Opening with a resonance of childhood reminders in “False Tense” that combines a shimmering synth with all-absorbing waves of bass. Subsonic Rush

Pola & Bryson are one of the great success stories in Drum & Bass and have achieved what many can only dream of in just a few years. It was only 2014 when we started to feature music from the lads, who at the time were releasing music separately, on their label Soulvent Records and now they’re signed to Shogun Audio. Two of Russia’s finest drum & bass producers have combined forces for an exciting new project. St Petersburg’s Microfunk mastermind Bop, and Moscow’s minimalistic groove guru Subwave, unite for their debut collaborative release ‘Love & Other Drugs’. With their elegant approach to drum & bass, this four-track EP fuses futuristic indie-electronica, 2-step UK garage, glitchy beats and 80’s inspired vocal stylings.

Progressive euphoria is the name of the game in ‘Teardrops’ as Bop x Subwave pick apart the structure of D+B in this warm, delicate and hypnotic glitch number. Following suit is ‘Space Warp’ - darker with eerie undertones, packaged as a sub-heavy stepper.

The second half of ‘Love & Other Drugs’ sees the duo branch out beyond the realms of traditional D+B. The bittersweet ballad ‘Don’t Wake Me Up’ is kitted out with a definitive 80’s style. Seeing the EP home is ‘The Touch’ with the syncopated beatwork of 2-step UK Garage, complete with skippy breaks and snappy vocal sampling.

In the decade since the release of Hospital Records’ ‘Future Sound Of Russia’ LP, Bop and Subwave have produced an impressive array of tracks across Hospital Records, Med School, Liquicity, Shogun Audio, Metalheadz and Microfunk, cementing their reputations for going beyond the boundaries of D+B. Esteemed Russian D+B producers Bop x Subwave are back with the second release under their new collaborative project. The four-track ‘Dream On’ EP is a perfect encapsulation of the pair’s style, seamlessly infusing their sounds to create a unique and refreshing project whereby the duo have once again tested the boundaries of D+B moving into the realms of garage and lo-fi jungle.

Kicking off the EP is ‘Higher Dimension’, a synthwave-infused D+B number with a dark twist. Dreamlike vocals drenched in reverb combined with nostalgic synths and an unforgiving bassline set the listener up for what’s to come. The minimal yet soulful ‘Escape From U’ follows, bringing crisp percussion and melancholic vibes to this sublime stepper.

‘Lo-Fi Romance’ leads the way for the second half of the EP. Airy pads and bare-bone breaks lay the foundations for this simple yet sophisticated liquid roller. Switching up the vibe yet staying true to the distinct Bop x Subwave sound, ‘Haze’ rounds off the EP, taking things down to 130BPM territory. A clear homage to the sounds of the UK underground with garage-influenced drums and a hard hitting sub.

After the success of their debut EP ‘Love & Other Drugs’ including a number 1 track in the Beatport Garage chart, appraisal from key electronic music publications such as DJ Mag and Resident Advisor as well as radio support across BBC Radio 1, Rinse FM and Reprezent, it’s set to be a huge year for the duo project.
