Ending the year on a high having witnessed a plethora of musical highlights, Meanwhile has been a shining beacon for progressive house throughout 2021. Now, Australian, Mike Rish, becomes the latest debutant to showcase his talents on GMJ & Matter’s blossoming imprint with the 3-track “Beyond” EP.

From his home on Australia’s south-eastern coast, Mike Rish has witnessed an impressive rise to notoriety, courtesy of a clutch of high-profile releases on an exclusive set of blue-chip labels. Not wanting to flood the progressive house scene with a swathe of formulaic dance music, the Melbourne resident’s “selective output” is based on a carefully thought-out commitment to “keep people engaged, but also wanting more”. Thus, Rish’s work for the likes of Colorize, Serendeep and Juicebox Music, has seen the Australian carve out a sizeable niche for himself, further enhanced by March 2021’s 12-track “Interlinked” album for UGENIUS Music.

Opening his Meanwhile account with the “Beyond” title track, a chunky beat and cavernous bass groove sit tightly against off-beat hats and snare. Filtering into sonic range, an elegant arpeggio provides glorious melodic interplay as white-noise washes and meandering pads pulse gently across the near 10-minute piece. Full of spine-tingling atmosphere, additional melodic phrasing is introduced at the breakdown before extending into the third movement with ease, combined with a raft of effects and masterful touches.

A bouncing bass groove immediately finds “Mindgame” oozing with hypnotic force and low-end menace. Sat perfectly in between deep kick and ticking hats, a flowing melodic line ripples across proceedings as it rises and falls with filtered dynamism. Twisted vocal cuts and acetylene-edged synth effects pitch with glissando range adding to the aural collage in a track full of dark and mesmerising beauty.

Closing the EP, “Here For You” is characterised by an intricate percussive arrangement that introduces a subtle melodic backdrop. Effects and textured pads span the stereo stage in modulated glory as a pulsating lead melody enters the fray in the second movement. Building steadily before revealing itself fully in the stripped back breakdown, the second half blossoms in commanding fashion with a pulsating confluence of rhythm and melody. The result is a track that illustrates Mike Rish’s unique talent and technique.

A musical triptych full of innovation and sonic narrative, Mike Rish has gone above and “Beyond” with a glittering display of production prowess.

Dunadry, Francisco Basso - Lost in Dagobah (Mauro Augugliaro Remix)

Presenting their second release of the year, Antrim’s Or Two Strangers welcomes Sebastian Sellares back to the label for a new EP. The Cordoba resident has been one of the imprints core artists since first appearing in 2019, with five original productions released over the course of a prolific sixteen month stretch. UK behemoth Anjunadeep, Cid Inc’s Replug Records, GMJ and Matter's Meanwhile and US powerhouse Proton Music have also served as landing spots for the Argentine's mesmerizing productions, while progressive music tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren continue to champion his sound. With the year being highlighted by the recently released Replug vehicle ‘Sky Above’, a joint EP project produced alongside fellow countryman Ezequiel Arias, Sebastian now returns to Or Two Strangers with a three track showcase entitled ‘Blizzard’.

EP opener and title selection ‘Blizzard’ finds Sebastian operating at the peak of his creative powers. Fuelled by tough driving beats and layers of hypnotic percussion; it’s Sebastian’s stirring melodies which ultimately shape the piece into a memorable dance floor slam. Colourful cascades emerge leading into the main break, sitting in an emotional headspace and bringing with them trails of balmy atmospherics and effervescent effects, before eventually breaking off into a drop of rebounding rhythms and heartwarming chord changes.

Selection two ‘Elements of Nature’ lands with an equally impressive display of craftsmanship. Sebastian re-affirms his ability to tip a late-night dance floor over the edge, with wobbly grooves and hip-swinging percussion laying the foundation for misty atmospheres and smoky instrumentation. Sitting comfortably in an ethereal yet thought provoking space, thumping beats rise out of a soulful strum-led break into an ever-evolving, free form finale.

The EP’s final selection ‘Hypnotica’ finds Sebastian continuing to diversify his portfolio with a whimsical creation that’s nicely dialled for the sunrise hours. Deeper in design and highly stylized in delivery, its beautifully contoured, funk-fuelled groove sets the course for incandescent melodies and otherworldly harmonics to create a panoramic musical skyline. Often celebrated for his ability to create emotional themes, Sebastian has ventured further with the ‘Blizzard’ collection, into a time of true innovation, traversing a multitude of realms and dimensions within the progressive spectrum, while excelling throughout.

Following the success of August 2021's debut compilation series, and a first volume featuring six original tracks from a stellar cast of international talent, GMJ and Matter now return with a thoroughbred 10-track sequel in "Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 2".

Presenting a global dance party with artists from across the continents, from North and South America to Europe, Australasia and Asia, the second instalment of the "Meanwhile Excursions" series combines an array of established talent with up-and-coming nubreed artists who shine a bright light on the progressive house genre.

Opening with the deep bass groove of "Negev", Colombian star, Golan Zocher, and label head-honcho, GMJ, blend their talent with a delicate ambience that shimmers across its 8-minute time fame with textured pads and flowing soundscape. Mango Alley favourite, Forty Cats continues with the smooth sounds of "Mutualism" as hypnotic rhythms and bass groove propel things forwards, while Andrés Moris creates club-friendly force via "Owen's Dream". Full of emotive chords progressions and twinkling arpeggios, a pulsating bassline makes for a beautifully assured debut.

