Ending the year in style, Meanwhile celebrates its 39th release with label head-honchos, GMJ & Matter showcasing a 3-track epic in “EXT 135 / Elemental / Time to Space”.

Artists who have risen rapidly to secure permanent seats at underground dance’s top table, GMJ & Matter excel within the DJ and production arenas. Responsible for some of the most intelligent and atmospheric progressive house music the industry has seen and an ironclad provenance behind them, the Melbourne based duo have been leading lights in their hometown and beyond for more than 15 years. Hugely respected artists in their own rights with over 500 individual production credits each, a century has come within their collaborative partnership.

As such, original gems have included several original EPs for Proton Music, with additional work finding its way onto the likes of Anjunadeep, onedotsixtwo and Balance Music. However, it is on Meanwhile where the Australian duo have joined forces with such style and grace. From 2020’s “Lost on Origin”, “Gauntlet” and “Eldarin” to 2021’s “The Path /Perfect Storm”, plus remixes for Alex O’Rion, Rich Curtis and Roger Martinez, GMJ & Matter have been at the vanguard of modern progressive house as they now return for another stellar outing.

“EXT 135” is a fizzing powerhouse of hi-hat percussion and white-noise fills as immaculately filtered melodies emerge from the rhythmic melange alongside a chorus of expertly woven pads. A gentle vocal cut adds a melancholy vibe as the track pauses for breath at the breakdown before blossoming once more into the second half with ease and trademark aplomb.

Continuing the rich rhythmic foundation of its predecessor, “Elemental” develops a stunning rolling cadence and swung percussion that provides the perfect platform for a warm blanket of textured pads and pulsating melodies to emerge. Redolent in delays and effects, a reverse-reverb vocal chant creates tension and variation while a simple motif holds fort in the background, helping rhythm and melody gel across the track’s duration.

The final track sees “Time To Space” propelled forwards with cavernous bass groove, ticking percussion and laser beam effects. Evolving elegantly, a sustained pad creates an Underworld-esque backdrop from which a chunky synth motif filters into sonic range before being juxtaposed by a glassy counterpoint phrase. Building through the breakdown, the tracks hits its stride once more in the latter stages with an expansive soundstage and metronomic groove.

Illustrating unrivalled talent and craftsmanship, GMJ & Matter once again conquer the progressive house landscape with “EXT135 / Elemental / Time To Space”.

Andrea Cassino, with such celebrated releases as “Divine”, “Losing Part of Me” and “Asante”, has been at the forefront of the progressive house scene for almost 15 years. Remixes for Kamilo Sanclemente & Dabeat, Rudy, Michael A and GMJ have also been notable highlights in the Italian-born producer’s star-studded portfolio, as he now returns to remix Savvas. Characterised by an effortless bouncing bass groove and immaculately syncopated percussion, the Andrea Cassino interpretation of “Wonder” retains some of the core melodic themes while turning it into a rolling, club-friendly gem. Sweeping string passages and the haunting vocal prevalent in the original make their presence heard, particularly at the atmospheric and evocative breakdown before the mesmerising groove takes hold once more.

Odagled (@odagled_music) Announces New EP, *The Shadows of the Past*, Set for Release January 17, 2025

Miami-based label **Magician On Duty** proudly presents *The Shadows of the Past*, the highly anticipated first release of 2025 from the enigmatic producer Odagled. This marks Odagled’s return to the spotlight following his last solo release in 2023. Taking a step back from external pressures and label demands, Odagled embraced a simpler, introspective approach to this project, channeling his energy into pure artistic expression.  

A Journey Through Shadows  
The EP opens with “Walking Alone,” a poignant track that sets the tone for Odagled’s reflective journey. Initiated in September 2024, the piece captures the solitude and silent nights spent searching for truth. Delicate piano melodies intertwine with rhythmic patterns, leading into haunting vocal layers. The Roland 101’s resonant tones and textured percussion elevate the track’s emotional weight, blending dark atmospheres with an undercurrent of resilience.  

A Collaborative Connection  
The second track, a standout collaboration with rising artist Aiyu, is a testament to creative serendipity. Their connection began in February 2024 during Marc Marzenit’s **Aulart Music Production Course**, where Odagled discovered Aiyu’s unique sound. Together, they crafted a deeply immersive piece, with Aiyu’s evocative vocals adding depth and character to the composition. The synergy between the two artists shines through, creating a memorable and emotive experience.  

Confronting the Past  
The title track, “The Shadows of the Past,” delves into the themes of closure and emotional growth. Written in October 2024, the song explores the fear of letting go and the transformative power of new beginnings. Drawing inspiration from a pivotal period in his personal life, Odagled infuses Pop and Indie rhythms into the track, supported by dynamic basslines and synth-driven crescendos. Sweet yet dark vocal textures complete the piece, leaving listeners suspended in a space of introspection and catharsis.  

