Following ‘The Future is the Past’, last year’s widely popular contribution to DGTL’s ‘Various Artists – Volume Two’ compilation, Amsterdam’s Colyn (@colynmusic) now sets his own EP for release on the Amsterdam-based imprint. Entitled ‘Martian’, the diverse 3-tracker is another distinctive step in the exciting young talent’s status as an artist firmly on the ascent. Martian is set to release on September 3 with pre-orders available on August 26.

That ascent has come at a breakneck pace. Even with the hits, international nightlife took from the pandemic, Colyn never missed a beat. His emotive sound is comfortably familiar yet mesmerizingly distinct. Its textures, stutters, and synths occupy a unique space between house and techno. This signature sound has already featured on the likes of Afterlife and Rose Avenue, as well as on several well-received remixes (including for the likes of Joris Voorn). Colyn’s ‘Resolve EP’ on Tale of Us’ Afterlife in 2019 was an instant hit and continues to be a go-to release on the hugely popular imprint.

Martian kicks off with its eponymous track. An Italo-inspired groover, the track features soft, vocoded vocals from Colyn himself. Open for interpretation but concrete enough for all to find meaning, the track ponders one of the deepest of life’s questions: Are we alone?
Then, ‘Pursuit of Happiness’ acts as the natural progression from ‘The Future is the Past‘ – a feel-good anthem and bonafide crowd-pleaser, set to imminently ignite dancefloors the world over. ‘Martian’ concludes with the introspective pandemic produced and inspired ‘Programmed for Empathy’.

The artwork for ‘Martian’ continues DGTL’s commitment to supporting local and independent visual artists. This time, Coloray takes the reigns with his distinctive take on three-dimensional world-building. With ‘Martian’, the multi-disciplinary Dutch artist Coloray and DGTL proudly kick off the first of several unique curations.

We had the honour of touring Roger Martinez in January for a private event and public club show. This is the recording of his public set from a Rooftop in the Melbourne CBD.

Trance inducing DJ-sets, chart topping dance music productions, sound healing meditations, interdisciplinary art-projects and psychedelically infused workshops. Bridging these apparent worlds apart, they all converge in sound artist Roger Martinez.

Roger views a club night or festival as a shamanic ceremony where people gather and have profound experiences through music and dance. During his performances he surrenders himself to creative flow, communicating a unifying experience through the music.

Drawing inspiration from anything between shamanic ceremonies, mountain treks and pop music, his DJ-sets tend to be pan-spectral, transcending genre and style.

A stylistically nomadic producer, his music has found its way onto labels like Lost & Found, Armadillo, Sudbeat, Plattenbank, GEM Records, Tronic.

Why do we tell stories? 

We breathe, we eat, we sleep. We seek connection. These are our basic human needs. 

But there is one more need we all share, and it centres on stories. All across the world, stories are being recounted everywhere, in every imaginable way, at any given time. For telling stories is at the very essence of what it is to be human. 

The universe of stories can be broken down into seven basic plots which underlie all stories ever told. Recognising these patterns is the gateway to unravelling the universal symbolic language from which all storytelling is spun. 

With 'Rebirth', Chapter 24 returns with seven stories in sound collected from artists all across the world to bring these themes to life, the seventh and final iteration in this compilation series.

South African star Bruce Loko (Get Physical, Freerange) opens proceedings with the deep, melodious textures of Cyclone, whipping up the ethereal eye of the storm. Chapter 24 regular Kieran Apter is next, making good the tension with the impactful 6.10.21 Break. Such is the power of this track that it propels the listener into new sonic dimensions.

Kostakis (Get Physical, Katermukke) offers up Xerxes, which is equally big and conjures up the dusty, mysterious and impenetrable planes of the desert. Meanwhile, Acumen returns to the imprint in collaboration with Pontias. Shower for Hours is a pumping, techy number bound to get the dancefloor bouncing before opening out into a euphoric peak.

The compilation closes out with a high quality trio. Label favourite KatrinKa delivers the typically deep groove of ABAF. DJ Zombi (Beat Boutique) takes things further down into a dreamy and blissful space with Steph. The honour of closing out the final Seven Stories befalls Hope Recordings and Soundgarden legend Nick Warren and the talented Nicolas Rada, who revisit Anton Dhouran's Valhalla Rising. Their Edition is fittingly deep, transportative and dramatic. 

They say that there are only seven basic plots but a thousand different stories. 

And so, as the storyteller utters that age old, magical phrase "Once upon a time...", let yourself be carried away one final time...

Seven Stories: Rebirth {SS007}

PREMIERE: Anton Dhouran - Valhalla Rising (Nick Warren & Nicolas Rada Edition) [Chapter 24]

'The 9th release of Infinite Depth will be in the name of the Italian producer Recode. Three well shaped originals accompanied by two great remixes by respectively the Italian Alberth and Dutch newcomers Convolute.

'Irreale' is the title track of the EP. It's a track with a catchy melody and interesting arrangement of percussion. It brings a lot of groove with in between the groove lingering breaks, creating impressive moments.

In the remix by Alberth, he replaced the groove for a more atmospheric techno approach. With his typical deep and immersive sound, he managed to create a very suitable remix, which is perfectly in line with the original track.

The third track is called 'Artefatto'. In this track Recode took his groove to an even higher level by letting the percussion and bass communicate in a unique way.

'Sospiro' could be seen as the most optimistic track of the EP. A beautiful melody, which floats fluently through the track, is connected with a matching lead, which are shaping a dazzling ambiance together. 

The remix of 'Sospiro' by Convolute could be seen as driving version of the original track. They took the main idea of the original and surrounded it by some more progressive sounds. To keep the emotion they managed to add a touching synth, which gives the EP a powerful end.'

This includes remastered versions of classic tracks like Dish Out Bum’s “Gak Trak” Chiapet’s “Tick Tock,” 2 Smokin’ Barrels’ “Basses Loaded,” and Timeline’s “Clockwork Orange,” as well as modern cuts like Victor Ruiz’s “Rollercoaster,” ANNA’s “Momentum,” Nicole Moudaber’s seminal remix of Alcatraz’s “Give Me Luv”, and Loco & Jam and Frankyeffe’s “Splitting Minds.” To spice things up, we’ve included three brand new remixes from Moonwalk, label regular Olivier Giacomotto, and Dubspeeka. 'Astral Rebel' goes back to the chunky, groovy and lush vibe that has been a little difficult to find in some late dancefloors. Deep but fun, solid but not hard. Standouts are the lovely warm bassline and integrated pad work - classically beautiful, with tasty muted analogue blurts on the side. This is a very accessible track and has enough energy (supplied by bass and addictive higher percussion) to get feet on the floor.
