I started to spend a lot of time at his house.
We discussed the intense internal conflict 
between personal morals and the obligation to explore.
We were standing before the vast underground lake.
He was visibly stressed and uncomfortable about this conversation.
He knew we were talking about him.

I had introduced him to H. and V.
H. had climbed down into the rumbling throat of a volcano
where he found some interesting psychoactive blends
produced through cross-fertilization.
As they spoke,
I would bake a pizza in the wood-burning oven. 

V. had coasted over the icy Arctic wastes in a dirigible
where he missed a fatal accident by a fraction of a degree.
He also crawled into the caves of southern Europe
where he found ancient paintings and carvings. 

H. was instructed to administer the new experiment
(without knowing he was a part of it himself.)
After a few minutes of pure amazement,
V. embarked on a journey through the entire solar system,
travelling faster than a speeding photon
in gently spinning spirals.

I sat in the corner listening, my foot twitching.
My pent-up energy had to go somewhere. 
Besides, I always had a propensity to be empathetic.

The results were conclusive for both H. and V.
It was all done through micro-agents in the drinking water.
They had never left his house,
there had never been a sound,
they had never gone anywhere.  
And yet I had felt the spirals.

The future was written.
Anything the travelers did would simply cause the future to occur. 
Some of them were interested in having their fortunes read
but foreknowledge made no difference.
There was no original and substantial reality grounding these attempts.

The more they tried to rewrite their lives, 
the more obvious their own signature on reality became.
They called this the Self-Consistency Principle.
Every act they undertook to cover up their trail 
always created another new trail
which once again forced the same future upon them.

This is what they had been taught,
what had been forced into them as truth.
But the inner time lines of their fates
connected the various subjects through invisible points. 
This network of lines could aid in the transition between chambers.
Here they found a possibility.

They became determined to establish a new cosmos.
As each experiment fell apart they were led from one attempt to the next.
A logical paradox had zero mathematical probability of happening.
And yet they tried and tried.
 
As they got older,
they reached a kind of understanding: 
all hypothesis were inherently correct 
and this required them to eventually discover the correct procedure.
They called this procedure dissolution.

They created a glyph which dealt with this specific process.
The moon became the source of attention,
it served as connection and disturbance between consciousness and body.
This was the basis for the invisible door they would attempt to open.
They coded this discovery in the form of a traditional Tarot reading.

They became the Other;
and this Other was itself a new them; 
therefore it likewise became its own Other.
It was a classic case of self-fulfilling prophecy. 

Through their own unique understanding of the cards and their representations,
they became aware that reality itself was structured as a cover-up.
When they finally woke up,
consciousness illuminated their experience as the Sun.

I have no proof that they ever existed.

A gentle dreaming,
so easy any child can take it.
Hands and waves
briefly behold the sensation that runs through your body
smoothing thoughts into liquid.
The material actively held in transitory consciousness
is left behind. 
It can no longer reach you.
A detailed structure and timing must be arranged 
to set the framework.
Once known, it is best forgotten.

Here, very long ago, stood a mysterious temple
devoted to the complex work with freedom.
Here the cingulate cortex
devoted to planning.
Here the occipital cortex
devoted to temporal integration.
And here the intention,
the delicate pulse of a heart in love
the scarlet thread of the secret doctrine.
It courses like electric light
able to perform miracles at will
dimmed only by the outer darkness.

via the most primitive, most unprotected means.
It is the Way of the Process.
Our way. 
We are structures that value the game
and we have to keep it open. 
Not just one game 
but all of them,
all open, wide open.
No law, no code, 
no wall, no safety. 

Everything that you have heard 
from our ongoing process 
amounts to one simple wish:
to walk on fire,
vulnerable, mortal, free.

There is no need for further speculation 
about a new structure being formed around you
about your new existence as a father.
I am too old now
to imagine another evening.
There are unfixable things. 
There will always be unfixable things.

We swim in oceanic background information
with no point of reference, 
no index or guide. 
If there are still heretics out there
they will have to find us
they will have to look.

I imagine what it would have been like

she had traveled by bus back to our hometown 
and spent the morning with me.

that drifted off into the void 
without warning.
And then I imagine
saviors that come to announce
where they drop dead bodies off 
in the darkness.
I’m still in the living room.
I still haven’t slept.
