Considered one of of the most polific jazz and pop artists in music, Grammy winner George Benson is quite simply the best! From the classic In Fight album, this remake of War's staple cut has always been one of my favorites. I love playing it in my dj sets, when I get the rare opportunity to play out! I just decided to make a more dj-friendly version with some solid drum work to fill it out. It's one of those songs that when you hear it, it takes you somewhere else. 
I hope your dancing and listening journey is good with this joint!

That Neil Diablo from Manchester's El Diablo's Social Club shows his edit chops again, joining the Kat label roster for this new four tracker. Kicking things off is 'Cannae Believe', an Italo / New York dubbed out-disco slo-mo electro-disco cut with synth stabs and 'Love Is The Message'-esque pads floating over moody proto-house beats with sassy vocals to boot. Hit! Next up is 'Disco Special', a 'walking' mid-tempo melter which drops guitar-led Balearia, funky bass, arpeggiated synths, syncopated hand claps and space toms a-plenty before lifting off into string-filled ecstacy. Big! 

On the flip we have 'For Your Love' is a slinky 2-step soul gem originally released in 1982 by the Fats Gaines Band and featuring sublime vox by Zorina. Stretched, diced and strung beautifully back together, this has summer anthem written all over it. Finishing things off is 'Christina Debs, Behind Bars''. Presumably by Christina Originally out on Ze Records and produced in Detroit by Don Was in 1984, this low-slung nu-wave disco chugger adds another dimension to proceedings and this EP feels all the mightier for it.

To commemorate the passing of the great jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd today, I'd like to share my edit, originally released on the Editions Disco label, of one of my favorite songs of his - the jazz-funk and breakbeat classic "Think Twice".  Produced by the incomparable Mizell Brothers, it was sampled (and provided the basis) for three straight-up classic records: A Tribe Called Quest's "Footprints", Main Source's "Looking At The Front Door", and Armand Van Helden's house masterpiece "Flowers".

Byrd's records were a gateway for many of us who got into the nascent jazz-funk, rare groove and breakbeat scenes of the 1990s as DJs and collectors.  But his 1970s albums for Blue Note like Street Lady, Places & Spaces, as well as those of his protégés the Blackbyrds, were not just a rich trove of hip-hop samples for the eager beat-digger - they contained great songs that helped us to appreciate jazz as a popular art-form that was still engaged with contemporary soul, funk and R&B music, and encouraged investigating its infinite musical dimensions further.  He was and, and is, tremendously important to my development as DJ and lover of music.  We've lost a giant today.  RIP.

If Daft Punk had written their song "Teachers" today, they would most definitely have had to include Herbie Hancock on the list... at least the late 70's version of Herbie that produced the cut edited here. Those crisp disco drums, rubbery bass line and, most noticeably, those talk box vocals, are featured all over their new album! But Herbie was doing it 35 years ago. Here's to the originators!
