Finding his groove on Meanwhile with a clutch of impressive productions, Alex O’Rion has been a regular on GMJ and Matter’s best-selling imprint. Reaching a highpoint with May 2020’s “Echium” EP, we now return to O’Rion’s seminal work with remixes from a trio of outstanding artists.

And iconic name within the underground dance industry, Eelko Wijnja has forged a distinctive and innovative sound through his Navar soubriquet. A regular on the likes of Guy J’s Lost & Found, Roger Martinez’s Higher States and Cid Inc.’s Replug, the Dutch star makes his Meanwhile debut with a typically rich and evocative interpretation of “The Chase” that flows gloriously across its near 8-minute journey. Built upon deep kick and rolling arpeggiated synth line, familiar motifs from O’Rion’s original float into sonic range as deeply textured pads and evolving percussive groove wend their way forwards in delicate fashion. An array of sumptuous additional production, courtesy of deep bass and sympathetic new melodies, make their presence felt as the track explodes into the second movement with dancefloor grace. The result is a dynamic interpretation that places Navar at the upper echelons of dance music royalty.

Another familiar name to the Meanwhile cognoscenti, Simos Tagias made an impact via his March 2021 twin-track “Euphoria / Emotion” EP, before September saw a remix of Imran Khan’s “Horizonz”. A veteran of over 400 production credits dating back to a debut for Lynx Records in late 2012, the Greek artist now reworks “Echium” with typical aplomb. Taking the machine-gun hi-hat pattern of the original and a 16th note bass sequence, the meandering melodic themes of O’Rion’s work resonate across a dynamic rhythmic framework. With raw, seething power, Tagias builds intensity that pauses for breath at a haunting breakdown, drenched in reverbs, delays and the stunning motif central to “Echium”, before exploding into the third movement with shimmering effervescence and club-friendly groove.

The final remix sees another Meanwhile favourite enter the fray. An artist who has grown in stature with a slew of releases on the likes of onedotsixtwo, MNL and Proton Music, Sebastian Sellares hit the ground running in April 2021 with his “Dunes at Dawn” EP. This musical triptych showcased the Argentinian’s skill and artistry, while a remix of GMJ’s “Precipice” two months later was another label highlight. Working his production magic on “The Serpent”, Sebastian Sellares has found a way to illuminate the musical phrasing of the original while creating a spotlight that shines on an array of new production material, simultaneously driving the track forward with potent rhythmic force and effortless bassline presence. The result is a searing lead line, rooted in O’Rion’s original, that cuts its way through the second half with acetylene precision, perfectly illustrating Sellares’ sought-after production credentials.

Growing in stature with a trio of towering new remixes from Navar, Simos Tagias and Sebastian Sellares, Alex O’Rion blossoms once again with “Echium”.

Presenting their second release of the year, Antrim’s Or Two Strangers welcomes Sebastian Sellares back to the label for a new EP. The Cordoba resident has been one of the imprints core artists since first appearing in 2019, with five original productions released over the course of a prolific sixteen month stretch. UK behemoth Anjunadeep, Cid Inc’s Replug Records, GMJ and Matter's Meanwhile and US powerhouse Proton Music have also served as landing spots for the Argentine's mesmerizing productions, while progressive music tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren continue to champion his sound. With the year being highlighted by the recently released Replug vehicle ‘Sky Above’, a joint EP project produced alongside fellow countryman Ezequiel Arias, Sebastian now returns to Or Two Strangers with a three track showcase entitled ‘Blizzard’.

EP opener and title selection ‘Blizzard’ finds Sebastian operating at the peak of his creative powers. Fuelled by tough driving beats and layers of hypnotic percussion; it’s Sebastian’s stirring melodies which ultimately shape the piece into a memorable dance floor slam. Colourful cascades emerge leading into the main break, sitting in an emotional headspace and bringing with them trails of balmy atmospherics and effervescent effects, before eventually breaking off into a drop of rebounding rhythms and heartwarming chord changes.

Selection two ‘Elements of Nature’ lands with an equally impressive display of craftsmanship. Sebastian re-affirms his ability to tip a late-night dance floor over the edge, with wobbly grooves and hip-swinging percussion laying the foundation for misty atmospheres and smoky instrumentation. Sitting comfortably in an ethereal yet thought provoking space, thumping beats rise out of a soulful strum-led break into an ever-evolving, free form finale.

The EP’s final selection ‘Hypnotica’ finds Sebastian continuing to diversify his portfolio with a whimsical creation that’s nicely dialled for the sunrise hours. Deeper in design and highly stylized in delivery, its beautifully contoured, funk-fuelled groove sets the course for incandescent melodies and otherworldly harmonics to create a panoramic musical skyline. Often celebrated for his ability to create emotional themes, Sebastian has ventured further with the ‘Blizzard’ collection, into a time of true innovation, traversing a multitude of realms and dimensions within the progressive spectrum, while excelling throughout.

Following the success of August 2021's debut compilation series, and a first volume featuring six original tracks from a stellar cast of international talent, GMJ and Matter now return with a thoroughbred 10-track sequel in "Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 2".

Presenting a global dance party with artists from across the continents, from North and South America to Europe, Australasia and Asia, the second instalment of the "Meanwhile Excursions" series combines an array of established talent with up-and-coming nubreed artists who shine a bright light on the progressive house genre.

