It is said that in the deepest layers of the subterranea, biology has no place… the complex mechanisms of old evolved relentlessly in ever-spiraling complexity, drawing their energy from the eternal thermal vents of the Worldcore. Mechanical beings woven within a delicate web of survival, spun into life from the sprawling hierarchical mechanism of the planet itself. In the dimly lit depths of one such level, subtle core alignment shifts spark their reaction, vents rerouting the intense heat through systems long untouched, spreading its energy across ancient precipitation tanks. EATBRAIN presents rapidly rising Ukrainian producer NICKBEE with his GEARS EP, also featuring the eerie and alluring vocals of JOANNA SYZE. With these 4 delicately balanced and keenly crafted slices of neurofunk, Nickbee displays a refined sense of structure and minimalism, whilst delivering a powerful vibe for the dance. Half of the EP drips with dystopian spirit, bristling with razor sharp edges softened in NOWHERE TO RUN and WE FIGHT by Syze’s ethereal and alien voice. The Gears EP retains a sense of tight urgency and patient precision throughout, with GEAR’s tilted syncopation providing a light-footed and paranoid pace, while TOGETHER WITH FUTURE delivers a hulking stepper that packs a weighty punch.

And with the inclusion of Kutlo, a Slovakian born producer who’s beginning his antiquated path to success, they’ve demonstrated that yet again there’s longevity within their reign.

Having already released on the likes of NeurofunkGrid, Renegade Hardware and Let it Roll, Kutlo’s addition to Kosen Production’s back catalogue of meticulously chiselled music comes as no surprise. He’s already toured extensively throughout the European scene, from his home country to the Czech Republic, seeding his music to audiences worldwide which is why fans both new and old will be eagerly awaiting his forthcoming EP on Kosen. Between its ticking, atmospheric introduction, to the guttural undertows of ‘Wasp Nest’, Kutlo ensures that the full EP drags you into his heavyweight production standard and leaves you there to drown.

Beginning the collection of records is ‘Memento’. It sets a precedent, one built through snipping hi-hats and a gradual punch line of intimidating beat patterns. Instantly you know the direction which ‘Memento’ is about throw you into, with a flipped bassline and ominous vocal snippets. Then ‘Exotherm’ dives you head first through elevating pitches of synth and crackling percussive undertows. Your aural nerves are pushed through each steppy drum rhythm before once more you’re made acutely aware of the drop that’s about to envelop you. ‘Out of Place’ clicks into gear with a tell-tale, grimy vocal sifting through its intro and a mix which gradually pulls itself together. Each lyrical melody draws you in deeper, before you’re moved into a steppy gait. And finishing the EP is ‘Wasp Nest’, a track which crackles with an LFO bassline, nodding to its namesake, and cuts deeper with every quickening layer of metallics. Kutlo leaves a lasting impression with ‘Wasp Nest’ and it’s the perfect way to wrap up an intimidating furore into the producer’s world. Kosen show that as ever, their selections are gold-standard, epitomised by each intimidating delivery Kutlo serves up.

Trendkill are undeniably on a roll, having rocketed into 2019 with some of their most resounding tracks to date. They’re maintaining this trend with a brand new, double-sided single from Opsen. Led by Prolix, Trendkill has showed their ability to pull through a wide selection of heavyweight production standards from a drum & bass world which is currently at its largest ever population. However, Trendkill are still delivering an array of artists who are just beginning to establish themselves against the scene’s founding producers. But Opsen has already been a recognisable force throughout the wider trenches and his forthcoming single shows this. As one part of the French collaborative Signs project, Opsen demonstrated his creative might, something which the following tracks ‘Redwood Falls’ and ‘Lumberjack’ continues as a solo venture.

Opsen’s ‘Redwood Falls’ is your first insight into what you can expect from this new endeavour and it’s an intimidating one. Brick by sonic brick the track begins to build and before long you’re introduced to a titanic wall of sound, one which breaks suddenly, throwing you down its chaotic first drop. Soon comes the record’s well-honed grooves and it’s the type which sit neatly beneath a punchy composition. Each drum roll claps into the next, with the track developing powerfully as you’re taken through every sixteen bars of noise. Opsen is relentless, something which will is immediately clear on first listen.

The flipside is ‘Lumberjack’, which draws The Clamps into Opsen’s levels. This is a return to Trendkill for The Clamps and it’s one which will see fans excited by its announcement. Both artists demonstrate the same standards of engineering and the track is a merging of two formidable creators. ‘Lumberjack’ pushes the same crushing drive, with shaking subs and moodily distorted LFOs manufacturing its driving motion. Opsen and The Clamps work hand in hand to deliver this next slab of carnage and it’s just one of many releases to come from Trendkill this year. Under the guise of Prolix, the imprint has risen in strength, something which is evident through its stream of releases throughout 2019 and its meteoric rise.
