I was honored to be invited to close out the New York edition of @Satorimusica's new Maktub concept. This was one of my favorite performances in a while, however following an incredible live act with visuals tightly synced to their every note and displayed a giant LED wall is no small task :)

This recording starts off following the same energy level at the height of the night then slowly transitions into a slightly more relaxed and experimental vibe as the sun starts to come up.

I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I did performing it.

This weeks special is a ride between deep house and deep tech, and, if you listen closely, you'll notice some Detroit and Chicago house influence. Yulia Niko's Mezcalita is an awesome groover that gets you started the right way on this monday!

Quickly falling under the spell of House music, Yulia learned to DJ at the age of 15 and was soon a resident in Sochi, Russia, close to where she grew up. After getting her Law degree, Yulia relocated first to Greece, then New York, where she wrote two albums worth of material which ended up getting her signed to a number of labels. Her break out track, ‘Zurich’, was snapped up by Get Physical to widespread acclaim. No wonder she received a coveted ‘One to Watch’ from Mixmag the same year.

In Berlin, where she currently lives, Yulia refocused her attention and wrote another brace of tracks, two of which were picked up by Damien Lazarus’ Rebellion imprint. Now signed to some impressive top-tier labels, Yulia’s studio craft was being recognised by an ever-growing army of high profile admirers including Dennis Ferrer, Jamie Jones, Lee Foss, and many others who were playing and charting her music.

Besides her incredible DJ and studio skills, Yulia has impressive business acumen. Setting up her first record label, TochnoTechno back in 2016 showed the tougher end of her musical palette and helped her understand the logistics of the business. With Libe Vibe, she is delivering her second label project, supporting young artists. It explores the relationship between the vibe and energy, a sonic experimentation that will bring new and old sounds together collectively. 

Her latest release, Manifesto EP, is out today on Watergate Records. It comes with three original releases and remixes by YokoO and/or Francesco Mami. Our favorite is the original of "Passion", a percussion-heavy groover with hypnotic vocals. It's our lucky day, Yulia used it in her sensational Mezcalita!

🗯🗯 Wie hat Corona dein Künstlerleben verändert? 🗯🗯

Ganz klar, keine Gigs – vor allem am Anfang. Da erschienen auf einmal solche Formate, wo dir andere beim Auflegen zuschauen. Nicht wirklich mein Ding. Es hat zwar Spaß gemacht sich die etwas kreativeren Varianten auszudenken aber das Gefühl wie beim Spielen im Club oder auf Festivals blieb da aus. Auch die Arbeit im Kollektiv schlief ein bisschen ein. Im Sommer hatte ich kurz das Gefühl alles sei vorbei oder wir könnten uns irgendwie damit arrangieren. Es gab immerhin Gigs auf Festivals, leider unbezahlt. Corona hat mein Leben nun insofern verändert, dass ich mir händeringend einen Job in einem anderen Bereich suchen muss. Mein Studium hab ich zum Glück während der Krise hinter mich gebracht. Die Jobsuche hierin hätte ich wahrscheinlich ohne Corona ziemlich entspannt angehen lassen und nicht das erstbeste genommen.

🗯🗯 Wo hast du diesen Mix aufgenommen? Wie ging es dir dabei? 🗯🗯

Den Mix habe ich im Zimmer meines Mitbewohners an etwas gewöhnungsbedürftigen „Deanon“ Playern aufgenommen. Gepaart mit ein paar technischen Unsicherheiten war es natürlich ein schönes Gefühl „meine Mucke“ über eine halbwegs anständige Anlage zu hören.  Ich habe mir die ganze Zeit die Frage gestellt, ob der Mix mehr „clubstyle“ werden soll oder, ob es doch etwas chilligeres und mehr für zuhause werden sollte. Es ist eine bunte Mischung geworden. Fragen über Fragen also, die vielleicht diese fragwürdige Zeit etwas wiederspiegeln.

🗯🗯 Was wünscht du dir für die Zeit nach oder mit Corona? 🗯🗯

Ich wünsche mir für jetzt und die Zeit nach Corona, dass alle meine geliebten Orte der Subkultur und auch die der Kultur allgemein bestehen bleiben und die Krise überstehen. Ich wünsche mir, dass DJs, die sich eventuell nicht so einfach nach einem anderen Job umschauen können, irgendwie über die Runden kommen. Ich hoffe, dass aus der Krise Positives gezogen wird und niemand den Mut oder die Hoffnung in das was wir tun verliert. Ich habe mich nämlich auch schon sagen hören „Ich glaub das mit dem Auflegen ist jetzt wohl durch“. Es wird vielleicht erstmal etwas anders aber ich sehe auch, dass einige Menschen fantastisches auf die Beine stellen und so werden wir das Ganze auch überstehen. Lasst rollen diggis. ❤
