Already loaded with a heritage that dates back to the early 1990s, Tranquil Elephantizer cues up the last ever Futureboogie single with the cosmically charged ‘Moon City’ EP.  LA’s Warehouse Preservation Society come correct with a remix of the title track.

As stalwarts of the UK & US West-coast scene Tranquil Elephantizer have notched up live & DJ performances across the globe as well as heralded releases for Wicked, Matrix, Definitive, Language and Primal. Now firmly rooted in San Francisco, lead producer DJ Shakra has kept the vibe alive over three decades and still bounces tracks across continents with original members; Alexi Worrall, Crispin J Glover and the Kedros Brothers.  Darius Kedros delivers here on additional production and mixing duties, with relatively new crew member ‘Alcyone’ bringing another level of keyboard & modular synth mastery, elevating proceedings further into the ethereal realms.

Across two mixes of ‘Moon City’, ‘Sugarlump’ and ‘Slow Brew’, transcendental vibes are set, as acid licks and sci-fi kicks are explored amongst the distinctly dubwise beats and heavyweight bass tones.  Ambient house never sounded so relevant as it does now, and the ‘Moon City’ EP drips with this esoteric sound.

Warehouse Preservation Society follow up their Futureboogie released ‘Endlessly’ EP with a stellar remix of ‘Moon City’, as chugging beats, industrious percussion and a toxic brew of kaleidoscopic synths, pianos and 303 bassline bizzness makes for a most heady experience.

Beatservice label regular Boblebad returns with their much anticipated new album ‘Rund i kantene’. Across eight magnificent tracks, he explores cross-dimensional funk, weird jazz and polyamorous house.
Boblebad, real name Ulf Moen Denneche, is a genuinely original creative and all-around production dynamo based in Oslo. He is equally adept at crafting immersive sonic textures as striking imagery and is a painter and visual artist as well as a producer. He debuted on this label last spring with 'Vill Falafel', and his powerfully individual music has also come on the likes of Eskimo, Full Pupp, Paper Recordings, and Aquavit Beat. Boblebad also plays the trombone for a cultured Afrobeat band and rousing, jazz-inspired big band. As such, he has deep musical roots and rich skills that all play out on this genre-defying new album.

Kosmische-informed crescendos define opener 'Rund i Kantene' before singles 'Kald Fisk' and 'Syrebad' demonstrate Boblebad's iconoclastic yet fun-loving approach to beat-making. The superb 'Syrebad' is a propulsive big-room bomb, locked and loaded for high climactic impact with its lively mix of laser chimes, soft tapping drums and muscular subs from the depths. 'Laminat' offers brilliantly spooky boogie from outer-space whilst there are rugged EBM-referencing synths on 'Tusker' and 'Havdans' is a neck-snapping dark disco beat. Smokey, left-of-centre electronics feature on 'Bred Last' and closer 'Funky Snegle' is a wonky and elastic rhythm to send you off loose-limbed.

Boblebad breaks all the rules while serving high-class club functionality and plenty of musical charm on this exquisite debut album.

Nomada Records has shown several times that they have a good sense for fresh talents. This time the label spotted the sample-based producer Martin Georgi (quietelegance, OYE Black, Seismographic Records).

He has already popped up in the deep house scene a few years ago, as Delfonic kissed the artist from his slumber by releasing tracks of him which originally were produced on vinyl back in 2008. So, no wonder that on the flipside of the new release, a contribution by Delfonic can be found. It is a live session, originally penned by Georgi and pursuing the idea of bizarre mash-up. In addition, on the B-side you will find another interesting name which can be interpreted as an “alias” of Martin Georgi himself. The A-side acts as an EP called “Motor City Damage Ep”. Here, Georgi was inspired by the rising civic movement from Detroit. While the car industry had abandoned D-Town, they left behind not only a high unemployment rate, but also unused industrial wasteland. Some of those very large areas are used now by a citizens’ initiative for vegetable gardens, bringing in a benefit for the citizens involved. Georgi was so fascinated by this initiative that he sampled and connected interview excerpts from the project, in strong contrast to interview snippets from different documentaries, which focuse on Detroit's suffering from poverty and unemployment. This is how the track “Green Motor Damage” was created. As a musical reinforcement keyboardist and synth lover George John (Kommerz, Gettogether, BlaqNumbers) got to the keys, giving the track a soulful funky touch. Another track on the EP’s A-Side is called “Summer Kisses”, which “romanticizes” the dystopian aura of the city Detroit with idiosyncratic monotony. Here Georgi adapted the idea of film director Jim Jarmusch who pursued a similar project in his film “Only Lovers Left Alive”.The third track is called “Waiting for a call” with a slight wink for the dance floor, but also an ironic statement on the exploitation of employees by outsourcing jobs to call center companies.

Music reviewer John Morrison (The Wire Magazine, Bandcamp) calls FSQ's 2020 album "Reprise Tonight", "a testament to funk’s enduring vitality. A veritable treasure chest of danceable grooves and memorable songs."

The concept album, the brainchild of FSQ's Chuck Da Fonk, tells the story of a person who finds they get one last chance to have the party of a lifetime.

Therefore it only makes sense that there's a 2022 follow up release, "Reprise Reprise Tonight", a remix album, that allows the listener to revisit the theme of second and in this case, third chances.

This set builds on the original tunes which feature an all star cast of disco and funk artists like Fonda Rae, Nona Hendryx, George Clinton & members of Parliament Funkadelic, and Dolette McDonald.

It took 10 plus years for FSQ to refine the originals to the point that music critic Morrison would notice the "Reprise Tonight" for "showcasing FSQ’s gift for upbeat, easy-digestible funk."

