There is no bigger name in the world of underground house music than Nick Muir. An influential figure since the 1990s and co-founder of the artist duo, Bedrock, with John Digweed, the UK artist has consistently found himself dining at dance music's top table alongside the likes of Nick Warren, Hernan Cattaneo and Sasha. A multi-instrumentalist and session pianist before entering a fledgling dance industry in the early 1990s, Nick's career highlights read like a wish list for any aspiring DJ the world over. From performances in every corner of the globe to festivals and headline slots at leading club nights, Nick's production career has seen a double century of credits on the Bedrock imprint, while a further slew of original and remix credits can be found on the likes of Vapour Recordings, Perspectives Digital and Robert Babicz's Babiczstyle.

A trio of remixes for Proton Music between 2019 and 2021 have seen reworkings of Rick Pier O'Neil, Sebastian Sellares and Eric Lune as we welcome Nick Muir for his debut original release. "All One Word" is a progressive powerhouse that builds in majestic fashion over its 7-minute duration. Adding layers of sound atop a driving beat and hypnotic percussion, smooth pads and cadenced synth stabs play out alongside a meandering analogue motif that develops effortlessly at the beatless breakdown. Hitting its stride once more and developing into a pulsating dancefloor stormer in the final movement, Nick Muir's production credentials are in full evidence.

An iconic pairing who epitomise the modern progressive house scene, GMJ & Matter have found fame and a calendar full of bookings across their Australian homeland and far beyond its borders. Contemporaneously, a production career has seen the Melbourne-based duo join forces on a century of production credits, often for their own Meanwhile imprint as well as the likes of Anjunadeep, Replug and Balance Music. Regulars on Proton Music since 2016 with their "Superposition", "Interscope" and "Osmosis" EPs, plus remixes for Juan Deminicis, Andre Sobota and Pole Folder, the GMJ & Matter remix of "All One Word" revels in the trademark rhythms of the original as a glorious new arpeggio and deep atmospheric pads emerge out of the percussive collage. Paying tribute to the components found in Nick Muir's work, the track rises and falls with dancefloor ease and melodic sensibility before a huge bassline sequence provides a seething, brooding club monster in the final movement.

'A rising star from South America, Ric Niels has lit up the progressive house scene over the past three years. Now joining the Proportion roster, the Argentinean artist releases his “Pirate / Psyncopath” EP.

Renowned for his evocative and emotive sound, Ric Niels has found himself courted by some of the finest modern imprints through his fusing of analogue and digital synths to create a blend of deep, organic and tech sounds. As such, his music has found a welcome home on such celebrated imprints as The Soundgarden, Particles, Plaisirs Sonores and Mango Alley. Almost a half-century of production credits can thus be found for the latter in both solo and collaborative guises with Ric seeing work with Dowden, The Wash and Mango himself grace the Russian imprint.

Supported by an elite DJ cast list that includes the likes of Nick Warren, Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo and Henry Saiz, it is not difficult to see why the Argentinean from Chaco Province has continued to be such a sought-after producer within the progressive house fraternity. Opening his Proportion account with a scintillating musical diptych, “Pirate” immediately grabs listener attention with its pounding beat and deep bassline groove. Light percussive touches pervade the dense sonic layers as trademark melodic prowess reveals itself through a dynamic dancefloor backdrop. Cascading synth lines and delay-infused arpeggios ripple across the soundstage, coming to the fore at a striped back breakdown before a growling bass riff heralds an exciting final movement full of potency and drive.

Pulling the listener in with a shaker-fuelled percussive line and chest-thumping kick, “Psyncopath” provides the hallmark rhythmic poise for which Ric Niels has become renowned for. Full of sinister menace, a creeping bassline pattern and textured pads swim dizzyingly across the stereo spectrum in the early stages before a filtered arpeggio wends its way onto the main stage with poise and verve. Infused with white-noise at a mid-point chock full of sonic layers and captivating melodic characters, the final movement drives effortlessly forward as the hypnotic groove once again finds it mark.

As the Meanwhile label family goes from strength to strength with a regular supply of high-quality material from around the globe, Meanwhile Horizons turns to co-founder GMJ and a full-label debut with his “Bayen / Metai / Valinor”.

A familiar figure within the progressive house fraternity, GMJ stature continues to rise. The creator of almost 500 production credits, the Australian star is a regular contributor to some of the finest modern imprints that include Balance Music, Replug and Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music. As a regular on the flagship Meanwhile label with a host of solo and collaborative material, the Australian’s full debut outing on Meanwhile Horizons is another powerful reminder of the GMJ attention to detail and immaculate fusion of rhythmic intricacy and melodic flair.

Opening with the velvety smooth “Bayen”, a deep resonant kick drum keeps the melodic actors in check as a gently swaying percussive backdrop provides subtle dancefloor energy. Building through the early movements, smooth motifs make their presence felt before a huge sub-bassline note and intelligent progression creates spine-tingling emotion. Arpeggios, pads and counterpoint phrasing then combine at the breakdown before dropping back into the rhythmic melange.

“Metai” continues the easy melodic narrative as an influx of harmonious characters blend together with dulcet tones. Replete in long reverb tails, epic delays and evocative atmosphere, fizzing white-noise washes create additional texture as delicate melodic sequences flow across a sonic landscape held together by the aural glue of a mesmerising grooved bassline. The result is a timeless track that passes its 7-minutes in seemingly seconds.

The final offering finds “Valinor” delivering a broken beat masterclass that coruscates over a head-shaking rhythmic path. A swathe of new layers are added in imperceptible fashion as the sublime groove catches hold under delicate synth phrasing and rich pads. Waxing and waning in understated fashion, the introduction of another wonderful bassline phrase adds texture and aural depth.

Showcasing yet another facet of a versatile production portfolio, GMJ shines jewel-like through the sonic triptych of “Bayen / Metai / Valinor”.
