A prolific and equally talented artist, Rick Pier O'Neil has won a host of plaudits for his "One Side of the Underground" series. Now reaching its fifth outing, the "Vol, 5" opener sees Rick join forces with Anthony G, a successful producer on the likes of Balkan Connection, Stellar Fountain and RPO Records. Driven by a pounding beat and subterranean bass groove, a heads-shaking percussion lays the foundation for a rich collage of melodies to flow across "Kohana" in powerful fashion. Ethereal vocal touches add further to the entwined motifs as a cascading arpeggio increases intrigue. Another collaboration sees Modern Agenda, Dopamine White and RPO Records contributor, Echo Daft, create a multi-faceted offering in "Vatsalya". A rolling rhythm creates the perfect vehicle for a swathe of motifs to swirl across the stereo spectrum and a central melody is repeated to potent effect. Once again vocal treatments add to the overall feel as the track waxes and wanes with ease in a progressive house powerhouse. The third original track sees O'Neil in solo guise as a club-friendly bassline soon finds a layer of melodies sat elegantly atop to create a glorious soundscape that revels in textured pads and gated white noise patterns. A deep and mesmerising offering, "Chaliponga" is full of the trademark flair that is so prominent in the French star's music.

Trilucid need little introduction to the underground dance faithful. A UK duo with a host of impressive production credits to their name for Perspectives Digital, Colorize and Songbird, their work for Proton Music has seen 2019s "Glint" and 2020's "Astral" (the latter with Phil Martyn) light up the label with a vibrant and memorable sound. Remixing Petar Dundov's "Salvation" in late 2020, Trilucid now return with a typically impressive remix of "The Sinner". Wrapped in a chunky rhythmic groove, familiar refrains from O'Neil, Michael & Levan and Stiven Rivic's original shine through amidst a chorus of new production work from the Trilucid studio. As the track evolves a stunning new motif is revealed that commands the listener's attention as it perfectly syncopates to the new percussive backdrop. Building in intensity, the breakdown and third movement showcase Trilucid's abundant skill and craftsmanship.

Fresh from a successful remix of Juan Deminicis and the forthcoming "Run Only Run" EP on Particles, Gux Jimenez has carved out quite a name for himself from his Cartagena home. A veteran of over 200 production credits since a 2008 debut, music signed to UV, Clubsonica Records and Balkan Connection have kept the Argentinean firmly in the limelight. Now debuting on Proton Music, the Gux Jimenez remix of "Imperial" takes the track on a driving voyage of meandering melodic flow, capturing themes that resonate with the original in new and exciting directions as soaring phrases coruscate within a rich sonic tapestry. The powerful groove adds a dynamic edge to proceedings and a rippling arpeggio in the second half adds class and maturity to an impressive debut.

Nikko.Z's Dopamine White welcomes Abity to the label for their debut EP entitled Memories'. Hailing from Argentina, Jóse Duque and Bruno Signorelli make up the Abity production team. The Rosario natives have been collaborating and creating their brand of progressive music for over a decade. Laying claim to a discography of close to 150 credits, the Nick Warren favourites have showcased their music via Antrim's Or Two Strangers, 3rd Avenue, Soundteller Records and Stellar Fountain. Now in a year which has seen just one new project, Abity debuts on Dopamine White with a three-track artist showcase.

Abity's penchant for progressive minded music continues to evolve with the lead track Memories'. Backed by punchy beats and a warm, rolling groove comes pulsating rhythms and finely tuned percussion. Its powerful drive is blanketed with soulful vocal pads and clusters of timely effects. Quirky arps and harmonic overlays add depth and colour across the first act, resulting in an otherworldly feel. The second of two breaks proves impactful, gracefully melting down to impassioned vocal phrasing and hopeful atmospherics, before a rush of beats ushers in a driving finale.

The journey continues with the deep, chugging vibes of Deceptive River''. Immediately captivating, it's timeless chord stabs and subterranean groove make for a stellar beginning. Firing percussion and effervescent effects play off the muscular low end, making for an irresistible vibe leading into the break. Short but impactful, the interlude builds tension through rising modulation, before smoothly transitioning into a finale of esoteric chord changes and glowing overlays.

The release concludes in fine fashion with the nostalgic qualities of Injection'. Beginning with perfectly sculpted beats and a wide array of electronic meanderings, it's a compelling creation from the start. Warm atmospheres and bubbly arps gently encase the framework, as charged rhythms drive momentum forward. Airy atmospherics trail across the backdrop, building emotion with each successive loop, before a timely break resets the groove for a stirring finale. It rounds out what is an inspired collection of music from Abity, who continue to be one of Argentina's most beloved progressive house acts.

PREMIERE: Abity - Memories [Dopamine White]

Joining forces for the first time, DJ Paul, NAHS and Andre Moret present their ‘Spiritual Balance’ EP via Deersky’s Soundteller Records. All outstanding producers in their own right, it’s somewhat of a rare event for a collaboration like this to come to fruition. In this Argentina meets Brazil project all three artists manage to get the best out of one another, beginning with the title selection ‘Spiritual Balance’.

Setting the journey in motion is a tight, rippling groove and neatly produced percussion. Billowing stabs and alien-like effects sweep across the framework as momentum builds, eventually giving way to additional percussive layers and a futuristic vocal narrative. Modulation peaks at timely moments during the first act, setting up impactful transitions and powerful drops, before the vocal phrasing expands during the main break and sets up a wonky drop and groovy finale.

The companion piece ‘Experience’ follows suit with an equally enticing journey. Once again the production is exceptional, with a well shaped groove and robust rhythms working beautifully together. A cross cultural vocal then descends over the framework in choir-like fashion, as layers of percussion push momentum forward. A solemn break sits at the heart of the track, gently bringing the mood down into one of deep introspection. Otherworldly in design, it’s this thought provoking interlude which adds further charm to an already reflective journey, and ultimately closes the release out on a strong note. It’s always exciting to see three of your favourite artists come together on a project, and although sometimes it doesn’t always meet expectations, on this occasion it certainly does. Highly recommended.
