Up and coming superhot house kid WHITESQUARE had a few releases on Skint, Noir and Ministry Of Sound. Now he joined the Toy Tonics crew for a second time. His last EP LOST had been championed by the likes of Noir, Tim Sweeney, Phil Kieran from Four Tet, DJ Sneak, Tocadisco & more. We guess this new Whitesquare release will make even more DJs happy. It’s a very exciting time for Soul Of Hex right now.  Not only have they hit upon a rich vein of creative inspiration and clearly loving every second of being in the studio making some brilliant music, but the young duo from Tijuana also seem to be inadvertently, or maybe purposefully, shaping a fresh new direction for the Mexican house scene. Taking influences from Detroit via Berlin, and with a knowledge of house, jazz, funk, soul and disco which goes way beyond their years Sebastien Vorhaus and 4004 are in the vanguard of this new generation of house producers and are already making their mark worldwide through releases on CVMR, MCDE, Faces and their own Vicario LTD imprint. 

With close links to, and a residency at The Wherehouse club in Tijuana, a Boiler Room set under their belt, a blistering live set currently being prepped, a remix and support from Larry Heard and further releases scheduled for Quintessentials and Faces, we’re happy to have got in quick while we have the chance and can present to you this lovely release entitled The Muth. 

Opening up we have The Third Eye, defined by a slowly modulating rhodes pad, octave bassline and a dusty drum groove to move you.  Next up is The Muth, another killer bassline (giving us a good idea that Vorhaus is in fact himself a bass player, despite this being a sample - the clue’s in the title!).  Laid back sunshine vibes all round with sporadic rhodes and tropical percussion fills. 

Flipping over we have a remix from hotly tipped Londoner Henry Wu.  Who other than the Peckham-based beatmeister and Jimpster’s favorite new producer to work his magic?  And work it he does!  Vibes for days on this one, adding his own unique sound to the existing parts.  Closing out the EP we have a third original going by the name Sly Batuque.  Once again the boys have got that sample heavy chopped up MPC groove down to a fine artform and it provides another example of why Soul Of Hex are about to cause such a stir.

Title track from Kiko Navarro’s latest album, released in March 2017 on BBE, ‘Everything Happens For A Reason’ is presented here in its original 7 minute incarnation, alongside remixes from Kyodai and Myles Bigelow, plus an edit by Vince Watson.

Moved by Steve Reich’s ‘Music For 18 Musicians’, which he caught live at a concert in SIngapore, then impressed by Kerri Chandler’s ingenious re-imagining of ‘6 Pianos’ (also by Steve Reich), Kiko Navarro was inspired to utilise the piano’s percussive attack as the main rhythmic device in a House track. Calling on his regular collaborator (and piano teacher) Isis “Apache” Montero, Kiko explained his concept and the two gradually built up a compelling, syncopated and potent groove. Taking in tribal, orchestral, latin, afro and tech sounds, ‘Everything Happens For A Reason’ is a moving and poignant piece of House music, topped off with spine-tingling vocals added by Isis “Apache” Montero which call to mind the lyric-free, syllabic singing style made famous by Karl Jenkins’ ’Adiemus’ records.

German duo Kyodai have been making major waves on the global House scene for some years now with releases on Freerange, Compost, Pokerflat and Mad Mats’ high flying Local Talk label. Their remix transitions from tough percussion groove into anthemic piano house workout and back again, dispensing a carefully metered dose of dance-floor magic. Multitalented Canadian musician and DJ Myles Bigelow delivers an uplifting version, adding eastern percussion and vivid synth lines. Vince Watson’s subtle edit introduces a smooth melodic techno atmosphere, extending the arrangement out into a vast sonic expanse. An instrumental version is included in the package for the purists, as is a ‘Beatless’ mix, which makes for an intriguing DJ tool, or simply a powerful sunset soundtrack for those chilled terrace sessions.
