The Young Punx – Mashpop & Punkstep: DnB Mixes

The Young Punx team up with Croatian drum & bass powerhouse Kodin to reimagine tracks from their cult 2009 album Mashpop & Punkstep through a dark DnB lens.

At the centre of the EP is “Like Dat” (feat. Count Bass D) — a tough, neuro-tinged rework that blends heavyweight low-end with occasional Blade Runner-style synth atmospheres. Bronx-born indie-rap legend Count Bass D delivers surreal, coded verses — retelling The Young Punx’s tour stories in a hybrid of Tennessee/Atlanta slang and clipped London RP — over Kodin’s cinematic production.

Also included is Kodin’s reinvention of the ragga-tinged “Juice and Gin”, the remix that first caught The Young Punx’s ear and sparked the whole collaboration. His distinctive sound design and uncompromising grooves push the track into deeper, futuristic territory.

To complete the package, Phonat’s Punkstep Mix of “Ready For The Fight” is included — a rock-meets-drum & bass collision driven by distorted guitars, perfectly reflecting the culture-clash ethos of the original album. Previously released, it’s included here to round out the DnB collection.

Visuals for the release come from Dutch artist Han Hoogerbrugge, whose typographical chaos of lyrics set against pixelated sea creatures and cityscapes offers a uniquely abstract response to the music.

Launched at the end of 2015, Kent based Profound Beats is still very much in its infancy as an imprint, but this five track EP from Bou featuring his regular collaborator Dutta shows they're ready to play with the big kids. This EP is massive! 'Ganster Whistle' will have you pulling all types of bass faces while bussin' the one foot skank, trust us it's not optional the low end is just magnetic. 'Landscape' is one of those tracks that really stands out in a set, its distinguishing feature is it's high pitch, modern jump up melodic pattern, but the metalic, gritting grind between the bars brings something fresh. "New Beginnings' is our favourite track of the release, it's all about that pulsating low end. 'For The Moment' is stripped back dancefloor, cowbells, train horns and a dirty sub. 'Midnight' builds with a head bobbing, clapping and tapping drum pattern, but the glory of this track comes with melody, it's fun and party ready.

We could all do with a superhero once in a while, right? Thankfully the one provided by Kartoons doesn’t exactly fly across skyscrapers, rescuing people from the clutches of evil however, if you really wanted Nicky to, he would no doubt don a cape and skintight suit the next time he graces the decks!

The original ‘Superhero’ by The House Crew was released way back in 1994 and what a time to be alive that was. Jungle music was literally exploding all over the UK, we had a great choice of events to attend and nobody really knew exactly what they were doing - perfect. Times have changed no doubt but the spirit of jungle music lives on, especially with the likes of Monk, Papa G, Profile, Sub Killaz and Alcemist who have all provided their unique take on the original classic.

Monk & Papa G’s 2020 relick will make you smile from ear to ear. Their huge attention to detail gives them ultimate bragging rights in respect of remixing a classic, bringing it up to date yet retaining everything that was brilliant about the original. The Monk ‘95 Unreleased VIP’ is certainly something special and it’s been a long time coming for some die hard junglists. No beard stroking required here.

Profile and Sub Killaz of course provide a 2020 jump up relick with plenty of oomph and a frenzy of midrange bass. Alcemist reloads the clock, slipping into 2019 territory, speeding up the BPM and sticking it all in a big mixing pot.

The lyrics “You can be my knight. Who's watching over me” are certainly timeless. What a way to end the year for Kartoons.
