We’re looking at Liliana Cavani's The Night Porter (1974). Set in 1957 Vienna, Max Aldorfer (Dirk Bogard) is the titular night porter. When a conductor and his wife, Lucia (Charlotte Rampling) check in to Max's motel, he is thrown into a tizzy. He’s been living a quiet life and trying to stay under the radar as he’s a war criminal who has just been confronted with one of his victims... who was also his sex slave.

Professor Gaetana Marrone (author of The Gaze and the Labyrinth: The Cinema of Liliana Cavani) joins us to discuss Cavani's work while Emma Westwood and Kat Ellinger discuss the film.

Written by Itaru Era, the 2001 movie from prolific director Takashi Miike Visitor Q tells the story of a family in disarray. The unemployed father (Ken'ichi Endô) a former newsman who laid off after an unfortunate incident, the mother (Shungiku Uchida) a heroin addict who prostitutes herself for money to get a fix, the son (Jun Mutô) is a victim of bullying who then bullies his own mother, and the daughter (Fujiko) who has left home to become a prostitute as well. When the titular Visitor Q (Kazushi Watanabe) shows up... things change.

Also known as The Streetwalker, The Margin, and sometimes even as Emmanuel 77, La Marge film stars Joe Dallesandro as Sigismond, a loving husband who leaves his wife and child to head to Paris. While there he learns of the sudden, unexpected death of his aforementioned family and spends a few days living in fringes of society, spending most of his time with Diana, played by Sylvia Kristel, a prostitute. The 1976 film is one of several adaptations of André Pieyre de Mandiargues by director Walerian Borowczyk.

La Marge (1976)

After a brief hiatus, The Projection Booth returns with a discussion of John Woo's A Better Tomorrow (1986). The film is seen as a hallmark of the “heroic bloodshed” subgenre of action films, doing for gunplay what a generation of Hong Kong films had done with swords.

The film tells the tale of Ho (Ti Lung), a criminal whose younger brother, Kit (Leslie Cheung), is a police officer. He's betrayed by a fellow gangster (Waise Lee) and sent up the river. When he returns to Hong Kong he wants to stay on the right side of the law which is more difficult than it should be.

The film speaks to loyalty, brotherhood, and put Chow Yun-Fat on the map as a bankable action star.

Cinema Junkie's Beth Accomando and Mike wax fondly about the glory days of HK Cinema, twin brothers, strange sequels, and the true colors of a hero.

The Public Image Is Rotten (Songs From The Heart)

On this special episode of The Projection Booth we fly upon the wings of a demon as we discuss John Boorman’s 1977 film Exorcist II: The Heretic.  

It’s been a few years since we’ve seen Regan MacNeil, the little girl who, on the cusp of womanhood, was possessed by a demon in William Friedkin’s 1973 film.  She’s back... And so’s the demon, Pazuzu…This time the titular exorcist is Father Philip Lamont (Richard Burton) who is investigating what happened to the ill-fated Father Merrin (Max Von Sydow) with the help of Dr. Gene Tuskin (Louise Fletcher) and her hypnosis machine. 

Heretical super-fans Samm Deighan (Diabolique Magazine) and David Kittredge (who's directing a documentary about Exorcist II) join Mike (who did a commentary track on the new Scream Factory blu-ray release) to look at the film, how it came to be, and its fate after release.  Professor Brian Hoyle (The Cinema of John Boorman) and writer Paul Talbot (The Unmaking of Exorcist II) join the fray to try and explain this cinematic oddity.

Exorcist II:  The Heretic (1977)

Co-written by Chuck Vincent and Rick Marx, Roommates (1981) tells the tale of a trio of women trying to make their way in New York City.  The film stars Samantha Fox as Billie, a former prostitute trying to make it in the straight world, Kelly Nichols as Sherry, a model from California with a drug problem, and Veronika Hart, as Joan, an aspiring actress from the Midwest.  

Heather Drain and Ashley West join Mike to discuss this harrowing adult film.  Interviews include writer Rick Marx, cinematographer Larry Revene, and star Jane Hamilton (AKA Veronika Hart).

Roommates (1981)

Scott Reynolds's, Heaven (1998) is a New Zealand film that features crime, sex, and the supernatural. It's the story of our titular Heaven (Daniel Edwards), a transsexual, precognitive stripper who works for a violent member of the underworld, Stanner (Richard Schiff). Moreover, it’s the story of gambler Richard Marling (Martin Donovan), his wife and her lover, a psychiatrist. And, believe it or not, both of those storylines are all tied together into one larger story.

Filmmakers Spencer Parsons and David Kittredge discuss the film with Mike. Actors Daniel Edwards and Jeremy Birchall discuss the making of Heaven while author Chad Taylor talks about the inspiration for his book and revisiting the characters in The Church of John Coltrane.

Heaven (1998)

Released in 1972, Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris is the second of three adaptations of Stanislav Lem's 1961 book of the same name. The film tells the tale of Kris Kelvin (Donatas Banionis) who travels to a station orbiting the planet Solaris, a sentient ocean that seems to be able to read the unconscious thoughts of those on the station and conjure up living embodiments of someone from the astronauts' past, with varying results.

Keith Gordon and Rob St. Mary return to The Projection Booth to discuss the Tarkovsky film, the 1968 TV movie, and the Steven Soderbergh adaptation.
