Four years ago National Public Radio signed Mumia Abu-Jamal to do regular commentaries from death row, an agreement NPR quickly rescinded to satisfy conservatives whose support NPR has no hope of ever getting anyway. Six of these political commentaries appear on this new release from Alternative Tentacles.

Abu-Jamal doesn't discuss his actions the night Officer Daniel Faulkner was killed, but he does speak clearly and coherently on prison, police brutality (such as an incident where Philadelphia Police demolished the house of a Mount Airy woman in the name of the drug war) and African-American life. In "Father Hunger" he notes what the lack of black fathers has created in prison: "Those unloved find it virtually impossible to love, and those who were fatherless find themselves alienated and at war with their own communities and families."

The album includes brief testimonials from Allen Ginsburg and Alternative Tentacles founder Jello Biafra, two of the many celebrities who have defended Abu-Jamal...The liner notes feature the now-standard litany of complaints against the cops and prosecution in Abu-Jamal's 1982 trial. One album alone won't convert Abu-Jamal's many detractors, but people on either side of this case should take the opportunity to hear Abu-Jamal in his own words, and in his own voice.
