Tearing The Page
Li-Young Lee

Every wise child is sad.
Every prince, is a member of the grass.
Each bud opening opens on the unforeseen.

Every laughing child is forgetful. 
Every solitary child rules the universe.
And the child who can’t sleep 
learns to count, a patient child.
And the child who counts negotiates 
between limit and longing, 
infinity and subtraction.
Every child who listens  all night to the wind eventually
knows his breathing turns a wheel 
pouring time and dream to leave no trace.

and though he can’t tell what a minute weighs, 
or is an hour too little or too long.
he’s sure the play  he’s called away from each evening
 is the beginning and end of order 
in a human household.
He’s knows his counting to himself 
and his rising and falling ball
are appointed  by ancient laws his own heart-tides obey.
But he can’t tell anybody what he knows.
every wise child is heart-broken.
Every wind-strewn flower is God tearing God.
And the stars are leaves blown across my grandmother’s lap.
And of time’s many hands, he can’t tell 
the bloody from the perfumed,
the hands that rip
from the hands that mend
But he knows about good-byes. 
Some of them, anyway. 
The good-bye  at the door each morning,
a kiss for a kiss. 
The good-bye at bedtime, 
stories and songs until it’s safe to close his eyes.

And maybe he’s even sat in the waiting room  at Union Station
where dust and echoes climb to the great skylights
accompanied by farewells  of the now-going
to join the farewells of the long gone,

As old as night itself, 
he’s not old enough in the morning  to heat his milk on the stove.
Old enough to knot his shoelaces,  
he’s not old enough to unknot them.
Old enough to know to close the window  when it storms,
old enough to know the rain,  given the chance, would fall on him,
and darken him,
the way he himself colors the figures he draws, pressing so hard he tears the page

Every Wise Child Is Sad

I come in peace 

keep that negativity away from me
it’s a disease 
Now I wake up in the forest every morning brewing tea
had to separate my creativity from rolling weed
thought I needed inspiration 
now that shit just comes from me 

don’t go seeking adoration from the one you never see
she came and talked to me she said your song is on repeat I listen to it everyday while i go work on my physique

now I got reasons to cut the line and just dive into the deep
building pressure i feel it crushing i’m miles underneath 
now the distance is only growing the farther that i reach 
listen to me just take a breath and then let it all release 

now i’m flooring it cause what you sow in is what you reap
these tortoises are moving slower than when i sleep 
this ornament is just the ego that i defeated
brought it into the light and the life of it receded

i got razors on my tongue and blades in place of my teeth 
I found mazes in my brain and places you’ve never seen
I got places that i wait for victims that i can feast on
smoking  while i’m counting my problems but that’s the least of em

Now your losing resistance
assuming conditions
reducing ambitions
alluring conditions 
now you wait for my 

I come in peace
Keep the real ones all around me so i got some room to breathe 
Kept the best shit to myself because that shit was too unique 
Sometimes i feel like giving up but i can’t handle the defeat
Sometimes i think that it’s the end but then i end up on my feet
And even if no one knew me i’d still be making heat
and if i couldn’t rap then i would still be making beats
and if i couldn’t walk away then i would get there on my knees
If every decision was written in heaven then ___ begging at 7/11 got no one to blame but god
from close enough and far enough the difference between you and i starting to fade
think it’s different but to me it’s not
I got a lot of different names for the things you’re calling god 
you got a lot of shit to gain
so i take it with some salt
It’s just part of wisdom to know your wisdom is flawed
this shit is worth living just because you’re living at all
