KissFM Legends Part 2

I was just  listening to mix I made in 2006 whilst jogging and was like this is incredible, the glory days of DANCEROCK! Almost ten years ago...picture the scene: DFA, 2 Many DJs, MSTRKRFT, Peaches, Justice vs. Simian, Tommy Sunshine, Tiga, Who made Who, Chromeo, Vitalic, Miss Kittin and me and Alexander Technique as "DJs are not Rockstars" ruled the world.
Good lawwwdd we traveled to strange places and had too much fun!
This mix kicks off with a track that Alexander Technique and I did called "European Accent" which samples "Moskow Disco".  Then goes into a brutal MSTRKRFT remix, then of course The Juan Mclean who I would always run into on tour. Next, Alexander Technique and I did this cool remix of Datarock (who incidentally do a great cameo on Yo Gabba Gabba which I just watched with my daughter!)Then etc. etc. I am too tired to write the rest but if you need to know a track let me know in the comments. In 2004 The Prodigy asked me to rap something to this song. I thought it was so damn hot, I was like how are they going to clear this MJ sample? Answer is - They didn't! They cut one or two lines from my original lines and totally changed the track to become....MEMPHIS BELLS.  So grateful to have collaborated with the greats. Mitch Better Get My Bunny!  The very first music Princess ever produced in ye old 1994 from a 4-track recorder onto a cassette tape.  Named as a hilarious take on the popular catch phrase of the time "Bitch Better Get My Money!" and produced as a series of probably 10. Now for the first time available for a listen, in honor of Princess' 7th album release "Look What I Found!" - a collection of B-sides, Rarities and Demos featuring production by Andrew Wyatt (Miike Snow, Lady Gaga), Junior Sanchez, Curtis Curtis and more! But not this cassette, no, this "lost" tape would be the lo-fi beginnings of a long and lovely career....Let's weave the tale.
It's 1994 and young Princess is living in a studio on the fifth floor of a walkup on Clinton Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan (price=$500/month!!)- where drug dealers roamed and police shots rang out, because it was still scary New York and not Clinton Street Baking $60 Brunch New York.  Princess was a guitar player in an all girl psychedelic pop band called The Gamma Rays (who put out a couple of 45's on legendary D.C. label Teen Beat) and all the while was obsessed with hip-hop.  The year before, 1993, Princess had discovered a home 4-track recorder, all the rage in the 90s for producing DIY cassettes .  Get this- it was her roommate's boyfriend's 4-track, a fellow named Dallas, who was in a band called Pony with no other than James Murphy of DFA! Pony was no LCD though, just for the record :-) Princess and James Murphy and lots of indie bands used to drink shitty beer and play softball in Prospect Park Brooklyn in those days, and they all played dirty East Village clubs like Brownies, Pyramid, Under Acme etc.  The days!  Princess wanted to try her hand at sampling and would roll back the tape and press pause over and over again creating a kind of jerky sampling - and everything was fair game- David Bowie, The Beatles, The Beastie Boys, Fugazi, you name it.  With assistance from Bill Berger (the genius behind Uncle Wiggly) and Doug Pressman, she cranked out this tape, deciding on side B to be her "hip-hop" side (with the exception of alt indie songs "Nice and Spice" and "Sucky") and side A to be her "indie lo-fi guitar pop" side. This was an interesting choice as she would later be known for hip-hop and not guitar rock at all, but she was still scared to come forward as an MC, since it was after all 1994, and white MCs- let alone Female MCs- were scarce and largely ridiculed.  Not only did she put together the samples, rapped, and played guitar on the whole thing, she put together a band when someone from the Beastie Boy's label Grande Royale told her he was coming to NYC to see her play.  Her first show was at the Pyramid on Avenue A (also where Madonna had her first show in the 80's),  she went on at 2 am, the A&R named Carmello didn't show up,  but Princess Superstar was born.  CMJ Magazine went on to write a review of this cassette under "Futures" and printed her home phone number in the magazine. Many Major labels called her but nothing worked out....the rest as they say is history.

Crude but showing early glimmers of innovation and joy and insanity, this is MITCH BETTER GET MY BUNNY.