A Nostalgic Ride  
Closing the EP is “Wheels & Waves,” a track that embodies freedom and exhilaration. Inspired by Odagled’s surf-skating adventures in the streets of Málaga, the song builds on a deep Moog bassline and the grooves of the Roland 101. The Korg MicroKorg injects a nostalgic 80s flair, perfectly complementing the track’s vibrant energy. Through rich soundscapes and lyrical storytelling, Odagled encapsulates the joy of movement and self-discovery.  

Release Details  
Set to launch on **January 17, 2025**, just days before Odagled’s 29th birthday, *The Shadows of the Past* reflects the artist’s evolution and unwavering commitment to authentic expression. This EP is a milestone in Odagled’s career, capturing his sonic signature while resonating deeply with listeners.

I was shuffling through my music in the car when this track suddenly played, and it completely captivated me. The lyrics, speaking of fighting and the chaos around the world, felt so relevant to what’s happening today. It really touched my heart and made me reflect on the emotions we all go through in these times.
As a big fan of Dolores O’Riordan, the lead vocalist of The Cranberries, her voice always inspires me. I love how raw and emotional her vocals are, and this track was no exception. While this isn’t just a tribute, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for her music and everything she represented.
This remix is my way of expressing those feelings and sharing them with all of you. I’ve made it available as a free download, so you can vibe with it and hopefully feel the same connection I did.

Returning to spearhead Meanwhile’s output as 2025 kicks into gear, the collaborative pairing of GMJ & Matter deliver “Telomeres” alongside a remix from Australian icons Kasey Taylor and Karl Pilbrow for their 2023 hit “EXT 135” to round out the package.

The Melbourne-based duo behind the Meanwhile imprint are widely recognised as responsible for helping shape the modern Progressive House scene. Pivotal in the development of the label’s development both as solo artists and with their combined output, their work on Meanwhile has seen the “Lost on Origin”, “Gauntlet” and “Eldarin” EPs all released over the label’s inaugural year (between April and August 2020), before “The Path / Perfect Storm” followed 6 months later. 18 months elapsed before “Ext 135 / Elemental / Time To Space” appeared at the end of 2022 with “Stellaris / Idritah” following a year later in December 2023.

Now as 2025 finds its feet, GMJ & Matter provide their fans with a seventh original release on their ever-evolving label. The powerful building blocks that shape “Telomeres” evolve easily from its rolling groove foundations and deep sub-bassline sequence. A muted arp comes to the fore in perfect synchronous cadence while the endless delays present in the analogue motif cascade across the stereo spectrum filling the sonic space. A new and dynamic arpeggio appears at the breakdown as its gradual open filter provides the weight and dancefloor gravitas to herald a drop into the third movement. The same sequence makes an appearance in the second half in combination with the other rhythmic and melodic characters, to devastating effect.

Vapour Recordings head honcho, Kasey Taylor needs little introduction to the Meanwhile cognoscenti. A bona fide electronic music legend, the Australian artist has been at the vanguard of the progressive scene since the mid-90s with a double century of credits on such esteemed imprints as Sudbeat Music, Afterglow and John Digweed’s Bedrock and a century on his own Vapour Recordings. New Zealander, Karl Pilbrow moved to his adopted Melbourne home in 2012 before a partnership with Kasey Taylor witnessed a score of production credits including 2020’s “Amber Skies” and 2023’s “Fairlight” on Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat. A trio of original releases on Vapour followed, not least in July 2024’s “Sonorous / Alluvium / Inscape”. Now debuting on Meanwhile, the Kasey Taylor & Karl Pilbrow remix of “EXT 135” contains the deep bassline presence of the original while an unrelenting, rapid-fire groove creates a magical tension. Developing sonic intrigue, the melodic progression of the original’s breakdown is found wedded to the driving rhythm in majestic and spine-tingling fashion. Full of bassline intensity, familiar vocal cuts and melodic fragility are the perfect counterweight to the rhythmic heft.

Classically trained from the age of 9 and picked up his first electronic music record at the age of 13, BMT or better known as Buddha's Mind Trick started off by messing around with the decks at various underground parties throughout Kuala Lumpur. 

Having a plethora of musical influences all throughout his journey helped him shape what is known today among his enthusiasts as the "sound of BMT". BMT orchestrates a musical journey that breaks away from the typical genre classification, paying tribute to his biggest influence - John 00 Fleming. 

Music has no form, nor does it have boundaries as it transcends and evolves through time. While Techno, Trance and Psy go back to the same heritage and origin, the sound of BMT is a bridge that forges these three into a deep driving hypnotic sound, yet able to deliver a sting.
