Vancouver resident, Drama Hands co-founder and underground club scholar Colin Moir, aka Spurz, is a proverbial diamond in the rough. With a very short CV, and a very low-key approach in his Drama Hands biz, he nevertheless emerges mid-2014 as a fully formed artist.

One that is almost invaluable in hinting at the stylistic expanse that is Tessier-Ashpool’s polymorphic ‘machine music doctrine’. He repurposes eski grime, jungle, Night Slugs inflections, ‘ardkore and Detroit electro into his own proprietary ‘club weapon’ model, wholly inspired by Vancouver’s gritty downtown and illegal after-hours. Created almost entirely from heavily modified samples, his TAR debut, “Urban Deity”, is built around a concept so elaborate that it borders on academic thesis. From the man himself: “It’s an ode to that delusion of youthful invincibility, and both the hubris and ecstasy inherent in feeling like you run everything. Designer sneakers and gaudy jewelry set against black technical fabric. Lush green foliage set against polished black marble. High gloss against matte. Excess.”

Opener “Black Locks” is a rolling, modern take on oldskool electro, intense and ever-escalating (almost literally, via its barrel-drum pitch-ups), possessed of the same spirit as recent offerings by the likes of Maelstrom, Atix, or Renaissance Man. “Growth Structure” is an unhinged drum track, always seemingly bursting at the seams with abyssal fervor, before resolving into lush synth whines. In its latter half, faithful to its title, it grows into a crystalline, dreamy Jersey club (-ish) ballad, punctuated by joyful sax slurs. “Slave Texture” is a metallic-piano-driven, eski-click-ridden hard techno/grime hybrid that slowly degrades into vitreous rhythmic noise pornography. Closer “Stepworks” is the EP’s definitive epitome of stylistic collage, blending Jersey club mainstays, grime clap patterns and electro sequences into a final product that, curiously, most alludes to heyday jock jams.

Back to Spurz again: “It’s all about working to build something bigger, something dangerous, in an inverse parallel to everything else.” And big and dangerous it is. Proceed with caution.

Carramba, Bert On Beats is back! After his last release on Man Rec featuring the might baile funk queen Deize Tigrona ("Pa Pa Pa") Bert toured Europe and collaborated with Branko of Enchufada on "Control" ft. Yadi. Now he returns to Man Recordings with a club ready burner that wacks out any Jumpstyle tune the Latin way.

Bert´s big new tune is called "High On Cuica" and it truly lifts everyone up. Who needs formulaic EDM drumrolls when the whip of a plain ol´Cuica can create the same buzz? Fed by a 3Ball reminicing percussion frenzy and an irresistible melody, "High On Cuica" makes clear that triplet grooves are here to stay and can rock any party any-other-way.

The original track gets remixed by a transnational crew of hot remixers. Milangeles spice up the melody with an Italian ghetto twist, Happy Colors remade "High On Cuica" into a hi-speed Merenge mix which at 192bpm is the fastest remix ever released on Man Rec, there´s French-Portuguese bass mechanic Mala Noche, who made a very individualist, arabic-melody-led downtempo version, and then there´s Brasils Pesadão Tropical which lays the Cuica down low in their trap remix. Four crazy remixes and a banging original - this tune is made for every twisted Latin party and freestyle dancefloors!!

At the height of the MySpace days, Man Rec boss Daniel found by accident the MySpace page by two then unknown producers from Northern Italy called Crookers. On their MySpace player they featured tunes such as "Atomic Baile Boy" that sampled from Daniel´s "Rio Baile Funk Favela Booty Beats" compilation.  Daniel of course was instantly hooked. He messaged Crookers asking whether they´d be up for releasing tracks in the Funk Mundial series on Man Rec and received an immediate answer. The resulting EP was the first international release for Crookers, and became one of the biggest releases on Man Recordings. Shortly after, UK dance magazine Mixmag called Man Recordings a "piping hot label".

For their Funk Mundial contribution, Phra and Bot a.k.a. Crookers teamed up withoriginal Rio funk MC Leka on the mike. Leka is a former Proibidão MC from the Rio community Parque São José which is known for it’s weekly street bailes, most notably the ‘Caldeirão’ baile. With „Para De Graçinha“ („Stop making fun of me“) she straightforwadly tells a playboy that his moves don’t impress her, nor the size of his dick. Classic tune!!

"Probably it got around already: In May one of this year's most anticipated and most important releases for Sonar Kollektiv is in store, Belgian soul singer and songwriter Liz Aku's debut for the label, “Ankhor”. The first single off the twelve-tracks strong album, “Seasons Change”, hits now the digital stores. Credits for the song go to producer duo Potatohead People (Nick Wisdom & AstroLogical). Their track “Blue Charms” (together with guitar player Danny McKinnon), already featured on their 2015 album “Big Luxury”, serves as the ultimate foundation for Liz Aku's tantalizing voice. To be honest, everything matches so perfectly, you more likely tend to imagine how these four musicians composed and recorded the song together in the same studio. Eventually they created a tune which is a pleasant presentiment for the album named “Ankhor” coming out in May 2017."

Belliqueux is the outcome of a long running friendship between Nessim Nazal and Rookie Sanchez, who met 10 years ago while they were still students. Sharing a common hunger for musical exploration through squatted alternative venues, early enthusiast of the growing new wave of tropical and global bass electronic scene, their sonic experiments led them to compose dancing tracks setting up jerky, unstructured, complex rhythms filled with insane melodies.

In 2019, Pedro Del Son, DJ and globetrotter producer, joined the project, marking the transformation of the concept into a collective. Based in the cosmopolitan district of La Guillotière in Lyon, Mechant Mechant mixes genres, styles, cultures, setting no hierarchy between Durban Gqom, UK Bass, Cairo Mahraganet, Sao Paolo Baile Funk, as long as the music invites the audience to travel and dance.
