Qur’an Shaheed is a 28 year-old pianist, poet, singer and songwriter based in Pasadena, California. She began playing piano at the age of 4 under the teachings of her mother, Sharon Shaheed and grandmother Monique Simpson. Qur’an studied classically throughout high school and briefly in college until she decided to switch directions. In 2012 she began pursuing a career in songwriting, drawing on her previous musicality, but incorporating her voice. Qur’an has since performed her original music in and around Los Angeles, as well as collaborated with Ktown Oddity & The Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra (of which her father Nolan Shaheed is also a member). She is the keyboardist for Jimetta Rose’s gospel choir The Voices of Creation. Her focus now is collaborating with various artists and releasing music in the spirit of uplifting and uniting people.

In 2017 Qur’an met Los Angeles producer and keyboardist Jesse Justice. The two clicked and got to work quickly. This freshman release from Qur’an is a culmination of personal growth and discovery, almost three years in the making. Throughout, they explore their own musical limits by pushing themselves and each other, resulting in a unique, honest project. The musicians who appear on this album are young and incredibly talented artists from LA including: Mekala Session, Devin Daniels, Aaron & Lawrence Shaw (Black Nile) and more.

Xinxin is a quartet composed of Janize Ablaza (vocals, guitar), Stephen Reed (Drums), Carlos Elias (Bass) and Jonah Huang (Keys).

A deep groove runs central throughout Xinxin’s self-titled debut record. The band is always in conversation, emphatically exploring the space around the pocket as the songs slowly bloom. In more ecstatic numbers like “Star Spell” or the lightly-serrated lead single “Trust,” the group still finds room to stretch out and tastefully flex. The dense, almost hidden complexity of the music is always in service to the emotional content of the music and lyrics and the light, fleet-footed mix highlights each player’s articulate, nuanced voice in the conversation.

Xinxin began as Janize’s solo beat and songwriting project, ignited by her dissatisfaction with performing other artists' material in academic and public settings. The band’s collective artistry combined makes for a jazzy, 90s-R&B-indebted sound that captures the feelings of exploration, discovery, and freedom found in childhood. Xinxin is well-known in their stomping grounds and those who see them live usually become cult fans.
