The first Prodigal Son release features a newcomer from France, known by the name EXAL. He is a resident dj for Blocaus in Paris often held at La Machine Du Moulin Rouge. His first ever record is sure to make an impact with two excellent originals already proven to do damage to dance floors with good results and they are backed up by two stunning remixers on the flip side.  Inigo Kennedy and Héctor Oaks both put their own uniquely epic spin on Exals original tracks. The vinyl has been mastered by Matt Colton at Alchemy Studios here in London and the artwork story begins with our guy Sariel Keslasi from Tel Aviv.

As we turn to the next episode. Eric arranged to meet his father in a cold abandoned warehouse on an industrial estate on the other side of town, a building he knew only too well from just a couple years back. He’d been hanging out with his squatter mates and this is one of a few places they’d frequent. He’d been up to no good well that’s what his father used to say anyway. “I knew you’d come to nothing, you little piece of shit” his father said. “I gave everything to you and this is how you treat me, you ungrateful backstabbing waste of space”, as he sat there cable tied to an old wooden chair, rocking on its uneven legs, now knowing he had been lured under false pretences. “But did you really give me everything?”, Eric said as he sat there staring at canvas sack that covered his father’s disturbed and angered face, whilst he held his gun casually on his lap contemplating his next move…

The soundtrack is the first contribution by Stephanie Sykes of the Midlands, UK. With a history behind her connection to Prodigal Son, she steps up with two of her most impactful pieces to date, “Walking Alone” & “Glimmer Of Existence”. A mind full of inspiration, of sounds taken in from recent ventures and a wealth of experience from her residencies. Having had a very special 2016 this is only the beginning for Stephanie and a sampler for what’s to come. Her tracks are remixed on the flipside of the record, the brutality of South Londoner, Ansome, with his version of “Walking Alone”. Then the melodies of “Glimmer Of Existence” takes a philharmonic reworking from one of Glasgow’s finest Edit Select.

As we turn the page, Erics father wakes up with the moon light beaming on his face through the shattered glass, he's still in the warehouse, still sat tied to a wooden chair. He's dazed, trying to comprehend the mess that this father and son relationship has escalated to. Closing his eyes for just a moment of thought, he reopened them to find Eric standing over him, looking relentlessly unhinged. In Eric's hand is a bunch of paperwork, 'Look at this, look at this, you thought you could hide this from me!?!' he shouted. His father recognises the documents that hold the details of his safety deposit box. Through the grit of his teeth, he says to Eric, 'Thats all i have, all i've managed to keep from you, how can you treat your own flesh and blood like this. You make me sick, your no son of mine'. Within a split second of the last syllable leaving his lips, he feels the impact of a devastating left hook, Eric follows with 'You know why, and don't fucking tell me you don't!' As he picks up the paperwork and leaves the building with a smirk, his father lies there out cold, claret dripping on the floor.

The soundtrack comes from another heavily rooted Midlands connection with over a decade of experience in UK rave & techno culture. Chris Finke aka He/aT joins the Prodigal Son crew with two exceptional and rowdy original tracks, appropriately named, yet in true He/aT formation, we welcome to wax 'A Sorry State Of Affairs' and 'Not Exactly The Summer Of Love, Is It'. The latter of the two receives two remixes from Berlin based Brit Ed Davenport's alias Inland. He supplies both a sturdy Dub mix and an invaluable Melodimix.

Just before sunrise, Eric's had an eventful night after leaving his beaten father at the warehouse, unconscious, laid out on the floor. He had taken a pile of his fathers paperwork to a nearby late licensed drinking hole, rifling through it trying to make sense, of where the heaps of cash could be hidden. Whilst propped at the bar, half a bottle of bourbon in, the barmaid Kay who had been over-intrigued whilst pouring glass after glass, had said 'what are you looking for?'. Eric said 'what we want?'. She repeated this line in a confused manner 'what we want?' and laughed. 'Loads of money!!' he said. As he said that, he stared closely at what appeared to be map. This location was all too familiar to Eric, he recognised a place he and his father would go shooting cans in his early teens. He knew then he was onto something. Impulsively he said to Kay, 'You want to make some real money?', she didn't have to say anything, he could tell the answer. 'Where's your wheels he said?'. The pair headed out of town. Arriving at remote piece of land and like a fictional treasure map, X had marked the spot. Whilst digging with an old rusty shovel, hysterically laughing to himself , he said this is too easy. With that he felt the shovel clang on metal and out came the large box, loaded with cash. Eric sent Kay to fetch his cigarettes and whiskey from the car, as she lent in, Eric said 'The sun will burn hot today, but i'm gonna make it rain!!' as he flicked hundreds if not thousands into the air. As he watches the wind catch some of notes, spiralling upwards... For a moment, just a moment a thought of his misfortunate father runs through his mind....

