I'm glad to share with you guys the result of the inevitable inspiration I was surrounded with this last Carnival: this new track will be featured in the first of the upcoming Carnival levels of Bernie Needs Love (stages 2-1 to 2-3 or 2-4, probably), and is meant to portray a lighthearted criticism of the festivities. Alongside with the usual chiptune and metal references, I tried to draw elements not only from samba, but also from other smoother Brazilian rhythms — and I truly hope you get the feeling I was going for, which is somewhat in the same vein of "The Velvet Pixel" (another track of the game which is currently also available on Soundcloud).

On the usual technical sidenote, here is what I used: Mulab 5 UL as the DAW (awesome update from 4.x, by the way), 1 Chipsounds track for the drums, and 5 fmdrive tracks for a richer 16bit feel — in contrast to the 8bit instruments that prevail in the soundtrack so far.

The full original Bernie Needs Love soundtrack will be made available for purchase as a digital album when the game reaches version 1.0, but I've been seriously considering adding the WIP soundtrack as a bonus to a slightly more expensive (or less cheap, considering the game is only 2.50 USD during beta) version while we are still adding content.

Bernie Needs Love - True Carnival (RC1)

With the imminence of Bernie Needs Love on Steam, many minor yet important details we've been postponing had to be dealt with before release, including the addition of a bonus stage and the accompanying music. This track, 'Tropcal Entanglement', therefore, will play during bonus gameplay sequences awarded to the player when 10 pills are collected.

Except for the drums, which were manually sequenced on the piano roll, everything was played live - and I believe the latin/bluesy atmosphere was greatly benefited by the organic quality of human performance. 

This time, my trustworthy flute-like MuSynth lead shares the spotlight with a brief yet intense guitar intervention - which is a 1st in this OST. This is something I had considered for previous tracks, but I was afraid it might detract from the chiptune aesthetics we are going for. In this track, however, I feel it fits and actually sounds quite natural along with the Mega-Drive bass and old synth drum laying below.

'Bernie Needs Love' OST - WIP for 2nd bonus level

Now that the basic song structure is set, it's finally rhythm-guitar day for this track - which will be used in the Jawbreaker-based bonus level.
Being so, here is the result of today's guitar session: simple yet effective classic metal riffing, along with thirds in the NWOBHM vein to drive things forward. :)

Well, this took me long enough... Almost 3 months went into making this track for the Jawbreaker-inspired bonus level the next update will introduce to our game Bernie Needs Love.

If you've been following my previous uploads, there's a good chance you'll be surprised by the lack of the chiptunesy quality that permeates most of the game's soundtrack - but I've been taking the bonus levels as an opportunity to play some guitar and, you know, get heavy. ;)

Night Demon
