Luca Cazal & Josh Baker kickstart Richy Ahmed’s new vinyl focused imprint, Back 2 Black, with a brace of intergalactic tracks.  The new label’s first release also features a remix from British electronic stalwart, Radioactive Man.

Cazal remains a central figure within the house & techno community; his DJ residency at Circoloco is longstanding and releases for labels like Crosstown Rebels, Classic Music Company, his own See Double label, and Richy Ahmed’s Four Thirty Two imprint have marked out his production prowess and ear for a good groove.  Josh Baker has been rising up the ranks over the last few years, with releases for Ben Rau’s META label, Locus and his own You&Me label.

On ‘Organ Nuke’, Cazal & Baker dip into the kind of spacey techno house that was forged by Detroit pioneers Underground Resistance, as funky percussion and organ stabs are coupled with dreamy pads and cosmic tones.  ‘Rocket Ship’ continues these themes, with heavy 909 drums anchoring a cheeky acid bassline and flashes of cosmogonic sound.

British DJ & producer, Radioactive Man, has long since been at the coalface of electronic music’s leftfield.  As one half of Two Lone Swordsman (with the late, great Andrew Weatherall), and multiple aliases for his industrious flow of releases, the revered producer injects a heavy dose of classy electro and Drexciyan vibes into ‘Rocket Ship’.  Rolling breaks unfurl in the electro beats as head scrambling keys and rasping bass stimulate the senses for a funkin’ body poppin’ workout.

The third release on Eastenderz offshoot BELIEF comes from rising star Julian Fijma, a Dutch producer who won plenty of plaudits for his digital-only outings in 2021 and '22. Although rooted in tech-house, all four tracks are bold, vibrant and riff-heavy, suggesting that they're peak-time, big-room anthems in the making. Fijma first opts for chunky bass, rolling drums, trancey riffs and psychedelic electronics ('Devious Dog'), before joining the dots between turn-of-the-millennium tech-house and contemporary peak-time tackle on the organ-sporting 'Shadow of Tomorrow'. Over on side B, 'Virtual Reality' makes great use of warped ass, semi-bleepy lead lines and excitable vocal samples, while 'Unresponsible Moment' is a smooth, hip-wiggling tech-house box jam with added organ stabs.

Josh Baker returns to You&Me Records with maybe his biggest release yet, ‘Work It Out.’

The title track sets the tone for the whole EP, made up of 3 weighty tracks which have been doing the rounds over the last 6 months. The lead track offers a hypnotic vocal hook along with a baseline that you won’t forget. Following on from that Pardy Hardy carries on the peak time club theme with a wobbly bassline combined with all sorts of glitches and playful synth lines. Rounding off the EP is Counter House. This once feels slightly more laid back, with hints of early 2000’s house vibes in there, but still works in them club situations.

Fast-rising DJ and producer Josh Baker is at the forefront of the UK’s emerging house talents having blossomed onto the scene over the past 12 months, guided by a string of stand-out releases and material via Rich NxT’s What NxT label, Ben Rau’s META and Chris Carrier’s Adult Only. Having founded his own event ‘You&Me’ in 2015, welcoming the likes of Apollonia, Traumer, Archie Hamilton, Subb-An, Enzo Siragusa, Spokenn and Voigtmann to Manchester across recent events, the series has quickly become one of Manchester’s most notable underground parties and 2019 will see the collective add yet another string to their bow as they launch their own in-house imprint courtesy of Baker’s three track ‘Scratchcard Luck’ EP this summer.
