Change happens
All the time
But when we don't know what comes next
It makes it very uncomfortable
Think about all the changes
You've gone through the last 2 years
Maybe your entire business disappeared
Maybe a person you really enjoyed working with
Unexpectedly announced their retirement
Maybe you finally got used to 
Working from home
And now your company wants 
You to go back to the office

Change usually isn't
A pleasant experience
But if there was something
You had easy access to
That could make those unexpected
Changes easier to handle
For both yourself and your organization
Would you want to know about it?

Let's get curious about change

A few years ago
I had an experience
That made me curious
About change

I was clicking along in my life
When one day
I had a conversation
That shattered
The entire world as I knew it
It caused everything in my life
To change
Personally and professionally

During that time I was
Also starting to get interested
In change management
As a practice
And at my first
ACMP conference
I started asking questions
What happens to us
When we change?
How do we change?
What makes change SO uncomfortable?
Why do some people
Get through changes quicker
Than others?
Why do we resist change?

The research took me on a journey
Through neuroscience
Ethology
Evolutionary and developmental psychology
Thanatology
Change management theory
Coaching and counselling practices
Leadership studies and
All those puzzle pieces
Combined with a hefty dose
Of common sense
Started to form
One amazing picture

In order to survive
Humans need to consume fuel
Eliminate waste
And reproduce
And we have perfectly
Designed processes
For each of those
Functions

If the need to
Adapt to change
Is as much part
Of the human condition
As the need
To eat
Wouldn't it then stand
To reason
That we would have
Evolved a process to manage it?

I think we did.
And I think the pieces
Of the puzzle
Are scattered among
Various disciplines
And hidden away
In academic journals

The human adaptive process
Hasn't yet been clearly recognized
As one of the processes
That we evolved
To support our health
And well-being

Understanding this process
Begins with a basic understanding
Of how your brain works

But just like we don't need
To be nephrologists
To know that if we drink
8 glasses of water
We'll eventually have to pee...
We don't need to be
Neuropsychologists or neurologists
To know how to
Recognize the signals
That our adaptive process
Has been triggered
And know what to do about it
So that we can process the change
Transition
And adapt more easily
Effectively and
Comfortably

As much as we would
Like to think we are different
We can't get around
The fact
That humans are animals
And by overlooking or
Not understanding
The reality of human physiology
We are perhaps creating
Our own costly barriers
Negative consequences
And resistance to change
And missing enormous opportunities
To unlock the potential
Of our employees
Create more change ready
And change resilient cultures
And more engaged humanized environments
Where people actually
WANT
To work

When you're looking at everything it's such a gift
To be able to look at something
And to love it for the sake of it

And nurturing and maintaining that
Is one of the hardest tests of any pro

Much less for anyone to find right?
What is the Beethoven who never found his piano?

So for me, I had intuitive yearning

And when I found these movements
And the little subtle things that no one was pointing at
Telling me what to do
Because I have such a visceral push against
Being told what to do

Everbody's got their stuff
No matter what it is
Everybody has a unique set of variables
That they can put in place
And express their individual identity
In a form of call it greatness
That's something to be remembered
(It's what you look for)

It is easy to say
And I think it is smothering to say
And often there is a culture of saying
That if
If it cannot be proven
It must not be possible
(It must not be possible)
And the big takeaway from that theorem
Is that
There's lots of things that cannot be proven
Though they are correct
(That cannot be proven, though they are correct)

Everything you need to know has already been said
Right?
Is
Desperate people do desperate things
And
Necessity is the mother of all invention
All you need to know
I was desperate
And I needed to break free

Whoa it's The Illusion reporting from somewhere on spaceship Earth.
I'm out for my walk today and this pickup truck passed me, right?
And it triggered a flashback or a connectivity.
I'm not sure, but all of a sudden I felt I was in a psychedelic state.
And I was just thinking about like just being on this Earth thing.
And what it is and the whole deal and then I'm walking down the hill and I'm looking at this here.
I saw connectivity, the realization that there is no separation and it's 100% connected.
And it's radical.
I'm not afraid of it, but it definitely blows me away.
And I get why the ego causes conflict in my mind.
When I get all agitated, I can't be connected to that.
The ego continually separates me from something that isn't separate.
That's where I was like, dude, there is no separation.
And I can feel it, man. I can feel it on a molecular level.
And it's overwhelming. My life depends upon this, my life force.
I'm fully immersed. There is no separation.
If you know what I'm talking about, you know, it all touches itself.
I got to formulate this thought a little bit going up to my garden because I want to illustrate it.
It hit me why they don't want us growing our own food.
We're back here in the garden. We can all grow our own food.
It doesn't matter if you live in the city or not and grow a tomato plant.
It's all about growing something to be connected to what it is.
I planted these seeds. They're living off of the air and what's in the soil and they're growing.
And here you go, you get one of these guys in there. Boom.
That feeds my body, which is this capsule that I'm carrying around my consciousness in
while I'm down here experiencing what it is to be a human being.
You can be down here on spaceship Earth in your space suit and not want to figure anything out.
That's fine. I got no judgment against it. More power to you.
But for those of us who are trying to figure it out, this is probably the most valuable thing I do next to raising children
because there is this connective abundance to it.
And when you're growing your own food, when you grow your own food,
you realize there is an abundance to the experience that we're having here on spaceship Earth.
And we've only been conned that there's a shortage because of the separation.
That's radical, man. That's why they don't want us growing our own food, not because we've advanced beyond it.
They've somehow conned us into thinking that wasting our time is more efficient than actually utilizing our time.
But it takes me about 10 minutes a day to water and do a little bit of weeding.
I'm not fighting the bugs. So the bugs, the bug's not the problem. The bug's a signal.
And it was trying to tell me, dude, you got bugs in your head and they're manifesting in your strawberries.
There's a connectivity. There's an abundance to it because they're just growing out of the ground, man. Add water.
So there is this like relationship that we're having with spaceship Earth.
When I pull a weed, I'm killing a plant, which is a life force.
That's a heavy reality to think about. We're not separate from it.
This spaceship we live in, this experience we're having is abundant. It's not in shortage.
And that's the overwhelming thing. And that's why they don't want us growing our own food, man.
Put a little teeny seed in the ground and bam.
Come back and look at these later and you'll see just vines covering this whole thing just full of fruit.
It's amazing. It's inspiring.
It's the daily struggle, man. We are in a state of abundance and that we've been convinced that we're in a state of lack.
We're not lacking anything. The universe isn't based upon lack. It's based upon abundance.
Spaceship Earth is based upon abundance. It's not based upon lack.
And when I'm here with the plants, it makes sense. When I look at the side of that hill and I get the waves of psychedelia.
I'm like, wow, radical, man. I don't know, man. That's what I'm trippin' on today.

Geoff is about making the abnormal, sound normal. His work uncompromisingly explores the whole range of human emotion. Frequently experimenting with odd grooves, overlapping melodies, and haunting yet optimistic ambience, his work is sure to take you on a unique journey. Influenced by genre pushing artists such as Between the Buried and Me, The Contortionist, and Opeth he has grown his musical toolbox and developed a focussed and genuine artistic expression.

He has been heavily involved in the metal and music scene since his early teens. Hailing from London Ontario he gathered inspiration from the rich underground metal scene. After moving to Toronto, he further developed his musical palette experimenting with other genres and now considers himself simply a lover of good music. 

He has worked as a multi instrumentalist, producer, and composer in multiple progressive metal inspired bands. He believes the ability of metal to cover so much emotional ground is what makes it so special.