Redolent in intricate percussive groove and juxtaposed with sumptuous synth arrangement, Tonaco's "Setentrional" is a rhythmic tour de force that only pauses for breath at the beatless breakdown, while Dowden's first of two offerings is a typically impressive offering with "Halstatt" glittering via earworm motif that melds with freeform counterpoint sequence as it evolves through a flurry of white-noise fills and mesmerising presence.

A slow-burning jewel that combines strong rhythmic force with running bassline presence, "Retro" finds Ivan Aliaga showcasing an evolving melodic tapestry that waxes and wanes with ease, while "Misanthropy" is another rhythm-fuelled affair that demonstrates why NOIYSE PROJECT is a name currently on the lips of the progressive cognoscenti with his club-friendly groove and ear for melodic emotion. Moving forwards, the low-slung groove of EMPHI's "The Box" helps to generate a brooding wall of sound that builds in tension-filled phases that rise and fall in ever-evolving synth work and stereo-panned white-noise effects.

The second track from Dowden see him join forces with Meanwhile's other co-founder as the immaculate production credentials of Matter see beautiful piano phrases glitter across "York", fully exposed at the mid-point where reverb-drenched and delay-soaked chords vie for space with a dynamic rhythmic backdrop and ticking hi-hat percussion. Ending as it starts, smooth melodic patterns flow from the fingertips of Gorkiz and Distro in cascading layers of dreamy sonic passages that create a coruscating mosaic of sound atop the blistering rhythmic energy of "Staring at the Sun".

A 10-track trip through the sound of modern progressive house, "Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 2" is a journey to remember.

Madloch's Sound Avenue imprint opens the month of October with a new EP from DJ Choopie and Golan Zocher. The former, based in Israel lays claim to over two decades of production work and releases via long standing imprints such as Bedrock and Yoshitoshi. Meanwhile, Colombian born, Israel based artist Golan Zocher has enjoyed similar success across his five-year career, landing releases via Nick Warren's The Soundgarden, Beatfreak and Clubsonica Records. Having been occasional studio partners for some time, Choopie and Golan have collaborated on projects for Mango Alley, Sol Selectas and Choopie's Agnosia Black imprint. Also calling Sound Avenue affiliate 3rd Avenue home, the duo now steps up to Sound Avenue for a three track showcase entitled 'Amirim'.

Scott Williams, based on the sunny island of Malta is the next producer to contribute with an amazing original through our PHW Elements roster. Scott that been a close friend to the label for a long time, is one that we always that we always wanted to try and push through our roster, as we think he is one of the best in the business. Having a fantastic 2014 with his music, released through great labels such as Balkan Connection, Clinique Recordings, Mistique Music, ourselves at PHW Elements and a lot more, he of course has made an imprint on the scene with his amazing deep progressive atmospheric productions.

“Times Forgotten” is another hypnotic progressive journey, built through lovely grooves, hypnotic melodic arrangements and spiced up effects. It’s always a pleasure having him around, not only because of his friendly attitude and personality, but for his amazing skills behind the DAW as well.

To spice things up, we also have the pleasure to bring on 3 absolutely stunning remixes to this package, and when a track is great, you are to get  great names on the rework as well.

First out is a return to the label from The Purr Music label boss, Belgrade bound ace Marijan Raskovic, more know to us all with his amazing and creative alias of Jelly For The Babies. With a string of majestic release in pretty much every major label in the business over the years, it is of course a major boost for us each and every time he wants to take part with us on PHW Elements. This time he bring us a beautiful rework on Mr. Williams original ideas, and give his treat to build a huge deep house take. With lovely depth, and smooth and deep feel built through stunning bass lines, he once more proves what a brilliant producer he is. It’s definitely one for the money! 

Label favorite Michael A has built his reputation over the years as well, and he is one of the most sought producers out there in the genre so it’s fair to say we are thrilled to bring him on as well on remix duty this week. Getting great credit for his musical skills, he of course had our full confidence when we asked him to give his treat to “Ties Forgotten”. The outcome is fair to say above expectations, as he delivers another excellent production to his back catalogue. With deep, pounding kicks, lovely melodic arrangements and a superb edge built to his remi, we of course are as happy as ever to have him among us. It won’t take long before he is back, that we promise you. 

Closing of the package with another contribution on our deep division is another welcome return, this time from Mexico’s young and rising talent, David Podhel. For those of you, following the scene, know he is definitely one to watch as he has a lovely way of creating music with depth and drive, the progressive way and you better be ready because this time he delivers in style yet again. With a great depth and drive put on to this remix, David Podhel marks another fantastic production to his growing back catalog and this is to us one of the best so far!

Onedotsixtwo continues to strike whilst the Progressive House iron is well and truly molten hot. Our 27th release bears the fruit of a magical meeting of minds, namely Australian favourite Matter & Sri Lanka's Prince of Prog, Dimuth K, with their Road to Stanton Moor EP.

Matty and Dim deliver two absolute belters for this release. The lead track 'Road to Stanton Moor' is a deep and throbbing builder with tight percussion and eerie effects layers that float in and out of the track, as it rockets towards a momentous breakdown that's guaranteed to send any dancefloor (or, right now, living room) sideways.

The AA side 'Exhale' packs a progressive punch in equal measure, built around beautifully crafted synth lines and infectious melodies with some serious low end rigour for late night moments. Exhale made its debut at Woodstock 69 in 2019, grace a our old friend Hernan Cattaneo, and it's been that elusive 'ID-ID' ever since, popping up in numerous sets from Hernan and Nick Warren since last summer.
