Welcome to Hide And Seek!!!

You have accessed the audio companion to 'Hide and Seek', a panoramic image captured on 35mm film on Central Island, Hong Kong, circa 2011.  

The image before you was a moment signaled to me by a loud wail on the street, emanating from the boy running toward the lens. Seeing this energetic chase unfold before me, I immediately fell to one knee, clicked the shutter and hoped for the best.

It was the last image on that roll of film. 

As part of my submission for Inside I Out, I reached out to people all across the globe, asking them for their memories of play during their childhood, tying into the theme of 'Come Out To Play'. None of the participants saw the photograph before recording, so their recollections were not influenced.

Some of these stories are inspiring, laughter-inducing. Others paint a vastly different image of childhood and the effect it can have on us, right through to adulthood.

Ireland. Hong Kong. Mexico. Bulgaria. Dominican Republic. USA. Venezuela. Spain.

Despite the many thousands of miles that exist between these countries and cultures, the similarities in play and the energies that guide us are universal. 

Having listened to each memory, I began to chop and arrange, while composing an original soundtrack around them. There is an initial sense of calm, but the piece highlights the many stages of play, eventually reaching crescendo, where we lose all sense of time and energy appears limitless. 

Thank you for your time, for listening to these stories. I urge you to listen in its entirety. Come with a friend. Sit, listen, look and allow these tales to bring you back. Take a photo with the action behind you. Share with others and share your stories of play. 

I wish to incite conversation, to make others smile and to cause a sense of play within on first viewing, as YOU, the spectator observes Hide and Seek 'In The Open'.
