you until sorrow hid me,
And by my life, I nearly vanished from myself.
I concealed it even from me, and had I revealed it,
It would have shown itself subtler than the subtlest secret.

If I say I hold all yearning for you,
Beauty itself says to me: “And all perfection is in me.”
His qualities are complete; if he gifted his radiance
To the full moon, it would never wane.

And with all the attempts to describe his beauty,
Time itself would end while in him remains what no one ever described.
