TB Premiere: Julian Fijma - To The Jungle [Airtime Records]

Moxy Muzik hits release number 30 & boy its a big one! A new EP from Glasgow's underground hero Tiptoes. These are tunes that label head Darius Syrossian has been dropping for a while out on tour, with all who hear them desperate to get a copy. They finally arrive with a remix from lady of the moment, and PIV associate Kellie Allen. 

Tiptoes is a well respected figure who keeps a low profile. He doesn't do social media, but over the last 15 years his famously widescreen sets and top tunes on labels like Hustller Trax and SlothBoogie have made him a real favourite. 

Opener 'Cuss Tomato' is a brilliantly catchy and slinky house groove. Think Kerri Chandler when he has his foot on the gas. The vocal is full of soul and the seductive chord work brings warmth to the lively drums. It's a classy party starter, make no mistake. 

The equally fresh 'Put Sum Down On It' is another irresistible house cut with timeless vocals. The smooth drums and rich bass bounce up and down and lock you in for the ride. Both of these are sure fire and stylish winners.

Kellie Allen has signed to the influential PIV and played all the cult labels shows around Ibiza and at clubs like Fabric. She is a long time friend of Darius and really comes through here. Her take on 'Put Some Down On It' is more pumped up, with punchy, rubbery kicks and busy synths zipping about the mix, while the vocal stabs become more fiery.

Heavy House Society is back with a bang in the shape of California raised and UK based producer MADVILLA, who drops a quality 3 track EP that’s sure to make its way into many sensible DJ’s tracklists.

Having crafted his own unique ‘ghetto deep’ sound, he has managed to land releases on labels such as Locus, No Art and Seven Dials, as well as gaining support from industry giants such as Sidney Charles, Seb Zito, Kenny Dope and Catz ‘n Dogz.

‘Don’t Stop’ is the name of the first track and it’s a lovely groove that awaits you here. A deeper affair that flows like a summer breeze with a deep subby bassline, a solid groove, a very recognisable vocal sample and a catchy synth line, it’s a track with lots of potential.

Up next we find ‘Booze Cruise’. Another production on the deeper end of the spectrum, “Booze Cruise’ is filled with funky synth sounds and wicked little melodies. Of course, there’s no shortage of a big bass, but that’s a given…

Finally, we have ‘Freedumb’, another top track on the deeper side of things. Again, MADVILLA stays true to his slamming beats and funky synth lines, to which he adds his trademark big time basslines to close this great EP out. Get stuck in!

Mancunian DJ and producer Black Hawks of Panama delivers a club-ready scorcher featuring a collaboration with singer-songwriter Bisi and a remix from long-running affiliate of the Hot Creations crew, Sidney Charles. The storied artist stitches an old-skool feel across the release, with Sidney leaving a modern take on his remix.
Black Hawks of Panama, aka Danny Whitehead, explains his process behind the EP. "I hadn't had my new Moog synth too long, and after tweaking a little, I got the bassline going and the track built itself from there. Bisi and I had been talking about making a banger...” he says before Bisi continues, “‘Nobody But You’ has been one hell of a ride. When Danny sent over the instrumental, I loved the vibe he had right off the bat. I booked a flight, wrote the lyrics on the plane and when we got into the studio, it was musical synergy, from the first chord to the last vocal.”
Nobody But You presents itself with an eighties style, robust kickdrums and a vintage-sounding synthline. An instant groover. "We have been working together for a few years now, and we bonded over our love of artists like Patti Labelle, Prince and 80s/New Wave and Chicago House" Danny says, elaborating on his work with Bisi. The listener can hear these influences on Sidney Charles’ remix of the track, who retains the old-skool vibe whilst adding his own contemporary twist with pitched-down vocals, snappy percussion and an infectious melody. Closing track We Will Not offers a peak-time mood, packed with punchy drums, ascending keys and the phattest of basslines. It shows the artist's versatility, who sums up his alias in his own words. "It's been a real journey since starting Black Hawks, but it's satisfying developing your own sound, and good to know there's lots more to come in 2023!"
Coming from parents who were promoters and DJs on the Manchester scene in the 70s, it was only natural for Danny Whitehead aka Black Hawks of Panama to pursue music. Having cut his teeth DJing on the White Isle, the project is Danny’s outlet for producing house music with flavours of northern soul, disco, deep house and the genre’s roots in Chicago and New York. With a story-telling approach in the studio, he has released on Midnight Riot, King Street Sounds and more. Having starred in the West End, toured America with The Blues Brothers and fronted the show as Mistress of Ceremonies, Bisi weaves her stage and life experience into both her performance and songwriting, leaving an air of mystery and depth to her musical style. A DJ, producer and label boss at the top of his game, Sidney Charles’ rich catalogue boasts recent releases via the likes of No Art, Locus, PIV, Do Not Sleep, Eastenderz, with his own Heavy House Society imprint welcoming material via the likes of Djebali, Okain, Sakro, Tripmastaz and Locklead to name just a few.

The all-new Rarebit Records debuts with a fantastic first release from founder Lucas Alexander.
Alexander has a rich cultural background that takes in Jamaican heritage and his years growing up in Cardiff. It was there he got into UKG, grime, reggae and jungle and became a mainstay on the Welsh scene at cult parties like Delete, Shangri-La & CYNT. As his profile rose, he headed further afield to hold residencies in Malia, Dubai, Marbella and Ibiza with highlights including a b2b with Richy Ahmed, Michael Bibi, Dennis Ferrer & Josh Butler at a notorious Solid Grooves afters.
With a string of releases on labels such as META, Moxy & Four Thirty Two, 2021 brought a new moniker after previously playing as DJ Pro. Now, the current face of Welsh house music is back with a wealth of fresh new material on his own imprint which will be a home for his own music and a launch pad for local legends in and around the Welsh scene.
Opener 'El Fuego' brings the party from the off: it is peak time tech house with sizzling synths and a killer bassline. The drums are big and the groove all-consuming, with subtle vocals and meandering acid lines woven in for extra impact on the dance floor. Next up, Alexander shows a totally different side with 'Let's Get Jazzy', a balmy deep house cut with rubbery drums, smeared chords and muted sax motifs. It's steamy and romantic for cosy basement parties but with an infectious and stylish groove.
This is a fantastic first EP that shows Alexander has plenty in his locker, and there is already plenty more in the pipeline for Rarebit Records, which is set to give the Welsh Electronic music scene a well-needed resurgence.
