In 1868, Japan saw a civil war between the shogunate and the imperial army. When defeat seemed imminent for the shogunate, some refused to surrender. A group of shogunate female warriors formed. In this final battle, the group was led by a 21 year old Onna-Bugeisha 女武芸者, a valiant female warrior, Nakano Takeko 中野 竹子.
