I recently bought a fretless guitar.  I have been experimenting with how to play this guitar in my songs.  I chose a fairly simple riff to highlight the note sliding of the fretless.  This song starts in the key of A Minor.  Then, in the middle, switches to B Minor.  The end is a series of half step moves back to an A Minor.

This is a song I was working on when my niece asked me for a song.  This song was nearly ready.  So I asked her for a name.  She chose Hoodoo Bokuu.

I gave him something I called a simple song. My thinking was that I did not want the music to get in the way of his wonderful guitar. Flying Dream (with Weighty Tree)

This is a song I wrote which I placed on SC a few days ago.  I decided I was unhappy with the melody I had written.  I experimented with several instruments and continued to be unhappy with my melody lines.  So I asked my friend Oorlab if he would try it out.

He then came up with these beautiful violin/fiddle lines.  They were so much better than anything I had done.  So I decided to delete my old version and pout up this much improved version.

Mountain Stream (Featuring Oolab on violin)

This song started out by listening to some of the surf music by my friend Dirk Radloff.  I remembered playing Telstar and other Surf rock songs when I was younger.  These are special songs for a young electric guitarist.

Then Dirk talked about his Epiphone Casino with Bigsby, which he sold.  It's the only guitar, which he has missed so far and he has sold a lot over the years.  I happen to have a Casino I bought from another guitarist (not Dirk).

I decided I wanted to bring these two elements together.  Surf rock guitar and my Epiphone Casino.  I added in a Stratocaster for the lead guitar component.  I considered naming this song "Dirk made me do it".  But, in the end, I named it after Dirk's Surf Rock music:  The Golden Tornadoes (Spelled with an e).

The Tornadoe Effect

As some of you know I bought a new mandolin and I have been enjoying playing it.  This song came out of two recent trends on which I am working:  7/4 timing and mandolin.  I thought it sounded like a song about a dusty (rural) road and it was in 7/4 time.  So I named it 7 Old Dusty Roads.

This song uses acoustic instruments.  So it has a combination of a bluegrass feel (instruments) with a more jazzy time.  This one uses the format of 3 beats then 4 beats for the chord changes.

I hope you enjoy yet another foray into 7/4 timing.

Styrmonix Is such a great partner.  He listens in such intricate detail and provides excellent feedback.  Working with him ensures that a song will be as perfect as it can be. I saw a special on Jaco Pastorious.  What a special bass player was he.  I don't play like him.  Sorry if you wanted to hear some great Jaco style playing.    He had a great influence on this song coming into my being.

Pastorious Influence

I bought a Korean Les Paul style small scale bass a while back.  It cost me $5.  I have now put over $100 worth of work into it.  It still needs a little work but it is playing pretty good.  Here is the first song I made using my new small scale bass.

Small Scale Bass Blues

This is my second attempt at this song.  I was unhappy with the last version I loaded.  I hope this one lasts a little longer.  It is in 7/4 time/  I play Precision Bass, Telecaster (rhythm guitar), and hollow-body electric for accents.

Seven Days Of Autumn

I wanted to write a song using polymeter.  So here it is:  Polly Lolly Ding Dong.  All of the Background is in 4 time and the melody is in 3 time.  The melody will sound a little off.  It goes 2 times through and the second time I make adjustments away from a strict 3/4 time.

I play an Oscar Scmidt acoustic guitar and a Tradition telecaster style guitar on this track.  Everything else are midis that I programmed.

Polly Lolly Ding Dong

I was watching "The Americans" the other night and felt inspired to write this. It is nice to venture into classical music. 95% of the instruments are midis from East-West. I play violin and a saved a few notes that are included in this piece. I have no doubt that the astute musician will notice the amateur nature of the notes I play.

String Quintet With Percussion #1

I have been in the mood for string music.  This is a string quartet with contrabass rather than 2 violins.

String Quartet And Piano

Instrumental.  I play rhythm and melody guitar on my Parker P-38.  I play bass using my Fender (MiM) Fretless Jazz Bass.  I wanted to have some fun playing my guitar in 7/4 time.  So wrote this simple piece and jammed away.  The percussion and keyboards are midis available in Cubase.

Stair Surfing

My friend Dirk Radloff (Heartscore) has influenced me to write some surf rock songs.  I now have 3.  I have put them into a playlist of my Surf rock songs.  I play my Squier Stratocaster (with Lindy Fralin split blads pickups) for both rhythm and lead guitar on this one,  I also use my old fender Precision Bass.  The other instruments are midis.

I had the itch to make another surf guitar song.  Just watching TV with my guitar in my hand and it all came to me.  So here it is.

Ready Set Surf Guitar

As the name implies this song is a tribute to Dick Dale.  Dick Dale plays a Fender Stratocaster.  I chose to play my Speedster Traveler guitar on this song.  I chose this guitar because it is the guitar I used when I wrote the song.

I frequently have my little speedster in my hands while watching TV.  I have written many riffs and songs while doodling on this guitar (while watching TV).

Tribute To Dick Dale

The name for this piece is a quadruple entendre.  It can stand for Randy California the fine guitarist of the band Spirit.  It can stand for a person named Randy in California.  It can stand for the famous donut shop in California.  Finally, it can stand for a person who is horny in California.

I wrote this on bass guitar.  That is, the bass line came to me in the morning when I was waking up.  I started recording it using my precision bass. Randy In California

An instrumental I wrote and make little changes each time through.  This song raises each chord by three half steps.  So the key changes every time the chord changes.  The versus are major chords"  G, A#, then D.  The choruses are minor chords:  E Minor, G Minor, and A# Minor.  The bass line rises during the versus and declines for the choruses.

This song is in 5/4.  This song is about Black Jack Randall from the book/series Outlander.

Black Jack

A song in 5/4.  I play guitar, bass, and viola.  The guitar is a PRS Tremonti LE,  The bass is a MiM Fender Fretless Jazz bass.  The viola is played without effects.  All other sounds are those available in Cubase.  This is in the key of A Minor.  The viola improvisation was made in one take.

Dental Surgery

This song is in 5/4 time.  It feels a little off to me.  Perhaps I hit too many bad notes.  Maybe I overloaded it with instruments.  I play nylon string acoustic guitar (3 tracks), fretless Jazz bass, violin, and viola on this song.  Other sounds are midis available in Cubase.  My DAW is Cubase.  I use Izotope - Ozone for Mastering.  The title comes from the street we lived on in Chesterfield Missouri.
