Roku opens the new year by welcoming Leo Perez and Dhany G to the label for their debut EP. Hailing from Cuba and Panama respectively, Leo and Dhany have been frequent studio partners since first collaborating on a single for One Of A Kind in January of 2019. Often finding the creative space between progressive and organic house, the duo quickly compiled an impressive joint resume moving forward, recording key projects for Balkan Connection, Droid9, Transensations and their own Nature Rec imprint. With the second half of 2024 being somewhat of a production hiatus for Leo and Dhany, the duo get 2025 off to a impressive start with their roku debut ‘Onix’, alongside remixes from Ilias Katelanos & Plecta and Da Luka.

Making their label debut with the lone interpretation of ‘Onix’ are Ilias Katelanos & Plecta. Based in Greece, and often paired together as a creative collaborative force, Ilias Katelanos and Plecta have carved out a unique sonic identity in the world of electronic music and organic house, resulting in a string of uniquely crafted records that present a resonant worldly sound. A combined discography highlighted by releases via Melody Of The Soul, Musique de Lune, Rubicunda, Songuara and UV has made them an in demand production duo. Prolific and creative across 2024, Ilias and Plecta now continue their creative partnership as 2025 begins, making their roku debut with a powerful rendition of ‘Onix’. Returning to Meanwhile once more, Alex O’Rion delivers a stunning new double with the twin-tracker “Tunnel / Blackout”.

A regular on GMJ & Matter’s Beatport top 10 Progressive House imprint, Alex O’Rion has provided a score of production credits to Meanwhile. Among them, May 2021’s “Echium” and August 2022’s “Pluvia / Solis / Sericum” stand out as blue-chip original offerings with remixes for Rich Curtis, Jiminy Hop and GMJ & Matter themselves, adding to an increasingly successful portfolio.

The opener, “Tunnel” is a driving rhythmic monster that revels in a rapid-fire percussive groove, booming kick and rolling bassline sequence. Pitching slightly as it evolves, the low-end supplies subtle melodic variation before a chorus of motifs, cadenced stabs and rippling arpeggio creates a sumptuous combination. Flowing freeform melodies emerge in the second movement and into the breakdown providing the perfect pause for breath before a rasping bassline sequence increases in intensity, heralding the return of a pounding third movement where all elements combine to devastating effect.

The deeper, darker techier flavours of “Blackout” manifest themselves with a clicking and popping top-line arrangement while a chorus of effects and cone-melting bass groove supply simmering energy. As the track develops, a huge analogue synth swell appears as it pans the left-right spectrum in stereo unison. A pitched-down vocal effect adds an eerie feel at the breakdown as do the copious amounts of delay and reverb on the liberally sprinkled effects. Before long they are once again joined by the oppressive bassline dominance and intelligently worked melodic phrasing that emerges out of the effect-laden aural collage.

A recurring talent with an endless supply of sonic bombs, the spotlight falls on Alex O’Rion as he emerges from the “Tunnel / Blackout”.
