Scorpio is the latest collection of kinetic electronic pieces from Chicago producer Lockbox aka Jesse Briata. Largely influenced by grunge and breakcore aesthetics, the digital-only EP follows Free VDV Prayer, a large-scale work released in March on Hausu Mountain.

New York-based producer, DJ, and visual artist Jesse Briata has been releasing nihilistic club artillery for over a decade as Lockbox. The manic, hyperkinetic electronic arrangements featured on his previous albums Prince Soul Grenade and Demonoid have been eroded, fragmented, and decontextualized into his latest darkly poetic sonic novel, Neo Druid. The album reflects a period of turmoil, trauma, and catharsis, during which Briata lived as a drifter across the Midwest. 

Exploring the theme of digital isolation in the context of contemporary club music, Neo Druid is a deeply personal artistic statement. “This album came from stretches of time where I was literally just consumed by music. I wouldn’t eat or sleep properly. I would live in random peoples houses and bring an OS9 computer and all my hardware and just set up and work on the same track for a week,” he explains. “To go from that experience to a club type situation, which was my only lifeline to society, could sometimes be kind of jarring. I started reflecting moreso on the patina of the experience that people have in clubs, and tried to make something that functions as an impression of the entire continuum of dance music that still operates as functional pop."

New York producers Gobby and EZB are responsible for some of the most wildly inventive music right now. SanTanDer, their second EP under the moniker MūT, is unlike anything that has come before. “These tracks were made during a cold, broke winter when we were living in my one-bedroom apartment, sometimes working together all night, sometimes tagging each other in on opposite schedules,” EZB says. “I’d work on them in the evening, then Gobby would tweak them in the morning.”

Although the pair have been making music together for over a decade, MūT is their first proper collaborative project. EZB explains how, after a long period of social separation, “MūT happened as soon as we were reunited in New York. Some of these tracks have been ideas for 10 years but none of them were made on purpose, MūT just happens when we are together.”

SanTanDer and last year's self-titled predecessor showcase the uncompromising vision of two artists who have established themselves as DIY heroes in the East Coast experimental music scene. In recent years, Gobby has released several great albums, EPs, and singles for labels such as UNO NYC and HOSS Records, and EZB has experimented with an array of styles, ranging from revisionist pop-punk to wonderfully weird psych noise.

“MūT is the result of total understanding and complete trust in one another -- sharing our unanimous vocabulary after years apart,” EZB says. “It’s the soundtrack of frustration of the menial monotony dealing with every day and a document of a friendship unlike any I've ever had. This is a modest slice of a gargantuan amount of material we made together during that time.”

Chicago’s Jesse Briata (aka Lockbox) returns to Primordial Void with a new single, “Dream Detective.” The latest offering from the producer’s forthcoming album Spiritual Malware pairs his signature hyperkinetic drum programming with glowing synth pads and stuttering vocal samples to dazzling effect. Inspired by Briata’s native Colorado, the track moves away from the gothic tones of last year’s Neo Druid and embraces the lively spirit of a genre he calls “Rocky Mountain techno.” Its accompanying video, made with visual programming language TouchDesigner, is a colorful collage of webcam footage, 3D renderings, and vintage CGI novelties ripped from YouTube.
