Speaking Minds return to Aeon with their first EP on the label, after a remarkable appearance as remixers on Dodi Palese’s ‘Black Drop Effects’.

This release starts off with ‘JSB’, a captivating and hypnotic affair enhanced by perfectly crafted delayed synths creeping out of the background. The constant darkness in harmonies and pads takes the listener through a brilliantly thought out progression and leaves them wanting for more after this 9-minute trip ends.

‘Yaoundé’ continues on this melancholic vibe, while bringing forward a more cinematic and even more chilling side from the Italian producers’ music. The main ambient lead develops beautifully, alongside many synth harmonies, and offers a contrast with a pushing drum section. This track is reduced to its essence, with crisp shakers and hi-hats bringing a drive to the intense atmosphere created by numerous harmonic layers.

Closing off this EP, ‘Paradise’ features a drunken melody evolving all through the track; a hook that is celverly completed by a pad halfway through. The arrangement, natural and flowing, makes every element of this trip shine, from the discrete chords in the background to the main synth line.

Butch and Sebastian locked down some studio time together to deliver “Losing Gravity,” which marks another strong collab from the two close comrades. Shivers are in abundance here, as they use deliberately deep textures and somber chords to strike the soles of your shoes.

Out with their third EP of 2016, this August Monkey Safari will release 'Boris,' with remixes by Guy Mantzur and Victor Ruiz, showing the world once again that these guys aren't messing around. 'Boris' is the follow up to their successful mega-EP, 'Bernstein,' released in June, with remixes by John Digweed & Nick Muir and UNER. Their next four-track EP shows the brothers' more serious, grownup side, taking new risks with no vocals, utilizing empty spaces and slower buildups. 'Boris' showcases proper club music: dark and sweaty Tech House with a hypnotic twist.
In the first track of the EP, self-titled "Boris," Sven and Lars go even deeper into their trance trajectory bridging on the darker side of Techno. The second track, "Dodge," takes listeners on a mystical journey playing with deep ambient sounds and a drop that makes your heart speed up. Tel Aviv-based producer Guy Mantzur (Kompakt / Bedrock / Diynamic) drops his hypnotic and seductive remix of "Boris," impossible not to get lost in. Additionally, Brazilian producer Victor Ruiz’s up-beat and complex remix of "Dodge" is not to be missed. ‘Glutes’ is peak-time material without being overly fast or chaotic, the energy instead coming from the transportive arrangement and emotive melodic content. The same can be said for Bäumel’s ‘Surge’ on Kompakt, an anthem in the sets of Tale Of Us last year which led to this release.

The title track rises and falls, surging with wide-sweeping synth notes and a steady rhythm to anchor the waves. An infectious refrain pulls you further in and, right on cue, the kick drum continues to beat the sweet spot. ‘Engage’ is filled with similarly subtle details, uplifting arpeggios and atmospheric reverb. Half-way through the melody bursts into life, shining brightly through the haze and creating one of those moments of release that make the Afterlife sound work so well on a dancefloor.
