In Salem, Massachusetts I let my inner magic girl out, explore the theme of Magic, and play my favorite style of electronic music, witchcore EDM! Witchcore is less of a fixed genre and more a vibe - dark, creepy, spiritual, emotional, psychedelic, and intense. The theme of this set is magic, which makes it oddly appropriate that I also used it as a manifestation ritual<3 I let my dark and witchy side shine through this mix, and express the unexpressable through music. ProblemChild's Eras Tour #7: Live from Isle Royale💚

This was not my first set played outdoors, or in a National Park. That would be Acadia. However, this was the first set I ever played where I had to lug my equipment on a three hour ferry, set up in the middle of the woods on an island with no access to electricity and wifi. Also my first time using a fallen-over tree as a table.

This mix was all about nature. INature in the outdoors sense, yes, but also human nature, and my own nature. What originally started as a basshead's ode to Mother Earth became something a bit more personal as well. Three days of backcountry camping in Isle Royale humbled me greatly. I thought I was ready for anything, but I quickly realized how underprepared I was out there and how much of a challenge this would be for me. Nature is beautiful, but it's also unforgiving, and has a way of showing you who you really are.

My attachment to nature has made my life richer in so many ways, and I hope this mix can communicate how magical it is to get lost in the woods, to lose one's mind and find one's soul:3

The Woods: at Isle Royale💚 (Shamanic Bass & dubstep)

As awful as some of its fans (and artists) have a reputation for being, I adore country and folk music - both for its melodies and instrumentation (an offshoot of traditional Celtic and Irish music, and a legacy of the heavy Scotch-Irish settlement of the old American South), and its lyricism. No other style of music is as good at telling a story as country does.

Country House is an underrepresented genre in the edm world. Avicii briefly had a moment with it, before his tragic passing in 2018. But many, many independent artists and DJs have explored the genre and remixed some of the country world's most popular and recognizable songs into fist-pumping house and hauntingly beautiful melodic trance. I've been collecting good remixes of country songs for a long time, preparing to make a mix like this. I've always wanted to bring more attention to the genre.

But as fun and danceable as it is, the thing that's always drawn me to country music is the lyricism and the stories. A good country song can tell a more compelling story in 3.5 mins than most novels can in 350 pages. Of course, there are some prevalent themes and tropes to country music: love stories, faith, family, appreciation for a more rural lifestyle. Not always themes that resonate particularly well with the lgbt community. But there's much, much more to country than the good ol' boy boot-stompin', rebel flag-wavin', god-fearin', try that in a small town stereotype most non-country-fans know. Some of these songs tell very human stories. Stories that just about anyone can relate to. 

Country music is also very good at telling the American story: work hard, play hard, love hard, live life to the fullest. It often has a working-class message as well, that is just a few steps away from expressing something like class solidarity and consciousness. And some country artists very much DO delve into the political left. 

With this mix, I wanted to celebrate country music through the medium I'm best at: edm and mixing. I also wanted to tell a story, the story of America. The first 3/4 of the mix is a fun throw-down country house set that could be appreciated in any small town bar in America, with some of the most iconic classics of the genre making an appearance. But the closing quarter explores some of the *other* American stories: the experience of minorities, the working class, and the disenfranchised. Punk rock, hip-hop, r&b, and classic country/folk protest songs tell just as valid a piece of the American story as pop-country does, and one that needs to be heard more often.

The name of this mix is Stories, and that's the theme I sought to explore. I did *NOT* expect that my live run-through of the set would become a story in and of itself😲 but lets just say... I didn't make any friends with my neighbors by playing this at a campground in the Black Hills of South Dakota on 5/31/24, the day after Donald Trump became a convicted felon😅

The story of how this live mix came to be is, perhaps, the most interesting one of the Eras Tour so far. Lots more to say about it! But for now, I'll let the music speak for itself💕

EDM changed my life. My musical horizons have broadened, but edm was and will forever be my first love. Beyond the music, the rave scene was the first place where I ever felt like I had found a community of people. This was the first place that ever felt like home.

And if I could point to a moment in time where it all started, it'd be EDC Orlando 2012. This was the era of kandi, glovers, PLUR, and "Have u seen Molly" shirts. To me, the early 2010s will forever be the golden era of EDM. Nothing will ever top the feverish intensity of the festival scene in those times, when this music first escaped the underground warehouses where it was born and hit the mainstream. Names like Avicii, Showtek, Knife Party, and Krewella will always hold a special place in my heart. This was the era when I connected to this music and this scene in a way that I don't think can ever be repeated.

EDC Orlando 2012 was the festival that converted me from a casual fan into a lifelong raver. This mix is an homage to the golden era of early 2010s edm, celebrating some of the tracks and artists and drops that defined this lifechanging generation of music. It was an extra privilege to play this set in Orlando, the city where it all went down, at the home of some of my best friends in the entire world, who I had the privilege of meeting through raving💕

There will always be new hot tracks blowing up the dancefloor or the minds of festival-goers, for years and years into the future. But you never forget your firsts. 2010s House will always hold a special place in my heart.
