Glasgow-based Craigie Knowes are back with their annual fundraiser for War Child, this being their third year in a row contributing to the charity. All profits derived from the sale of the two part compilation records will be donated to the foundation dedicated to supporting children and young people who are affected by war. As has become the norm for the Scottish staple, the releases will feature a variety of producers with a fairly diverse palette of sounds, from jungle to breaks to acid and beyond. Making an appearance on the first of the editions will will be Luke Vibert, DJ Overdose, Cynus, TEXTASY, ASOK and London Modular Alliance, who we have the pleasure of premiering today.

Ruggamuffin from London Modular Alliance is your prototypical jungle track throwing it back to the heyday of ragga as the track's title not so subtly suggests. Chopped drum loops, breaks and snare rolls? Check. Classic reggae and dub instrumentation and vocal samples? Check. Bone shattering bass meant only for speakers capable of reproducing the lowest of frequencies? Check. This track clearly wasn't made to reinvent the wheel but what it does is successfully builds on the existing (albeit classic) models and throws us on a bit of a nostalgia trip. Both London Modular Alliance and Craigie Knowes show once again that they're not looking to label themselves as purveyors of any particular sound and are unafraid to colour outside the lines. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙖𝙙𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝘿𝙅𝙞𝙣𝙜?
My first passion was radio. I've always enjoyed listening to programs on community radio. I absolutely loved these shows for their wide selection of non-mainstream music from all over the world. One of my favorites was called Strange Holiday on Triple R by Andras Fox and Lewis Fidock. They would play records found in op-shops with music from all over the world. I listened religiously whilst studying engineering. Music at the time was my savior. Even though I was studying engineering, I secretly aspired to be a radio host and record selector. The first step I took was collecting records which broadened my music knowledge and taste as I started to get to know labels from the old & established to the new and niche. One Monday night I was sitting with a friend at a bar in Footscray and noticed that there were decks with turntables but no Dj! So I thought to ask the owner if he could let me play my records and invite friends to play every Monday. They were like “yes go for it!". Eventually it became a thing and I hosted an event called 'Come and Play' every Sunday.  Anyone could come and play records, practice Djiing, and listen/dance. There I met a lot of local DJs and started getting into Djiing more. 

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙞𝙣𝙛𝙡𝙪𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨?
I grew up listening to two very different genres. One being top ten pop, R&B and rap from the UK and America on MTV. The other, traditional Arabic music including Shaabi and Tarab which is played regularly at weddings or on Sunday family gatherings whilst eating kibbeh naye and drinking Arak in a restaurant near a river. But I have to say when it comes to music my influences are always changing. I am always influenced by my surrounding community. For example, I went to Morocco last year for four months and was so amazed by the avant guard, experimental and progressive music scene there. I was blessed to get to know great musicians such as MMMC, Prophane, YZ, Lost Pattern, Raskas, 3xoj, Saad El Baraka. Since coming back to Melbourne, after the lockdown I've been revisiting some amazing local artists that are pushing the boundary in producing genre bending and futuristic music like Kuya Neil, Savage the girl, Waxworx, Dj Plead, Mirasia, Strict Face and many others.

𝘿𝙚𝙨𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙗𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙮?
Haha well! I really love house parties and we’ve been having lots of those in Melbourne since restrictions were lifted. It's tricky as we often find neighbors complaining about the genre of music we play and the volume! My ideal party would be a house party with no restrictions on music genre or sound levels. I also like house parties as they are way less pretentious and anyone can do whatever they want, there’s room to experiment.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 (𝙤𝙧 𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨) 𝙤𝙛 𝙞𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙤𝙧 𝙜𝙡𝙤𝙗𝙖𝙡 𝙨𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙚?
Arabic Music! I have a radio show called Salaam Radio on 3cr community radio (3cr.org.au) and my goal is to make Arabic music mainstream or as mainstream as it can get really!
I believe that not just Arabic music but also music from the SWANA region have been under the radar for a long time. That may be due to the fact that our region has been politically and economically unstable since the 90s if not before. 
Recently Arabic music is being revived by unfortunately predominantly European labels such as Habibi Funk, Acid Arab,  Radio Martiko and others which I find a bit bizarre! But I am also hopeful as more Arabic owned labels are forming such as Hizz record label, Harara, and Annihaya.