Opening with the deep bass groove of "Negev", Colombian star, Golan Zocher, and label head-honcho, GMJ, blend their talent with a delicate ambience that shimmers across its 8-minute time fame with textured pads and flowing soundscape. Mango Alley favourite, Forty Cats continues with the smooth sounds of "Mutualism" as hypnotic rhythms and bass groove propel things forwards, while Andrés Moris creates club-friendly force via "Owen's Dream". Full of emotive chords progressions and twinkling arpeggios, a pulsating bassline makes for a beautifully assured debut.

Redolent in intricate percussive groove and juxtaposed with sumptuous synth arrangement, Tonaco's "Setentrional" is a rhythmic tour de force that only pauses for breath at the beatless breakdown, while Dowden's first of two offerings is a typically impressive offering with "Halstatt" glittering via earworm motif that melds with freeform counterpoint sequence as it evolves through a flurry of white-noise fills and mesmerising presence.

A slow-burning jewel that combines strong rhythmic force with running bassline presence, "Retro" finds Ivan Aliaga showcasing an evolving melodic tapestry that waxes and wanes with ease, while "Misanthropy" is another rhythm-fuelled affair that demonstrates why NOIYSE PROJECT is a name currently on the lips of the progressive cognoscenti with his club-friendly groove and ear for melodic emotion. Moving forwards, the low-slung groove of EMPHI's "The Box" helps to generate a brooding wall of sound that builds in tension-filled phases that rise and fall in ever-evolving synth work and stereo-panned white-noise effects.

The second track from Dowden see him join forces with Meanwhile's other co-founder as the immaculate production credentials of Matter see beautiful piano phrases glitter across "York", fully exposed at the mid-point where reverb-drenched and delay-soaked chords vie for space with a dynamic rhythmic backdrop and ticking hi-hat percussion. Ending as it starts, smooth melodic patterns flow from the fingertips of Gorkiz and Distro in cascading layers of dreamy sonic passages that create a coruscating mosaic of sound atop the blistering rhythmic energy of "Staring at the Sun".

A 10-track trip through the sound of modern progressive house, "Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 2" is a journey to remember.

An international community comes together in the Dutch capital once more after a lengthy period of exile. Amsterdam opens its city gates to a Dance Event of unrivalled togetherness and fraternity. A bright dawn beckons over the horizon with new musical hope touching familiar landmarks. Mango Alley contributes with a seventh edition of its timeless classic bringing joy through a collection of rising and seasoned artists. Twenty-two pieces of sonic creativity reverberate across the night sky in beautiful golden light.

In time, a new beginning creates a snapshot of autumnal colour. Gentle mist rolls across canals that interweave through a vibrant city. An hourglass slowly sifts its grains of sand as a plethora of sights and sounds are generated in synchronicity over days that wait for night to fall. The bustling Leidseplein is filled with chatter by day, while dislocated melodic patterns drift across Rembrantplein as twilight turns to night. Nothing is off limit at the stylish and atmospheric ClubNL and the aural rush created by the Sugar Factory then leads east to tempting rhythms found across the Panama canal.

This week we start of in Rosario, Argentina as we are delighted to bring back the truly talented deep progressive producer, Ape Sapiens. With his first ever release out back in December, 2015, he now quickly is rising in fame and deliver a fine edge of quality productions. For those who yet haven’t been caught by his great blend of melodic work and underground touch on his track, get another chance here. 

His brand new baby, “Levitron” is a brilliant production, filled with all the cleverness needed to build up something that has it all. Warm textures, deep elements and fine melodic layers are built together to this masterpiece. 

To spice things up even more, we have three remixes to complete the package, all of them coming from familiar names on our roster. First out is a welcome return from Buenos Aires bound producer Axel Bray and his great Partenaire moniker. He delivers a superb idea on these original ideas, with it’s melodic and rolling feel. We believe it will shake few dancefloors across the globe and we are thrilled to see him join back. 

Second out on remix duty is one of the more hard working guys on the scene, UK’s very of Alfonso Muchacho who once again returns to us. With his exceptional talent to blend grooves and melodic arrangements, he yet again delivers something rare and special to those following PHW Elements. It has that warm and energetic feel that we so often see from him, and we can’t think he is to disappoint you with his new rework on the label.

Last out is another producer that we always held high, and one that you will see among us on the label for as long as he wants. Dutch maestro Maurice Caron is back again with us and we are as proud as ever for that. He, as always makes something rare and truly beautiful as he puts a dark bassline, keeping the melodic vibe and tension that we so often see from him, and add on a fantastic groove to complete the package. 

To us, a super strong release again, and we are as excited as ever to see the reactions from you out there. We can’t thank these 4 awesome producers for being major players on our label, but for now, keep your heads up and enjoy this brand new PHW Elements release.

It is time to hit back with another favorite and returning artist to us here at PHW Elements as we see the return of none other than high profile producer, Alfonso Muchacho, who heads back to the label. Being a force on the scene for many years, hammering one wicked tune after another, we of course feel delighted when he now wanted to join back on the label once again with a brand new 2 track EP. 

With the opening track “Time Flies”, he send us of on another progressive journey including his trademark blend of grooves of melody driven textures. This is fair to say is another majestic production from this brilliant producer and we let the music take you on that journey from start to finish. 

To complement, we see another driving production, this one with the name “Gasp”. This one has that same hypnotic and energetic style, as we see another string of fine elements blend together to keep the atmosphere and energy. We are delighted to bring on another 2 tracker, and we do hope and believe you will hear a lot more from him through our imprint, not too far from now. But for now, let “Time Flies” and “Gasp” get to you!