The soundtrack of this chapter see's the return of Brussels based Parisian and known Blocaus resident EXAL, who featured on our first release late 2015. As his sound further mature's his heavy original tracks 'Endless Wrath' is remixed by one of Manchester's finest, Setaoc Mass who has been making waves since releasing on Figure and his own SK_eleven imprint. 'Destructive Behaviour' gets the treatment of London duo Ben Gibson & Fundamental Interaction, who together have proved extremely capable on their namesake Dyad Records.

One of Poland's freshest exports, if you don't know already, this is Sept and with his 'Mental Statement' EP for our 6th edition. 3x XXL bombs complimented with a heavyweight Joe Farr remix. 

Warsaw's Sept is undoubtedly ready for a busy future, emerging well respected from his local scene to becoming an international talent. This EP is an example of some his best pieces to date, in fact they are beasts for the dance floor. The title track Mental Statement, holds a kinetic energy with an infectious and menacing hook line, along with a taunting vocal 'Live, Die, Repeat'. Bristolian Joe Farr reworks the mayhem in his signature style, adding distortion, hooks and a multitude of devilish drops.

On the flip side more WMD's for the bag, 'Exhale' is a relentless naughty stomper that will slide well into any peak time. As will its dark horse counterpart 'Unleash', never more appropriate has been the saying... last, but not least. This is the type of carnage we endeavour to deliver in our movement, already this track has erupted many a rave played by a select few, with its 90's Jungle like break down, its been begging a track ID for time and now it's out there...

While we watched the current events unfold in the USA, we have been feeling pretty helpless, we wanted to speak sooner but we felt we wanted to take action rather than adding more words. We are sickened by the way individuals have lost their lives over the years at the hand of disgusting police brutality, most recently with George Floyd. But this all stems from systematic racism that generations have suffered. Some of us can’t really begin to know the true extent of how this has impacted millions of human beings over hundreds of years and while we know this may not amount to a huge donation... We believe that now is the time for change, we want to make a move towards this, even if it simply helps raise more awareness amongst our own circles.

Prodigal Son artists & friends have worked together over the past few days to make a compilation of which all proceeds will be donated to NAACP.org who are leading the fight for change in the United States, we know this is a global issue and will like to support everywhere but we have to focus on one movement at a time. We would like to thank Bandcamp for highlighting this as an important organisation to direct the funding to, as they recently announced plans to make considerable donations.

Please purchase if you can, pay at least £10 for 13 tracks or pay more if you feel you can. We will donate all the proceeds to the NAACP fight against racial based discrimination and their work to bring reform to the criminal justice system in the USA.

For our next vinyl release on Prodigal Son we welcome our newest recruit Kaylah from Hackney in London. His sound is tough & grimey, with captivating leads contrasting across this record. Old skool influences seem to be drizzled over this debut solo EP, but all in good measure of course, the music is forward thinking, driven with pace and ready for the rave. Some heavy hitters cut especially for those that are "Ardcore To The Bone".

Kaylah - Set Pace

Prodigal Son Records was established in 2015, after working on other labels, most importantly, it was something Chris Stanford could really call his own, its sound, its concept, its feeling. Growing up reading comics as a kid, the artwork had to be illustrative. The artwork is brought to life by talented sketchers and illustrators, but the brief is always Chris’s vision telling the story of a  modern, roughneck Prodigal Son with imagery on a dystopian setting. There is a level of quality control with the music, along with the community of artists slowly building over time, hence the slow output in the early years. Unless it’s somebody Chris has met in person or somebody he can envision being a part of the family and the identity of the label, there's only a small chance of on boarding. This may seem unjust to some, but loyalty and relationships built over years is important for developing the labels journey. It is more than likely you will see acts returning to release on the imprint time and time again. Chris finds it fascinating to see how the producers and remixers he’s worked with build on their own sounds and identities, developing as time moves on.

The labels style is much based on the influences Chris carries into his own style of djing techno. Elements of dark, moody, rawness with rowdy drums and menacing percussion that keeps the flow going strong. Also, he believes music needs to tell some sort of story otherwise what's the point?! Too dull & deep, sends you to sleep... Too relentless becomes hopeless... but a balanced variety is possible, whilst staying true to your sound. It’s important to remember the sound you are trying to project will come naturally if you stick to releasing & playing what you want to hear, as much as it is about making the dance floor move. By no means should we digest what practically is the same, yet again in disguise. 

2020 will see Prodigal Son reach its 5 year milestone having featured producers & remixers such as... Sept, Kas:st, Stephanie Sykes, Jokasti & Nek, Exal, Sosak, Insolate & Arnaud Le Texier, Joe Farr, Inland, Ansome, Inigo Kennedy, A. Morgan, Kaylah, Edit Select, Hector Oaks, He/aT, Nendza, Escape To Mars, Dyad, Setoac Mass, Codex Empire. The trip feels like it's still only getting started and has a whole lot to come….