On "Reprise Reprise Tonight" you'll hear some remixes that were made early on the process of the original album production. For instance, Soul Clap Records label mate Michael The Lion remixed "Vibe Out Now" and the album title track when he was still known as DJ Apt One, and the FSQ project was called fONKSQUISh - e.g. several years ago. We held on tight to Michael's amazing remixes until the ultimate versions of the original songs were finally set.

FSQ's Sa'd The Hourchild Ali (RIP) shared with disco remix legend Tom Moulton the early work on the album several years ahead of its release. Moulton, loving what he heard, quickly turned in his "A Tom Moulton" mix versions of "Vibe Out Now'' and "The Infinite Reprise". Moulton's mixes could have been easily presented on the original album, yet they finally get their spotlight here on "Reprise Reprise Tonight". The same is true for Dr Rubberfunk's mix of "Dancefloor Democracy'' which was set before the funk tune was reworked by FSQ as an extended tribal house jam for the album's 2020 release. Much of this early instrumental work on the first FSQ album is produced by Grammy nominated producer G Koop, before multi-instrumentalists Chas Bronz and One Era joined the group and added layers of disco sounds.

We're fortunate that we were able to get amazing dance versions by FSQ's Italian friends Birdee and DJ Rocca on "Reprise Reprise Tonight". FSQ are huge fans of Ray Mang's heavily instrumented and often Balearic leaning remix work, and are blessed to have him and Brooklyn based Jitwam turn in cosmic remixes of the title track and "Dancefloor Democracy" respectively.

Sa'd The Hourchild Ali' shared the early works with Tom Moulton who quickly turned in his ‘A Tom Moulton’ mix versions of ‘Vibe Out Now’ and ‘The Infinite Reprise’. And most recently, his brothers in arms Soul Clap Charlie and Lee Curtiss were able to contribute 2022 efforts, adding their high octane remixes of "Peel Back" and "What They Don't Know" to the set.

"Reprise Reprise Tonight" features a new twist on the original album artwork by Parliament-Funkadelic visual artist R Stozo, and including P-Funk tinged characters of the remix producers contributing to the effort.

Berlin Newcomer YYARD Releases His Debut EP ‘Dead Neighbour’s Garden EP’ On 7 December via Sound of Berlin

Wrapping up sonically satisfying 2022 with a curveball, Sound of Berlin introduces a multi-instrumentalist and producer YYARD (born Yannis Anft) and his compelling debut ‘Dead Neighbour’s Garden EP’, a release that comes with a darkly comic backstory: “The title was inspired by the view I had from my room while producing these tracks,” Anft explains. “I think my neighbours on the opposite side of the street are doctors or something, cause they had a skeleton positioned right in front of their window.”

Permeated by a hybrid of tongue-in-cheek glitch and post-rave wistfulness, the EP springs to mind the genre-busting ‘Artificial Intelligence’ -compilations of the early 1990s Warp era. The title’s track spectral woodblock bass clangs underneath the skittery electro-funk beat – on the flipside it’s the rippling chords washing over the arpeggios that lend ‘Garden’ its stillness and serenity.

These distinct variations in textures and timbres are what this release constantly gravitates towards. “During the pandemic I wanted to finish a few ideas that have been laying around in my Ableton folder for a while,” Anft recalls. “I was experimenting with different styles and
feelings and thought Dead Neighbours and Garden were a good choice to map this variety.”

YYARD is the musical project of pianist, keyboardist, and producer Yannis Anft with a musical horizon wide enough to fit Coby Sey, Thundercat, and DJ Stingray. Anft draws inspiration from years of experience as a jazz pianist and a lively interest in other musical genres, art forms, and aesthetics including Japanese Zen Buddhism.

Born in 1993, Anft started playing the piano at the age of 11. From 2013 to 2019 he studied jazz piano at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne, with teachers such as Hubert Nuss and Jürgen Friedrich. Since then,
he has been active as a pianist, keyboardist, and producer. In addition to engagements in numerous side projects based in various genres, he is part of hip hop / neo-soul act SALOMEA and experimental jazz fusion project Delusional Mind. Live concerts and DJ sets have taken him to stages in Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Iceland, Denmark, Morocco, and Slovenia. After visiting Berlin clubs on weekends and getting a taste of the music scene, Anft moved to the capital in October 2021.

Soul of Hex - Phuria EP

Soul Of Hex is comprised of Emanuel and Gerardo Cedillo. The two young producers, DJs and multi-instrumentalists from Mexico, are involved with Tijuana’s ‘new rave’ scene establishment and have run Vicario Musique Recordings for over a decade. Their talent and love for music production was spotted by Larry Heard himself in 2014, who remixed Lip Reading, a track from their EP on CVMR.

This crucial collaboration particularly boosted Soul Of Hex’s popularity and their schedule has been very busy ever since. Soul Of Hex’s Phuria EP counts as number fourteen on Massimiliano Pagliara’s Funnuvojere Records. It is a collection of five pieces of exquisite production.

The title track is an Italo house piano belter with an acid character ready to provide ecstatic dance floor moments. The contrast between the wonky bass lines and the rarefied strings creates an ethereal yet euphoric atmosphere in ‘Luxor' and 'Sunday Sunday', two funk tracks imbued with romanticism. 'Voodoo Warrior' comes as a surprise: it is a peak time progressive house banger defined by a futuristic approach. Closing the EP 'Phuria (Acido Corrosivo)' is a stripped down version of the original title track, for acid heads only!

Jim303 or Jimmy Gatt (The Great Gant Chart) has been a busy beaver during Victorians long running lock-down. The rave crazed Gatsby loves all things hard and heavy. His style showcases a flare for 90’s rave with an overriding passion for 303 baselines (hence the name). From euphoric breaks to Ghetto house, his style is ripe for the early hour performances.
